Wait until they find the entire sessions in stereo!

But Basil makes a good point. Why not offer the improved sounding cues disc for free to buyers of the 15 disc box? Or at least sell it individually instead of in a hodge podge collection? Perhaps LLL considered the upgrade more of a completest thing since the original Box is certainly fine, as is. And they didn't want to deal with 4 separate releases of random upgrades and the animated show.

Basil is bummed that these cues are on a $50 set? You should have seen how ecstatic I was when that set contained the end credits to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan sans narration! That was literally my only motivation to getting that set and I happily paid $50 for a track that contained less. Heck, I even paid full price for that track again when it was incorporated into the full score proper on La-La Land's later release of the film's score.

And there's so much other great material on those sets that I keep revisiting. The animated series is super fun and the 'discrete' tracks were something I had no idea I wanted.

This stuff takes work and I'm happy to support La-La Land in making it happen.

You may be glad to pay $50 for one track, but it proves the point that you (initially) were only interested in one "franchise." Not everyone is going to enjoy the rest, or will ever find out because it's not affordable. But it's precisely because they are separate franchises with separate target audiences (which may or may not overlap) that there could have been separate releases, at least for TOS. Maybe a small run of 500 copies to test the demand. Or just [gasp!] downloads. The labels know that collectors get "upgrade-itus" and this was TOS...Or a 2-disc release of TOS with Animated series would have been good. But I imagine LLL had already batted around these ideas and more.
Bottom line, it's more realistic or healthy to see the TOS upgrades as purely optional since the TOS Box is fine.
Unless Basil wants to argue that LLL should have re-pressed the affected Box discs with the improved tracks and mailed them out to Box buyers...I'm with you all the way, Basil, just like Thelma and Louise.big grin

I thought Star Trek was one big all-encompassing franchise...

*shrug*

In regards to your suggestions on test runs? They're just not practical. Digital releases are a whole different ballgame with licensors.

Fans of TOS are not necessarily fans of Next Generation and fans of NG are not necessarily fans of JJ Trek. Same applies with the music. I'm only interesting in TOS, TAS and the TOS film scores. That said I purchased the 4CD set just for TAS music. So if you want something bad enough a fan will buy a set for a quarter of the music I guess.

But that's essentially what they do, pressing smaller batches, and if sales are bad, they don't press the remaining licensed number of copies.
And why make downloads sound like an arduous obstacle when it's done all the time.

And that's what I call a better-worded argument. Star Wars and Star Trek are different franchises. TOS and TNG are not.

That's for sure. LLL doesn't get a say in the download versions, and they don't get any money if I heard right.

All but two of the 15 TOS albums are available for download purchase, if I recall. It's at the iTunes store, Amazon downloads, and apparently you can hear it on Spotify. Similar situation with the Lost in Space box. But it's better with the booklets you get in the actual box sets.

That was three years ago. Now the STAR TREK box is long gone from the iTunes store and Amazon Digital. I wish I knew why. The 12-disc LOST IN SPACE set is still available. Its rights have a different owner, but you'd think the two would be comparable in the marketplace.

The situation for STAR TREK music now is right where it was for decades: you can buy the five vintage GNP albums, and the four Royal Philharmonic albums, but not the LLL set. It's like a classic Disney movie that went back into the studio vault to keep it scarce. But unlike Disney, I don't think there's a marketing strategy going on here, it's more likely CBS doesn't care.

You're right.

"Star Trek" is the franchise. The Original Series, TNG, the Bad Robot movies, etc. are different series within the franchise. Some fans like them all. Others like only some.

So were Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD, and Gomer Pyle all the same franchise? This is critical to our understanding of my "argument," not to mention the universe.

Another crossover universe: The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Petticoat Junction. I can only stand the first one. smile

Don’t forget The Andy Griffith Show itself was a spin-off!

Mayberry RFD was actually just the name of the show after Andy and Opie left town. Everyone else stayed on. It wasn't really a "new" series, just kind of an adjustment. You couldn't call it The Andy Griffith Show if Andy Griffith left. Gomer Pyle is more a simple spin off where the character spun back ON when Gomer was cancelled. Like Enos and The Dukes of Hazzard.

However, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies are related but not part of "The Beverly Hillbillies Franchise." Any more than Laverne and Shirley / Mork & Mindy are part of "the Happy Days Franchise." Or The Jeffersons, Maude and Good Times are part of an "All in the Family Franchise." They're just spin off which can and did exist independently.

Star Trek has a common theme: each show and movie concerns the United Federation of Planets and/or Starfleet personnel. They're all made under the "Star Trek" banner and brand. Same with Star Wars.

I patiently await the next installment from the Hooterville Televised Universe (HTU)... or the 'Hooterverse,' if you will.

(And c'mon: Green Acres was the best!)
