I had written...

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Fox) -- As confirmed by zooba, Varese only released half of this lovely score on their Goldsmith at Fox box. Multiple lovely cues are unreleased, including this brief one he put on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iCdZRXGipI&feature=youtu.be

Anna and the King (Fox) -- while 16 minutes were included on the Varese Fox Box, they were from three episodes and that fact combined with some comments in the liner notes make me suspect Goldsmith recorded more for this series, which hopefully will be released complete in the future...my money's on Intrada pairing it with A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

...turns out I was wrong in my decade-old bet about Intrada doing it (I had thought it was their obvious next pairing after The Detective/Von Ryan's Express and Shock Treatment/Fate Is the Hunter)! Instead LLL has picked up the baton with significant expansions of both scores, doubling the number of cues from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and more than doubling the amount of music for Anna and the King. The three scores Goldsmith wrote for the latter are now SO much more fleshed out, and it's especially amazing to finally get the complete "March of the Royal Children" cue at last!

In addition, LLL is premiering Goldsmith's scores for two unsold pilots (which were so obscure when I made my first post that I didn't even list them a decade ago) -- Prudence and the Chief, a western retelling of the Anna and the King story done two years before the Yul Brynner series he scored... and Only in America. Want to hear more about these two scores, and hear sound samples from both them and the previously unreleased music from Anna and Tree Grows? Lend your ears to our Soundtrack Spotlight conversation with Mike Mattesino and Chris Malone!

I'm excited to hear what people think!

Want to just order the new LLL album, which also has Chris Malone-improved versions of Room 222 (with one additional track), Nick Quarry, and A Girl Named Sooner? Here you go:

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Jonah and the Whale -- GNP released this (incomplete) and may still own the rights in perpetuity. Perhaps LLL will tackle this after having done box sets for Lost in Space and Land of the Giants which were in a similar situation.

And lo and behold, the streak of new Goldsmith releases continues...

I can't wait to find out what previously unreleased Goldsmith music is on this set, but besides that, let me be allowed a brief moment of non-Goldsmith excitement and say LEITH STEVENS SCI-FI SCORING! smile Seriously superb, yet fairly underrated/overlooked, composer. And according to IMDb he scored quite a few episodes of this show...

EDIT: Quoting Jeff Bond from the announcement thread...
"There's also a previously unknown main and end title by Jerry Goldsmith that was never used on the show--at least in this form."

WOW!

Stevens scored seven episodes of the series.

And I'm still waiting for Intrada to start another Goldsmith kickstarter campaign - the COMPLETE "In Harm's Way" (including the scoring with the Hammond Solovox keyboard that was used in the climatic battle scenes).

I had written,
“Rudy (Varese / Tri-Star-->Sony Pictures) -- One of Jerry Goldsmith's most beloved 90s scores, I hope this still gets an expansion despite the existence of the complete isolated score on DVD, which of course is in compressed audio rather than lossless. The existing album was a good representation of the score, but it still flows very well in complete form and deserves to all be out there.”

I’ll say no more for now, as I’m recording a Soundtrack Spotlight tomorrow.

I think that's a GREAT idea, especially since it's Douglass Fake's favorite Goldsmith score (tied with Lonely Are the Brave). And you know what? Comparing the cues of the original written score in the Herrick Library with everything Intrada was able to release on their most recent expanded chronological version... I think there's a LOT more music that Goldsmith wrote for this film, which went unused within it. Like, think The Blue Max levels, only nobody was aware because the complete score never came out on album... check out this comparative spreadsheet I made trying to match things up:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mIQR6sOckxw1tz-uMTioR4v2z4bloRLfzB1ExMHQyw4/edit?usp=sharing

Potentially there's much more music that could be premiered on a new recording besides those Hammond Solovox cues... could be a real revelation if Intrada feels like tackling it. I want it almost as much as a complete new recording of The Chairman, now.

That keyboard was actually modified with an echoplex by Paul Beaver, and was the same one used in Goldsmith's scores for "The Satan Bug" and "Our Man Flint". Let's hope if Leigh Phillips tackles the cues with the modified Hammond Solovox, he'd have to get various samples from an working keyboard.

I had written:
Hollow Man (Varese / Sony Pictures) -- It'd be wonderful to get an official CD release of this last Goldsmith/Verhoeven collaboration, though it is one of the earliest examples of a Goldsmith isolated score release, and I believe may be the only example of Goldsmith recording an audio commentary for a home video release.

And lo and behold, after their surprise expansion of Matinee earlier this year it is Intrada Records which rides to the rescue:

What a great time to be a Goldsmith fan!

