So, I FINALLY found a copy of this 1994 John Madden film after all these years (or rather, a place I could stream it online). Took me long enough, but it's only out on a rare VHS, for some reason.

I knew it was a film noir of some sort, but that was about it. Surprised to discover it concerned the persecution of communist symphatizers in 1950's and 1960's San Francisco/Chinatown, in which Matt Dillon plays the FBI agent and Joan Chen the adult daughter of a man Dillon gets convicted (and also the 'femme fatale'). To be fair, the film isn't all that good -- the dialogue, in particular, is very stilted -- but it has some interesting stylistic touches, especially in terms of internal/external camera perception. And the classic noir shots (alleyways, rain, neon, smoke etc.) are very nice. Also extra interesting for me now that I've just been to San Francisco and even lived in Chinatown where much of this was filmed 20 years ago....I think I recognized Ross Alley, in particular, in addition to the obvious Golden Gate of the title.

I've always thought that Goldenthal's score is one of the most beautiful he's ever written -- from the ethereal, Asian stuff to the jazzy sax theme to the gorgeous, Arvo Pärt-ian string harmonies. It really gives the film far more cred than it actually deserves. Actually, I think it's one of the EG albums I play the most often; one that is refreshingly free of bombasticism of any kind. You can hear that it's composed in the wake of ALIEN 3, especially in the string stuff. Pure bliss!

Gorgeous soundtrack album. I agree that it's one of his best.
I saw the movie years ago. I remember some nice moody photography, but that's about it.

I don't have that channel, but thanks for the heads-up anyway. Fortunately, I was able to see the film a few months ago (pr. the original post).

I had no idea this was about the communist persecution, always figured it was a bargain bin romdram; I'm not familiar with the Goldenthal but will check both movie & score out based on that description!

I love this score too. Some beautiful subtle synth writing.

The film is on DVD in Canada, as I imported a copy. I don't remember much from the score though so I'll have to watch it again some time.

A legit DVD? Or a transfer of the VHS copy?

Agreed, this score has long been a favorite of mine, among all of Goldenthal's great music. I still remember buying the CD in the small record shop in my college town, back in Fall 1994. I finally rented the movie on VHS a few years later and felt that Goldenthal's was the best part!

This score is also one I tend to play quite often. It’s a score I warmed up to over time. Some of my favorite tracks include 1,3,4, and 7.

So, there was a bit of chat about this score on here the other week, and I thought, I haven't played that score in years...so...due for a replay.
Imagine my surprise when it was nowhere to be found in the Goldenthal section of my collection!
Did I dream buying this score back in '94?
Was it a tape dub or CDR that I had come to know over the years?
Had I lost it somewhere and it's now lying in some dusty corner of a room, under some loose carpet (VERY unlikely considering how thorough Carole is when it comes to cleaning house)?
Had I lent it to someone and never got it back?
All...Very...Strange.
Anyway, off I went to the internet.
A quick click here, a quick search there, and Presto!
A copy on its way to me in the Post for less than two KFC meals.
Cue today...and said copy arrived at my doorstep...and...(well, it's FSM, so who wants to know what the music sounds like) wink

Enjoy revisiting this wonderful score!

I'm currently on a Goldenthal kick. This is a very beautiful score to listen to, it is refreshingly free of bombasticism which is a nice different kind of score from Goldenthal, he usually tends to write busy music.

Does anyone here know what Goldenthal is saying in the Motel Street Meltdown track on this score by the way? If i'm not mistaken it is his voice.

I think you can hear some influence of Goldenthal's favourite film score, Bernard Herrmann's Cape Fear, in one of the cues, but I forgot to check which one.

another great score. Goldenthal was on a hot streak when he first came onto the Hollywood scoring scene in the early 90s.
