Today, Real Gone Music releases Alfred Newman's score for THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK -- the LP soundtrack's first legitimate release in over 50 years! I cannot recomend this highly enough to anyone who doesn't already have it -- Newman at his considerable best! http://realgonemusic.enstore.com/item/diary-of-anne-frank-cd

At one point the notes refer to the studio as Warners (an editing error that went unobserved and uncorrected). Warners did, indeed, bid for the rights to the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, but it was Fox, of course, which secured them and made the film. And Newman's Fox orchestra sounds fantastic playing his incredibly moving score.

.....Buy a copy from your favorite retailer today!.....

MY favorite retailer, a used CD/DVD store, had a sealed (but punched) copy of this which I bought YESTERDAY for $7.99!!!

I haven't opened or played it yet, but the trayback certainly has the proper licensing credits to Universal Music Group on the back, so it IS legit.

(I'd still buy a complete version mixed from whatever is left of the studio masters.)

PS.....Frank DeWald is credited on the back, but I can't remember if it is for Liner Notes or as RealGone Sales Rep! smile

Newman's poetic eloquence is sublimely stated in his exquisite score for "The Diary of Anne Frank." I own the original lp, of course, but this first cd release is very exciting and I have ordered multiple copies...not only for myself, but for birthday and Christmas gifts in the year ahead. Few motion picture scores ever possessed the sheer beauty of Newman's incomparable achievement for George Stevens, and for the tragic memory of this heroic young girl.

Superlative Alfred Newman score, I hope the sound is good.

Received my copy of this new REAL GONE issue. The sound is great!. Short, but good notes by Frank DeWald. I was surprised to learn that our very own Lukas Kendall was involved with this first rate re-issue. This release is bittersweet as I would have loved to have had the complete tracks, but as a re-issue of the excellent LP it is highly recommended.

Just received my copy of this CD in the post today...listening to it as I write. Fabulous sound....very crisp and clear...and in STEREO! I have the original LP (Mono) issued in the UK by Rank and also the subsequent Japanese re-issue (Stereo).

My CD came with an extra booklet with a not so easily recognizable signature, in silver ink against the black background! A quick visit to the Real Gone Music website confirmed that I must be one of the first 25 purchasers of the CD release who ordered directly from Real Gone Music, all of whom are promised to receive a separate booklet signed by Diane Baker who played the part of Anne's sister, Margot, in the movie.

I also acquired recently the Blu-Ray release of the movie which includes a short tribute (just under 8 mins) to the music, and their father, by Thomas and David Newman as well as George Stevens Jr. These extras popping up in Blu-Ray releases are a pleasant surprise and offer interesting insights by those involved in the original production, or, as in this case, closely related to those who were directly involved. Keep them coming!

This is indeed a bittersweet release. I have long waited for a full legitimate edition of this stunning score, but I won't be investing in this release. The archival presentation of Class A scores in recent years has been a revelation and has raised all our expectations of what is possible. This release sadly puts us back in the dark ages!

What's the sound quality like on this?

I had this on order but reluctantly canceled it because of the talk I've heard of another label supposedly releasing a more substantial version soon. So the unconfirmed gossip has caused at least one lost sale for a label. And more, judging by other comments above.

Update: I ended up buying this CD and it's very good.

I'll stick with my Tsunami release, which at least has the original Main Title, Entr'acte, and Exit music.

After seeing this release, I fear it's doubtful any other release will appear, especially if Lukas was involved with this.

Oh well.

I'm still on the fence - I want to order this, but worried an expanded version may be announced soon. Need to know!

Maybe so. But I'd rather have the extra cues than pay again for what I have already.

Besides, I'm still hoping an expanded legit release will occur.

Even though that hope currently seems dim....

I wuld like to see the release of whatever music Alfred Newman wrote for David Selznkcks Farewell to Rome. Newman was supposed to be the composer, then because the film was shot in Europe during the trike, Selznick decided to use a non union composer, Mario Mascimbene.

However, some of Newmans original score can be heard on one dvd set -
the doc Fox, the first fifty Years.

The doc shows footage of the fox release farewell.
Accompanyng the dvd, as an extra, is the yearly distributors reel, for Fox of 1957.
There is a longer clip with Selnick speaking about his upcoming film. both of these scenes are scored with Newmans tracks.
Why bring this up here? All of the unused themes later were used in Diary of Anne Frank.
In Farewell, they are pl.ayed in a much bigger way by full orchestra. Anne Frank often is small and sounds like chamber music. Both are good, but I would love to hear all that Newman recorded for this.

Don't agree they both sound good, I prefer the "b__t" because it has extra music. In fact, the only b..... I own.

Please remember the community rules of this board, folks. The possibility that bootleg discussion will discourage sales of a legitimate release is one of the several reasons why it is EXPLICITLY AND TOTALLY PROHIBITED HERE.

I'm disappointed at some of the comments here. Back in the dark ages of the 1990s people would sometimes admit to buying a bootleg because there was no other way to hear the music. "Of course," they said, "I will buy a legitimate issue if it becomes available." Now some are singing a different tune.

DIARY is one of Alfred Newman's great masterpieces. The album is a splendid representation of the music. Relatively little music is missing from the album, and some of that material is readily accessible on the DVD. Everyone who loves Newman should buy this release.

He, of course, is referring to "A Farewell to Arms".
