I never got the FSM release; the sound quality was just too off-putting. I'll be on board for the re-recording project.

I never got the FSM release; the sound quality was just too off-putting. I'll be on board for the re-recording project. Great news! Definitely the Herrmann score most in need for a re-recording. There is a good Suite on a Silva Screen compilation album called The Essential Bernard Herrmann, but not enough. I remember I bought the old FSM CD and it was the worst sounding album I have ever heard, then or since, to the point it was unlistenable for me. I sold it while back and always hoped for a good sounding modern re-recording.

I'm with you, the music shines through despite the audio imperfections. I quite agree with this too; I've listened to the FSM many times. The BYU release of Steiner's The Flame and the Arrow, lavish as its packaging/presentation is, is probably the poorest-sounding original Golden Age recording that I'm still able to enjoy as a listening experience. (I'm sure it helps that the score/film is a nostalgic childhood favorite of mine.) For me, On Dangerous Ground is much less difficult to enjoy, listening-wise. That said, I would LOVE to hear what the audio wizard Chris Malone could do with it using current sound tools. Even if he could do quite a bit, though, I'm very excited to be getting a new modern stereo recording of such a fantastic score, conducted by Bill Stromberg...for my money the greatest Herrmann conductor who ever lived. If money were no object I'd love it if he newly recorded every single one of Herrmann's works. Yavar

This is one of my favorite Bernard Herrmann scores. I'm in the camp that is willing to listen to the FSM disc because the music is so beautiful and intense, and while the ten minute suite conducted by Paul Bateman is a nice sampler, this is really a score that benefits from being able to be immersed in, and at present the FSM disc is the only way to do that. I will also say that as good as the William Stromberg recording is obviously destined to be, the performances on the original soundtrack recording — those of Virginia Majewski in particular — are really something else. So for me, while the Stromberg recording will most likely become my preferred listening, I can still see myself returning to the FSM disc from time to time. However, a fresh new recording of this score with someone with a track record with Herrmann like Stromberg is something of a dream come true for me. I'm quite excited.

I also love the FSM CD and will continue to play it even after this new recording is out. However, it will be fantastic to hear this music in pristine audio, with the brilliant dynamics it deserves. I will be playing and loving both CDs when the new recording is eventually out. Cheers
