Nearly six years later, this stands for me as one of JW's most beautiful scores, and without a doubt one of his great later period compositions. It is alternately rich and majestic, playful and full of color, but mature and introspective. It is a powerful and yet understated piece of film composing, and it resonates on other levels, philosophical and thoughtful, elegant and wise. With Malice Toward None.

I have the FYC CD and always thought it was funny that it was shorter than the commercially released CD.
Shorter but just like the recent Star Wars films and Tintin (and maybe War Horse?0, it has some different unreleased cues (and sometimes different, more complete versions) as compared with the official album.

Jason's spreadsheets are very helpful for a microscopic view, but I'm curious about the macro-level question - which is the better listening experience? Williams, as he so often does, was obviously trying to produce an album experience entirely separate from the film-in-score.

A shorter version of the album is the way to go. Delete all the feather in the cap shit (and the one that sounds like The Patriot) and baby, you got a stew going.

The OST album, by far. It's very carefully constructed by Williams to be a great listening experience. Importantly, it features 2 entire themes that are barely heard in the film at all; The Elegy Theme (heard in The Dream and Elegy on the OST) and The People's House theme, which only appears in the film in the end credits (and also tracked into The Telegraph Office in place of what Williams intended to be used there, which doesn't use that theme).
In short, the FYC album is a brief album that presents all the edited, tracked, and looped music that conformed to the final picture, while care was put into making the OST a genuinely good album.

Many thanks, folks. As it happens I bought the OST a couple of weeks ago and then I ordered the FYC promo based on this thread. I haven't listened to either one yet - I've been waiting to see the film first - so it'll be interesting to A-B them. I'm sure I'll end up whittling some mutant baby version of both of them in the end.
