Just was wondering why these two never worked together again after The Abyss?
Silvestri's score was perfect for the film and is one of his best IMO (and also desperately in need of expansion from Varese) and his hard-edged action music style would seem right at home in something like "True Lies" although I respect Cameron for giving the gig to Fiedel.
Have there been any interviews with Cameron discussing Silvestri or likewise? Just curious. Did they see eye to eye?
Hopefully Alan will be part of a retrospective documentary on the forthcoming Blu-ray release.

This remains the best score to date for a James Cameron movie IMO (although if we expanded the definition to include movies on which James Cameron served in any capacity, like "only" writing or executive producing, then it would come second to Rambo: First Blood Part II).

I've never seen or heard The Abyss, but that was a funny little story. What I wouldn't give to attend an Alan Silvestri action score recording session.
By the way, where can I hear the rest of this interview? I'd like to hear more about the Captain America theme that was mentioned at the very end as it faded out.
From the short notes on the CD Cameron seems to have really liked the score "...the score transforms moments and images into experimental magic. I thank him for your tears of joy."
I'd also love a complete version of this score, specially for a complete version of the Sub Battle music! Maybe it could be part of a future Varese Club edition, as I think it is one of the titles Varese has perpetuity.
As possibly the biggest Cameron fan on FSM I can't answer this question at all. I've never read anything negative from Cameron on the score or working with Silvestri which would explain it.
However if you look at his directing projects post-Abyss, realistically only True Lies would have been a fit for Silvestri. T2 was naturally going to see Fieldel return and for Titanic Cameron wanted someone who could do sweeping melodies which isnt Silvestri's forte. And after the Oscar and financial success of the a titanic score it was a shoe-in that Cameron would re-team with Horner for Avatar.

Um... Silvestri can't do big sweeping melodies? I guess that's true if you ignore 1985 onward.

It would be great if the club returns before the end of the year with this and other titles owned in perpetutity by Varese, like Outbreak, Robocop 3....
Wow, promising! It just occurred to me for the first time just how much of a holy grail this would be. Don't remember a lot of music in the film that wasn't released on the original album but I'm sure it would be amazing. Fantastic score, one of my very first! Had the audiocassette way back when and played the hell out of it! I'll keep my fingers crossed...

I thought about it... but they only seem to update their site once or twice a year. Listing a potential title before it's released doesn't exactly happen there every day, or ever. (I'm only talking about the soundtrack category.)

Label heads aside, those around here with secret sources tend to be a little smug and self-aggrandizing about it, so we haven't lost much.
The Abyss is yet another title I used to have many years ago (Cocoon being another) but promised myself I'd re-buy if it ever got the 'label treatment'. Bring it on. Silvestri was on a roll with BTTF, Predator, Roger Rabbit, The Abyss and Predator 2.
