I've often wondered two things when it comes to Bond songs: Are they bad on purpose, or are they just a genre and style unto themselves which one must be in a particular frame of mind in order to enjoy?

What a strange question (statement)! Not all of them can be top class but it must be acknowledged that the majority of them do what they're required to do ... attract the audience to the movie. It's wrong to compare a film song, especially a title song which is written to incorporate either or both the film's title or story-line, with a general pop song.
The fact that many film songs rank highly with the buying public against commercially released pop music is evidence that they're not all bad ... just perhaps, not to your liking.
