Someone please put this on CD!!!!!

I second that!!!! The Jackal is my favorite Burwell score as well.

A very good score by CB and not forgetting the rejected score by Howard Shore which is also excellent. Would be nice to have both released together.

Uhm, as far as I know Howard Shore was never attached to score The Jackal, let alone that he had written and recorded a score for it.

As Burwell mentions in his notes on his website, it was pretty much a forgone conclusion that he would score it based on his previous relationship with director Michael Caton-Jones.

Perhaps you're confused with Ransom?

I can assure you H.Shore recorded a complete score to The Jackal and it was rejected for whatever reason.

Where's your source? And apparently you've heard it, so please share it with us.

But I assure you, Burwell was the composer from the get go.

Michael Caton-Jones and I had made three films together at this point (Doc Hollywood, This Boy's Life, Rob Roy), so it was a forgone conclusion that I would work on "The Jackal", although I didn't care for the script at all. It was a remake of an extraordinary film ("Day of the Jackal"), and what was the point of that?

And if you read the rest of Carter's notes on the project, it's clear he was involved from the start. So once again, no Howard Shore did not work on The Jackal.

Interesting that people have brought up Howard Shore in this thread, if only because it gives me the opportunity to comment that there was a period during the '90s when Burwell could sound very like Shore (and vice-versa of course). I'd never heard THE JACKAL before listening to some of the uploaded suite, but it seems to share a lot in common with a particular run of Shore scores, THE SCORE for example.

It's an inconsequential observation, but it's also fun to try saying "Shore's score for The Score" without sounding like Sean Connery.
