Still looking ...

Hi Grimsdyke,

I saw that you re-posted this search. Just out of curiosity (and this is somewhat fun for me, weird as that sounds), I decided to spend a couple of hours traversing the globe for every source, seller, collector, website, paper catalogs NOT on the internet, etc., etc. as a personal challenge. Kind of like a challenging scavenger hunt, if you will.

You are in Germany and have been looking for this soundtrack for around 10 years, so it must be quite difficult to find. It does have an entry on Amazon Germany, but there are no available copies for sale.

I'm presuming that you did the obvious and tried to contact the composer and/or his agent, yes? If you never ask, then you will never know!

Earlier in my CD collecting career, I took a chance and contacted Soren Hyldgaard (in Denmark) and he kindly sent me everything that I asked for! Sadly, he passed away in 2018. I also wrote to composer Gaute Storass in Norway and he sent me the scores I was looking for! What nice persons!

DE INDRINGER ("The Intruder") (Steve Willaert) (2005 Belgian CD) (Strictly Confidential N.V. LEC-018)
(In Germany, the title is "Der Eindringling")

I had a few false alarms, but these possible leads possible leads, which I will leave to yout:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIBRARY IN SINT-NIKLAAS, BELGIUM
They have an available copy, so you might be able to make a copy or perhaps make an offer to buy it.
Many libraries thin their stock of CDs periodically, especially ones which have never been taken out.
Better to find the CD a good home where it is appreciated, than to have it sit collecting dust, so to speak.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AN ANONYMOUS COLLECTOR

I found a collector who listed it as being in his collection. When I looked at what he had in his large collection,
there weren't many soundtracks listed, mostly rock-pop. So this CD might only be of slight interest to him. I have e-mailed him to see if he still has it and if it is one that he would consider selling.

Do you have a price range in US Dollars or in Euros? This is a "yes" or "no" question? No numbers yet.
Some demanding collectors will say "I will pay any price!" and others have a definite maximum, depending on condition.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RISKY DOWNLOAD
I see these all the time when searching. It looks legitimate, too-good-to-be-true. If I click on anything, then my antivirus protector screen pops up and says POTENTIAL MALWARE or some such other ominous-sounding warning. I always back out rather than take the risk of infecting my computer with some godawful virus or worm or ransomware or worse.

AMAZON.DE
Listing present, but no current items for sale

NOW WAIT A MINUTE
With a 15-year-old import and a title in a foreign language...that face on the cover kind of looks familiar....yeah, those thrillers all look familiar. But could I possibly have this one and just don't remember? Well, I had to look in my own collection....just in case. 17 years ago. Now where could that be...? No luck. Must have confused the cover image with Jennifer 8.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, Grimsdyke, that's all for now. MISSION...IN PROGRESS. By the way, I ordered the DVD from Belgium. It looked like an interesting thriller and the music in the trailers was suspenseful.

Oh wow !!! Thank you Ron for your awesome research.
I have to admit that I did not thought about trying to contact the composer directly - will do so asap. Thx !!

However, receiving a CD nowadays from outside of the EU is a pain in the butt and expensive because of import duties. So if it would be coming from abroad it would need to be as "cheap" as possible.
But after now 40+ years of collecting I also have learned to live even if I did not get a CD that I want big grin

I am sure you will like the movie - it has a "sad" twist in the middle - but I won't spoil it ...

In the past 10 days, here is what has developed:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BELGIAN CD SELLERS
I have checked by e-mail with eleven Belgian CD sellers who also sell other Steve Willaert soundtracks to see if they have or can get this CD. I offered a very good price. Five have sent regrets. Six are still pending a response. I even bought a Steve Willaert soundtrack CD titled CHRISTMAS IN PARIS (2008) from one of them. The score samples I found online were nice.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BELGIAN SOUNDTRACK COLLECTORS
I have two advanced, experienced Belgian soundtrack collectors in search of this CD. Time will tell.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONTACTING THE COMPOSER
The composer's official website is currently inactive. But apparently he does have Facebook and LinkedIn accounts. Since my skills with these two contraptions are limited, I'm saving this approach for later on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIBRARY IN SINT-NIKLAAS, BELGIUM
The library has been contacted and does have a copy available. But their capability to do an inter-library loan is restricted to only one-half of the country. In this process, I've learned a bit about Belgian political geography. There are two parts of the country (Flanders + Walloon). Their respective library systems are completely different from and are incompatible with each other. So if you're in one part, you can't order an inter-library loan from the other part. And vice versa. That seems to be the situation with at least one of my two Belgian contacts.
We'll see how the other does.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, I didn't "get lucky" so far, but there are a number of "irons in the fire," so to speak. I'm being patient for now.

I've finally had the chance to see the film. And they say that it's based on a true event. It gets a little distracting when you have to spend such an amount of time staring at the English subtitles. I try to match the subtitles with the spoken words, which sometimes was French and sometimes seemed Flemish. I had to go back a few times and retrace my steps to sort out all the details. You were right about the "sad" reveal past the mid-point. And they rather quickly wound up all the loose ends in the last 10-15 minutes. Whew! Last time I had to deal with subtitles like this was with Audrey Tautou in AMELIE.

Steve Willaert's score is appropriately brooding and somber, supporting the mood of the film quite well. So I'm going to keep on looking for the CD, because it fits the film so well. But it's not the kind of rousing, uplifting film score that makes me want to reach for my baton (yes, I have 3!) and conduct to the music, if you know what I mean.

May the soundtrack fates smile favorably on us both in our quests!

Up to date, 8 of 11 Belgian used CD sellers have replied that they don't have the LE INDRINGER soundtrack. One has gone out of business due to the COVID epidemic. They often add a remark that, even right there in Belgium, this CD is very hard to find.

I wonder how many CDs were pressed. Was this a very low pressing? 500-1000? I'm not able to find any information on the "Strictly Confidential" label.

Still have a few remaining "irons in the fire."

Finding an original copy of DE INDRINGER continues to be very elusive.
But I may be able to get a CDR copy from a collector in Belgium. Details are being worked out.
Another lead through Switzerland is pending, but less likely.
BOY, this has been a real tough nut to crack! Time will tell.

I wonder if this cd is rare because perhaps it was one of those soundtracks not officially released (like Klute) or for some reason quickly withdrawn from sale for legal reasons?

ELECTRONIC SUCCESS!!

While I am still an "originals" collector, I have been blessed by the magnanimous generosity of an anonymous fellow collector with the next best thing: a lossless FLAC audio file and scans of the inserts artwork.

So this Message Board appeal actually worked!

Hey Sean ("Grimsdyke'), since you have been looking unsuccessfully for this score for over ten years, if you are STILL looking for it, send me a private e-mail.

Sincere Thanks to all who chipped in!!

Out of sheer determination, I perused a number of soundtrack sites and made a contact list of every European collector who listed himself as an owner of a CD copy of DE INDRINGER. I also contacted every Belgian used CD sellers who sold soundtracks.

Many sent no reply. Most CD sellers sent polite regrets that they had no copy, but would keep an eye out for one. Most soundtrack collectors liked the score and politely declined to sell their copy. But ONE collector in Belgium opted to sell his mint copy. I looked over the thousands of CDs he listed as being in his collection, and there were very few soundtracks listed. So he did not seem to be a pure soundtrack collector - just a rock-pop collector who happened to have this particular soundtrack. I contacted him and made a good offer and he (with some prodding from his wife) agreed to sell it via PayPal. Payment sent. CD arrived safely. Successful transaction!
