yeah, that Romance beat TMP just tells you how legit the Oscars for scores are, or are not. TMP is a so much more complex, massive, interesting and better work. The Oscars have pretty much been undermined in the last few decades. Even the best picture award is pretty bizarre usually to me. I mean, what was with The Artist for best picture? I mean, that was the best film for the entire year? Well, the only part of this assessment I agree with is that Goldsmith's score is more massive. I don't find it more complex, interesting or a better work than Delerue's. I was just listening to A Little Romance yesterday and am still impressed by the opening cue where he manages to keep the melodic line aloft for nearly two minutes before bringing it to resolution. That to me is incredibly complex scoring, even if it doesn't involve a whole arsenal of instruments pounding away. Delerue makes this kind of difficult composing look so elegant and effortless that it is often overlooked by many listeners. Fortunately, the Academy recognized his abilities.
