For me Quo Vadis has probably been the most revelatory Rozsa score so far, even including El Cid, I guess because so much of it is inaudible in the film. It is indeed a masterwork, and for the time utterly unique in terms of historical scoring (a period when Victor Young's entertaining but inauthentic Samson & Delilah was more the norm).

I'll be interested in your impression of Sodom & Gomorrah, a quite different work within the same canon, especially if you haven't seen the film.

I know I've seen parts of Sodom over the years on TV, enough not to want to see more. I do have the RCA album and the 2-disc set, but haven't spent too much time on those over the years. So that will feel fresh too.

I listened to some of Tadlow's El Cid yesterday after Quo Vadis, and I have to say it just kind of made me want to go back to QV. I've always loved El Cid, but the nature of the full album is a lot of emphasis on the love theme early on. One of the most notable qualities of the complete QV is the tremendous variety from cue to cue - I skipped a bit through the vocal tracks yesterday, but I'll give them more attention down the road - they too are extremely well done.

Really? I've always felt El Cid was so stuffed with themes that no one predominated, but hey, if that's your genuine reaction. Actually one could perhaps level that criticism at Ben-Hur, where we have two lengthy tracks of the love theme in tandem, but as usual with Rozsa both are so well developed (and orchestrated) that it never grates. Of course, lengthy love scenes were in the nature of these films, and the lovers weren't about to smooch sans music. It must have been quite taxing for lesser composers.

You're not wrong, there are a lot of themes in El Cid. It may be that I'm just too reminded of the film when I listen, and I'm afraid I don't recall fondly the long scenes with Heston and Loren. I don't see any real chemistry between them, just two movie stars going through the paces. Which is kind of funny, because I quite enjoy the scenes between Taylor and Kerr in Quo Vadis, and he's not exactly the world's greatest lover. No accounting for taste. And I'll keep listening to both!

Finally got my arse in gear and bought this. It is a magnificent achievement and pretty much a revelation to me as I know the film quite well but had no idea that so much music was unused, chopped up or moved around. I never used to like the Quo Vadis score anywhere near as much as Ben Hur, El Cid etc, but I may have changed my opinion on the score. It's just as well thought through, just somewhat different in feel.
