I agree, phrasing is crucial. I would only say that just because there was certain phrasing under the composer's baton doesn't mean that that was the phrasing he desired, just the best that he was able to get on that day.
Luckily we have Poledouris' performance of some of this material at the Ubeda Film Music Festival as a cross-reference. The Raine performance makes a useful contrast as it is so meticulously metrical. It makes it easier to find the stylistic commonalities in the two Poledouris performances.
Count me as not being a fan of the Varese. Sounds muddy, is still missing about 40% of the score since only Basil's copy of the original planned double lp existed at the time, and just feels unsatisfying in light of the better Intrada. I've already expressed my disdain for the Prometheus due to its bad brickwalled mastering elsewhere.
Intrada mix is awful. Almost all the balance and the volume levels are wrong. NOBODY but the original sound engineer should work on 24 tracks stems. Nobody can mix - today - a multitrack master as it has been mixed in the original way. For this reason I do prefer 100 times to listen to the original stereo tracks (Varese) instead of awfully remixed Intrada tracks.
