The score to PLANET OF THE APES deserves to be presented on its own. It's a significant, landmark score and it needs no addendum or footnote. I feel it's kind of an insult to the original score that the ESCAPE suite is even there -- and I think Goldsmith would agree. If I were the producer of a new CD, I wouldn't even mention the "lesser APES" in the liner notes!

My sentiments exactly. I find Goldsmith's score a revelation and would much prefer it to be presented on its own and with extra outtakes etc if they were avaiable.

...and although most people seem to prefer the French poster used for the cover, PLANET is such an American film in energy and outlook that I feel Intrada had the right idea with their CD's artwork.

If you are saying that the Intrada cover art is preferrable to the Varese, I agree wholeheartedly. With all due respect to the Varese artist and his skills, I find the cover art very cartoony. And when it comes to movies such as this, where much of the potency comes from the reveals and surprises, it's never a good idea to give so much away on the front cover. I mean, why not stick the Statue Of Liberty on it too, already?
Intrada's cover comes off as being more mysterious and, somehow, more "artistic".

The "Varese artist" in this case is whoever painted the European poster in 1968. That's what this cover is. Though I agree, it's far inferior to the more abstract American poster used as the basis for the Intrada and Project 3 covers. But I'm sure Varese opted to use it to differentiate their CD from the previous releases, and it's hard to argue with them there.

As for your Statue of Liberty question, many DVD releases of the film feature that image as their covers. I suppose they figure the secret's out by now.

Yes, I know that. The DVD covers are also disasters, artistically. Strictly 5-minute photoshop caliber.
The question was rhetorical. big grin

Well, that's never stopped me from being a know-it-all before, so why should it now?

Heh-heh. Made me laugh.

Finally went ahead and bought this score (long overdue), the Varese version with the cartoony cover which I personally prefer. The complete program is nothing short from stellar, but I wish the mix didn't sound so dated. I've heard it performed live couple of times and I wouldn't mind a re-recording. The suite for part 3 is a nice addition and I might sell off the Varese club edition of it given it has all the major highlights.

Well, put down your money and give this a try, I think you'll find it quite good. Give the samples a listen.

And oh, what a lovely thread it started last February:

Good excuse for bringing it back up considering the movie will be back in theaters in two weeks.

The samples are a mixed bag for me. That re-recording, while commendable for the work that went into it, feels like approximations of the original score done for a video game adaptation where there wasn't the budget to use an orchestra. And like I said, I've heard it performed live and this score definitely deserves a proper re-recording. Someone start a crowdfunder! wink

P.S. it is cool that it's being shown in theatres again, I'd go see a classic Planet of the Apes marathon in the theatre.
