As probably everybody knows by now, MV and the team of La-La-Land have the intriguing habit of hiding highly interesting stuff on some of their releases.
Usually these "hidden" tracks can be found at the end of the last track (after a short sequence of silence).

While the number of such releases keeps growing and growing, I thought it would be a good idea to collect all information about this stuff in one place. (Lest someone misses one of these precious tracks ... wink)

Perhaps it could even be added to the La-La-Land wiki page as well? Jason? smile

==================================================

In any case here's the list of easter egss that I know of.
(Numbers in Bracksts give the Cd-number in a multi-CD set, track names are partly made up by myself and not official)

Easter eggs

  • #1042 - Lost in Space (40th Anniversary Edition) [2] - Dr. Smith & the Robot in conversation

  • #1072 - Blazing Saddles - RANDOLPH SCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wink

  • #1091 - Airplane! - Tribal Drums (African News Report)

  • #1103 - Trick 'r Treat - Final Statement of the Main Theme

  • #1128 - Dragonslayer - percussion / music used during a display of Galen's wizarding abilities.
(Can anybody confirm / deny this?)

  • #1140 - Batman [2] - "Beautiful Dreamer" [(amazing) Vocal Version]

  • #1176 - Star Trek: TNG, Vol. 1 [1] - "Star Trek: TOS - Main Title" [(amazing) Vocal Version]
From the booklet: During the recording of "All Good Things ..." - the final scoring session for the series - McCarthy and the musicians burst into a spontaneous a cappella performance of Alexander Courage's STAR TREK theme. Enterprising listeners will discover it ...

  • #1179 - 1941 [2] - "Wild Bill Kelso in Action" [Movie Dialogue]

  • #1183 - Friday the 13th I-VI [1] - "Guitar Lament"

  • # 1345 - 3:10 To Yuma - "Prickly Pear" [Source Music by orchestrator Bill Boston]

    Additional Information

  • #1091 - Airplane!:

Q: Doesn't Airplane! end with the percussion used for the native news?
A: It sure does, Neil! (by Dan Goldwasser)

  • #1176 - Star Trek: TNG, Vol. 1 [1]:

Q: Who are the people, who are so boldly interpreting Start Trek Main Theme on the Star Trek - TNG Set?
A: The players on the last session of TNG goofing off. (by MV)

  • #1188 - Die Hard [2]:

Q: Why did you choose to make "Roy Rogers meets Beethoven's Ninth" a hidden surprise on the Die Hard Set?
A: It just seemed odd to put it anywhere else. It was a goof that Kamen recorded never meant to be used. (by MV)

  • #1208 - Galaxy Quest:

Q: Galaxy Quest has an easter egg as well: there are some source music variations of the main theme from "Questcon" tacked onto the last track!
A: That's the music that plays when the actors are introduced at the convention. smile (by Neil S. Bulk)

  • #1218 - BATS, Vol. 2 [1]:

Q: I'm pretty sure that MV has said that the Batman Theme piano demo was actually played by Danny Elfman for Tim Burton and Jon Peters as an audition of what the music for Batman would sound like. It wasn't Shirley Walker.
A: It was played by Shirley on behalf of Danny for the producers (by MV)

    "Lost" Easter eggs

  • #1044 - Breakheart Pass:

The best one is of Jerry yelling at the orchestra in Brekheart Pass (I think). Going, "No, no no that's all wrong!"

Sadly we had to take it out.

    MV

  • #1189 - Batman Forever:

One of the musicians at the Batman Forever sessions made a "that's what she said" joke and we thought about including it as an easter egg, but then decided not to.

    Neil

If any of you knowledgeable score-fans should know about more hidden tracks and/or would like to correct my list or just would like to share his/her thoughts on this matter, then please be my guest in this thread! cool

Of course it would be awesome if MV himself could chime in as well and reveal the official track names and/or the real backstory of these tracks. smile
(For obvious reasons there's nothing to be found about them in the respective liner notes. wink)

Disc 4 of B:TAS Vol 2 also has an easter egg: Walker making a speech about her Emmy nomination and wishing the orchestra well as they finish a season of episodes.

As far as I can tell due to the length and sound of the gong compared to the film, it appears to be the gong that overlayed the the track Step by Step.

Never mind - I posted one you've already mentioned, but somehow my weary eyes totally glossed over it. (It was the one on the "The Next Generation" set, which is quite fun). Apologies all around.

...I love those easter eggs... just like you did on the TNG Set! I was laughing for a long time after hearing that one LOL!! The Motion Picture set also had an Easter egg.

I wish he were here to ask him, but could Superman1701 be referring to the Goldsmith/Huxley banter during the blaster beam track?

Any other eggs to be found on ST:TMP?

I guess I won't be buying this one then.

And the Medal of Honor ones were on the original releases as well.

you probbably had to take a Lot out of all releases

When you get the masters you get all recorded takes i presume and not just prepared mix (If you get the tracks for remixing) or am i wrong ?

AIRPLANE! had a pretty good one: the tribal drums for the African news report.

Dang! I was beaten to it.

    No need to worry!
In fact I've used your descritpiton for this very Easter egg. wink

    Excellent story, thanks for sharing!
Pity though you were not allowed to use it. frown

But now come on, MV, and share some stories about those Easter Egss that did make the cut!

  • Who are the people, who are so boldly interpreting Start Trek Main Theme on the Star Trek - TNG Set?
  • What's the story behind the Jarre piano piece on Jennifer 8?
  • Why did you choose to make "Roy Rogers meets Beethoven's Ninth" a hidden surprise on the Die Hard Set?
  • What is the Bonus Track on Dragonslayer actually?

And these are just the first four question that sprang to my mind!
I'm sure there's an interesting story behind each of them, that I'd invite you to share with us obsessed La-La-Land fans ... wink
