Burbank, Calif. (March 30, 2012) – Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group (WBHEG) and The Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. Family Trust have entered into an agreement whereby Warner will license the North American distribution rights to some 70 titles from the Samuel Goldwyn Films library. The deal was announced today by Jeff Baker, Warner Executive Vice President and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog, and Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., founder of The Samuel Goldwyn Company, and the son of pioneer motion picture mogul Samuel Goldwyn.
The agreement represents nearly every film produced by the legendary producer, Samuel Goldwyn, including some that have never before been available to the home entertainment market. Titles could be released on Blu-ray Disc™, DVD, electronic sell-through and VOD as early as the 4th quarter of this year. Specific announcements to follow.
“The acquisition of the stellar Samuel Goldwyn library reaffirms WBHEG’s commitment to the classics and ownership through physical and digital distribution to consumers,” said Baker. “Our library, already boasting such crown jewels as The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane and Casablanca to name just a few, will be strengthened even further with Goldwyn’s fine titles from American film history.”
The Samuel Goldwyn Films library includes nearly four decades of classic films, all personally produced by Goldwyn for his Samuel Goldwyn Productions between 1925 and 1955. Top titles to be added to the WBHEG library, already the largest in the world, include The Best Years of Our Lives, 1946’s Oscar®-winning Best Picture, which increases the number of WBHEG library’s Best Picture Oscar® winners to 22, the most of any other single studio. Other highlights include William Wyler’s 1939 drama, Wuthering Heights starring Laurence Olivier, Merle Oberon and David Niven, The Pride of the Yankees starring Gary Cooper, Guys and Dolls starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine, and Hans Christian Andersen starring Danny Kaye. Additionally, eight Gary Cooper films are included in the Goldwyn library, which also boasts films from some of the most acclaimed directors in screen history including Wyler, Howard Hawks and John Ford.
According to Sam Goldwyn Jr., “I could not be more pleased to have our library in such esteemed and capable hands. Warner Bros. has had an exceptional reputation going back to the days of my father. The idea that our treasured titles such as Wuthering Heights, The Best Years of Our Lives, and dozens of others will be handled with such passion and care could not make me happier.”
The agreement, covering U.S. and Canada, includes all home video, electronic sell-through, and transactional VOD rights.

Home Media Magazine added the following information:
“Generally speaking, we’re not interested in acquisitions,” said Jeff Baker, EVP and GM of theatrical catalog for Warner.
The studio made an exception March 30, when it licensed 74 titles from The Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. Family Trust, covering nearly every film from producer Samuel Goldwyn, including some that have never seen a home entertainment release....
Baker said many of the Goldwyn films would be included in future TCM Turner Classic Movie DVD collections, which feature four films in one package, grouped by actor or theme. Others, “where practical in terms of restoration,” Baker said, can expect a Blu-ray Disc release. And others, particularly the 14 silent films included in the deal, would likely see a release via Warner Archive, the studio’s DVD manufacture-on-demand service, Baker said.

I wonder what they will use for the soundtrack (music and effects) of the Ronald Colman/Vilma Banky film TWO LOVERS.
Many years ago (in the seventies) I acquired a complete set of Vitaphone discs for this film.
I checked with the UCLA archives and they didn't have a copy of this material, then I wrote to the AFI---who checked with, as I recall, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, who owned the negative, and they didn't have a copy of the soundtrack either.
At that time, the AFI reported back to me that they had checked with all of their affiliated archives around the world and none of them had the soundtrack material, and they felt that what I held was the only known surviving soundtrack material!
So, I eventually called the Samuel Goldwyn Company to offer them the use of the material to restore the soundtrack to the film and after the call went through several channels, I got to someone who said "No, they weren't interested."
So I said, "Do you mean to tell me that if you don't have the soundtrack for this film, and if I'm offering to you, free-of-charge, material which should accompany your film but which you don't have in your own vaults, you are STILL not interested???"
He said, "Yes. We're only looking to preserve THE WINNING OF BARBARA WORTH, with Gary Cooper, from the silent period."
I wonder what they're using for a soundtrack for THIS release.

The Goldwyn Library on Warner Video is great news.
Many of the HBO and MGM Home Entertainment masters were not the best, and, hopefully, they'll all undergo sparkling new (and modern) transfers from Warners.
The color films PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE, WONDER MAN, SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, and HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN were all spectacularly gorgeous in their original imbibition Technicolor theatrical presentations, but never looked quite as good on video. Maybe we'll have new Blu-ray masterings of these, too.
And other black-and-white films like WUTHERING HEIGHTS, THE HURRICANE, THE ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, THE WESTERNER, THE THREE LITTLE FOXIES  , ENCHANTMENT, THE BISHOP'S WIFE, and several others would be greatly enhanced with new transfers and, particularly, Blu-ray releases.
This might also be our chance to get complete sets of the early thirties Eddie Cantor musicals on contemporary DVD / Blu-ray.
The MGM Video release of GUYS AND DOLLS is atrocious, with quite a lot of picture information cropped off---even in their high-end Anniversary edition. Warners can do A LOT better.
I hope the fact that MGM, in their financial desperation, kept grinding out new pressings and packagings of some of the more important films in this package hasn't ruined the market for a few good new editions from Warners. The Goldwyn Library was legendary for its quality and needs to be treated and sold that way again.

A posting that I read on another chat board stated that a number of the Goldwyn silent films are considered lost or exist only in 16mm prints. While these titles may be licensed to Warners, suitable elements for release may never be available.

Is anything happening with this? Goldwyn's "Porgy and Bess" is a beautiful film. Like many of you, I would give anything to finally have a restored blu ray version of it. I bought a terrible bootleg a few years ago and, in spite of its visual deficiencies, I was blown away by the brilliance of the music and production.
