Why not just offer lossless downloads for those few alt takes? Seems an extreme measure to redo the whole thing. Will they raise the prices on future releases in order to make up the difference?
This redo will not cause any financial change on future product.
We will have a complete and totally new master, as well as revised booklets and tray cards that reflect the changes.
All the old stock has been destroyed.
Very happy about LaLa's action, they deserve enormous plaudits. Will be ordering two copies when available.
I finally received the original pressing of LLL's The Challenge CD. Mixing bowl issue not withstanding, the sound quality of this CD is a substantial improvement on the Prometheus CD. I found that original release to have something a tinny sound and this new remaster has a lot more kick to it. I'm also noticing a number of details I never picked up on in the earlier release. It was definitely worth the re-buy, especially when you include Jeff Bond's great liner notes.
This is the reason why I feel I have to buy the new La La Land release. I like hearing the mixing bowls on the Prometheus CD, but it's audio quality isn't up to current standards and I thought the stereo was kind of closed in. Looking forward to getting this new release next month -- and reading Jeff Bond's liner notes.
I have never heard this score but I will be buying it to support La-La Land since they are taking care of their customers. We customers need to take care of them.
Funny thing about this score. Though it's certainly full of action, it just never quite clicked with me in the past...sort of like Total Recall. But a month or two before LLL said they were re-releasing it, I gave it another listen and now all of a sudden I "get" the score and think it's awesome. Maybe I'll even get into Total Recall one day...sooner or later I seem able to warm up to almost anything Jerry wrote.
I'm really looking forward to getting my copy of The Challenge and hearing the remaster and the film versions of several cues...and reading Jeff Bond's liner notes, of course!
In the case of Planet of the Apes, when the Varese album was done the overlays for the echoplex effects were missing and as far as I know were never found. In some cases in the film (like when the astronauts are running from the falling rock early on) the echoplex parts are inaudible underneath the sound effects anyway. I believe (and Lukas can correct me if I'm wrong about this) they had the same issue on Tora! Tora! Tora!, but by that point the technology existed to reproduce the echoplex effects without the overlays. I think it would be great to revisit Apes, especially since what's in the film now is the Varese version, not the original, and there are few places where that's quite a difference. But having said that, I have no idea if that's something that will ever be done.

Yavar Yavar, I too felt the same about this score. The music just didn't click or connect with me on an emotional level probably owing to the small economy of its asian sounding melody. However after I revisited the album it just caught on. Felt the same on Total Recall but that was a long time ago and it had become a great favourite of mine.
Just got my replacement disc in the mail. Everything sounds great. Mixing bowls loud and clear. Thanks again, Lala.
Very grateful for this as my old Prometheus copy had a weird snapping sound right at 3:15 (The Wrong Sword) that was hugely distracting.
The extra version of the end titles is also a nice touch. I much prefer the subdued flute heard in the film. It's cool to hear Goldsmith's process of eliminating instruments - like the hypersleep scene in Alien minus the french horn.
The remastering on this sounds very good from the samples. Kinda clean and with all the hiss gone. Anyone who the previous label's incarnation can re-confirm the quality upgrade. Planning to get this next...

Yes. I am very familiar with both versions and the new one is significantly better. They removed an annoying "snap" that always bothered me from The Wrong Sword.
I just noticed this thread.... I have the La-La Land Record CD of "THE CHALLENGE". What mixing bowl issue? I think my CD must be already the "reprinted" version. In any case, I did not notice anything peculiar about it?