I had written,
L.A. Confidential (Varese / Warner Bros.) -- The complete score was available on an isolated score track with the film, but I suspect Varese will expand this on CD sooner or later, because it was one of Goldsmith's most prestigious projects of the 90s, netting him an Oscar nomination.

And lo and behold, it'll be available for ordering tomorrow!
https://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=149758&forumID=1&archive=0

Between this, Rudy, and Hollow Man, it's kind of an odd coincidence that the only three late Goldsmith scores which received isolated score tracks on the initial DVD releases of the films have suddenly all received expanded editions within the past two months.

Hi

I don't often post questions here, but do we know if any further volumes are planned in La La's Goldsmith at 20th Century Fox series?

I originally skipped Vols. 1 and 2 due to duplication of titles I already had (insert jokes about The Blue Max here) but picked up with Volume 3 and the more recent volume of TV music (Vol. 5). I've decided that I *really* like the way the set looks on my shelf so I have now added Vols. 1, 2 and 4 (and I'm glad I did), but I have been wondering if any more are in the pipeline?

Thanks

SG

Not officially, and/or not yet, but also not definitely no (yet).

The impression I have is that Vol. 5 was the final one initiated before the Disney takeover of Fox, but in this recent Goldsmith Odyssey Soundtrack Spotlight chat, Mike Mattesino was very adamant that Vol. 5 was not necessarily the end of the series -- give it a listen and I think it'll give you hope:
https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/11302249-odyssey-soundtrack-spotlight-goldsmith-at-20th-vol-v-music-for-television-1968-1975

At the very least, I know Mike *adores* the score to Shock Treatment and I don't think he'd pass up an opportunity to put it back out into the world. Hopefully with that key missing cue (for the first shock treatment, I believe?) included this time, even if in poor sound in a bonus section or something...

This series-specific thread I started might interest you:

I still haven't picked up Vol. 1, though I'm kinda tempted to because I've heard there were a few further sound tweaks done over the previous (surprisingly good-sounding) LLL edition. And my OCD side will probably always be bugged to have the later volumes but not Vol. 1, curse it...

Vol. 2 added one previously-unreleased cue to The Flim-Flam Man... so Goldsmith nut that I am, already a must-have.
Vol. 3 included the premiere of Jerry's great finale cue from Flaming Star, and a significant expansion of SPYS (which I love) so a must-have too.
Vol. 4 didn't look like a must-have at first blush, but the Chris Malone restoration of Ace Eli is NIGHT AND DAY improvement compared with the FSM edition, so it ended up being a huge must-have too. I didn't really like the score much at all in the FSM and pretty much never listened to that album. But in the Malone restoration for LLL I actually enjoy the score as a listening experience now.

The Mummy

The Mummy was actually released by Decca, not Varese.

Well then somebody better get on it! smile

Corrected.

Yavar

However, Decca and Varese Sarabande are both distributed by the same company (U.M.G.).

How is that significant for our purposes? Varese isn't even owned by UMG as far as I understand; only distributed by them. UMG actually owns the Decca/Philips/Deutsche Grammophon/Polydor catalogues...and since the more recent acquisition of EMI, also that catalogue including Capitol/Virgin as well.

Concord Music Group bought Varese but as far as I understand it Concord is also just distributed by UMG.

However, because of the sale, E.M.I. had to dispense of Paralphone, and that label and Roulette are now owned by Warner Music Group.

Yeah, if we're going into OCD territory re. The Blue Max I should probably mention that the presentation of the entire film score plus alternates on one disc (Disc 2) makes it possible to program the "full" version of The Attack (Track 29) in place of the film edit (Track 9) without having to stop and change discs! That was the clincher for me...

At last! THE SIX MONTH JERRY GOLDSMITH CD DROUGHT HAS ENDED! wink

I had written, "City Hall -- I think this score is somewhat underrated and deserves expansion. It's another "modern noir" sounding Goldsmith score, so gets overshadowed by L.A. Confidential, but I actually like it better as an album. Near the bottom of DeputyRiley's Complete Score Breakdown thread I appended an official complete cue list, found later: http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=110759&forumID=1&archive=0"

At last! THE SIX MONTH JERRY GOLDSMITH CD DROUGHT HAS ENDED! wink

Somehow this joke still applies! smile Almost six months after Varese announced City Hall: The Deluxe Edition, Intrada has announced the second Goldsmith expansion of 2023:

I had written way back in 2012, "MacArthur (MCA --> UMG) -- Intrada would be most likely to reissue/expand this. I think the LP was a re-recording, but even if it was the film recording it was not the complete score."

(After I wrote that I learned that the LP was indeed a unique recording.)
