I also find Coppolas DRACULA one of the greatest movie of the ninties.Much of its power is rooted in the fantastic performance of Gary Oldman for which he should have received an academy award...just..and here I' m with Yavar as Keanu Reeves should have earned a Razzie wink

Anyways ...such a pitty we will never experience John Williams complete score to the second best Dracula....

Patton IS complete on the FSM twofer with Flight of the Phoenix; it's the latter score by Frank DeVol which isn't complete (but still a very generous program). You make it sound like owning this version would be terrible and I can assure you that's not the case at all.

The Intrada does sound a bit better because it was released so much later, and it does add the unique album recording, which had to be licensed from UMG and included on a separate disc.

Yavar

If all else fails you can buy the Fox dvd, cheap, and listen to the COMPLETE SCORE on the bonus section. No track separation but its only 33 minutes!

I really liked the Coppola Dracula, even though Reeves was horrible (duuuude), and...well, it wasn't really that scary was it? I mean, the cave scene from Badham's Drac might have been the scariest scene out of both movies put together.

Overall, I so much prefer Christopher Lee's Dracula it's ridiculous. I practically worship those Hammer films, and am kind of shocked they haven't come up.

Do folks here really put the Badham above Horror of Dracula?

I have seen the Badham version exactly once, and that was years ago. I remember it was a very handsome production. It had a very "classic" Dracula (complete with cape), one particularly charming and very much a "ladies' man" (more than any Dracula before him). Great John Williams score, of course.

I'd like to re-visit this one day, I see it's on Amazon Prime for streaming. One thing that has kept me from re-watching this: I remember this as a very colorful version of Dracula, with deep reds, much like the old Hammer horror movies, but apparently Badham wanted his verion with faded colors, almost like a black and white movie (more like the old Nosferatu & Bela Lugosi Dracula movies). I remember the colors worked very well in this movie, I wonder how the newer "corrected" version stands up to it, even if it is closer to what Badham had originally in mind.

First Dracula I ever saw... Christopher Lee. Now that one really scared me. Of course, I must have been around nine or so when I saw it. :-)
Those old fashioned Hammer movies were great.

The Badham is a Romantic version...Coppola too. However, the Coppola was more interested in being arty I think; plus it wouldn't surprise me if he had significantly more money to make it.

Horror of Dracula is a HORROR movie through and through. I still have a soft spot for Nosferatu and Lugosi, but that is one Hammer film that will never die. And a couple of the other Dracs in that series are pretty darn good too imo.

If this is successful, I am hopeful for another "double feature": Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed and Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. The former was released...I think mostly intact...but the latter is lost, I think I've read. Either way, new state-of-the-art recordings would be a great addition to any Hammer enthusiast's library.

The Hammer Frankenstein film is one which actually rivals the first imo (I know, hard to beat the iconic Karloff monster). Cushing and Lee were rightful horror masters, and now I'm interested in the score. I'll be happy to watch the film again in the meantime wink
