Spiderman (2017) - 7/10
Solid fun and Holland is the first actor to play Spiderman in the recent films while he is actually pretty young. He has that youthful feel that is missing from some of the others and the cast actually feels like they are in high school. I enjoyed how the film is written so the characters are aware of other superheroes and the avengers in general. Still it is hard to believe that all the destruction and mayhem that is caused doesn't lead to more assistance from someone else if this is the case, see spoiler.

We see Tony Stark show up as Iron Man during the big boat scene to save the day and yet he doesn't have the mechanisms in his jet that is transporting tons of important things to realize what is going on and that the jet is likely to be destroyed. The risk as well from the jet heading towards the city and nobody else steps in. Yes of course this is a Spiderman movie and we're supposed to give him a chance to fix it but it felt strange. Similarly, the level at which Holland's Spiderman seems to not care about the destruction his actions cause when fighting was a bit concerning to me.

Still, despite the criticisms, they did a great job building the character and the casting was solid. Giacchino's score worked for the most part pretty well despite my lack of interest in it prior to watching the film. I actually left humming the theme for a little bit. I didn't have the same enthusiasm on leaving the theater that many others did but I would gladly watch the sequel despite all the issues I had.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS: 10 out of 10
I like to view this movie every few years because it seems like a perfect film and I love its themes. It won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2007.

In 1984, in East Germany, the secret police censored art, writings or any expressions that were deemed subversive. One of the Stasi has a playwright’s (and his actress girlfriend) apartment totally bugged to make sure that these two artists stick to all Communist sanctioned artistic expressions. However, this secret policeman evolves and changes over time as he listens to the lives of these artists and witnesses the corruption of his government. The playwright, who has artistically played it too safe, also slowly evolves and changes. Art must be truth. I love the principles exhibited by the main characters. I love how various forms of art must, if art is to be authentic, portray all artists’ true vision of reality, not some sanctioned, watered-down and safe vision.

The last two minutes always make me cry.

Nice score by Yared, great acting, and a superb screenplay.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (1935) 7.8/10

The Brothers doing what they do best. Funny stuff! Do not watch if you take anything too seriously! Groucho's delivery was so fast at times, I had to back up the disc more than once to catch his one-liners. (If anyone thinks I'm rating it too high, sorry, but I love the Marx Bros.! The only reason I'm not rating it higher is the opera numbers weigh down the film at times.) This, DUCK SOUP and ANIMAL CRACKERS are among their best.

Gosford Park 9/10 A large, talented cast of everyone from British TV and film in this pre-Downton Abbey film written by Julian Fellowes and directed by Robert Altman. Everyone has a moment to shine and the script is interesting. The direction is strong and unmistakably Altman with overlapping dialogue and great camera work. If you like Downton Abbey you may enjoy it.

Genius (Mini Series ) 4-5

Watched the first episode. It's well made and performed. The first five minutes we're entertained with graphic violence and a sex scene. (and that's not the last of either) Guess we gotta "Game of Thrones" everything nowadays, even Einstein!

Really didn't like the jumping around from "present day" to his "younger years". Directors just can't tell a linear story anymore. Gotta jump around. Don't know if the self indulgent filming style will eventually turn me off, but I'll give the second episode a chance.

Update: Halfway through the series and finding it compelling enough, though there's more drama than science. It's basically "Amadeus" with Einstein instead of Mozart!

King Kong Skull Island 6/10 lots of characters with not much to do and Kong not making much of an jmoression but I liked some if the imagery and John C Reilly and Shea Wigham, Brie Larson is great. The monsters are varied but not that interesting much like the climactic fight.

Free Fire 7.5/10 good cast and enjoyable enough for one long shoot out in a warehouse. Didn't ever feel Tarantino-like either, which is good. IRA buying guns off some Americans in the 70s and the deal goes bad.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes: 6/10

I saw the original for the first time in over twenty years when Cinemark screened it last year. It's easily 9/10. This one is new to me, though I knew how it ends going in.

It put me in mind of RoboCop 2, not in terms of story but the overall feel. They both start off well enough before going in directions too lacking in development to compare with the original. They're entertaining, but in need of a serious rewrite. I wasn't surprised to learn that they were made under near identical circumstances. It certainly had something to say, but didn't quite get there. Brent was too much a Taylor clone for my liking, but Nova was still gorgeous. Cornelius and Zira were a bit off. I liked the ending though.

There's no way should it have had a G rating.

You do know Cornelius was played by a different actor, right?

By the way, I liked the ending too. smile

Yeah, I do. That certainly didn't help, but they gave off a different vibe than in the first film. Him joking about hitting Zira didn't seem right to me.

Him joking about hitting Zira didn't seem right to me.

There's a lot about BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES that isn't right. The script is a mess, a hodgepodge of underdeveloped ideas leading to a pointless ending. One of the worst sequels in film history as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, I guess I should mention that I went to WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES yesterday.

It was okay. I enjoyed more than I did DAWN, but I wouldn't rate it better than the two previous APES reboots. There's still too many plot holes for my taste, and as prequels to "the world of the '68 original," as the filmmakers say they intend these reboots to be, too many frustrating explanations yet unanswered for me.

If I had to give a year to when WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is supposed to take place, I'd have to guess only around 2035! They've got a long way to go still to get to the world of the '68 original.

But, as modern summer tent pole movies go, I'd rate it 8/10.

HIDDEN FIGURES
6/10

THe fact that this film deals with two of my favorite topics- US Space program & Civil rights movement- meant there was no way I wouldn't like it but...
I should have LOVED IT!

Unfortunately, the script and direction were just too formulaic with soap opera elements and extended gags hurting the inherently dramatic subject matter. Still, as like most folks, I had no knowledge of the subject, I am a grateful it was made.

LOkk forward to getting the real story by obtaining the book

Baby Brown 1990 South African cop flick shot for about 340 rand. A YT uploader calls it an "Awesomely Bad Movie." No disagreement on the last two words. I couldn't get through it all in one go, to be honest... why one of the leads plays her role of a tough cop with a really really bad Southern US accent is never clear. But they do explain the movie's name. It's what one cop calls the extra little gun she has stashed in her bottom. I wish I was kidding.

1.5/10

Sounds like it can be book-ended with Red Tails.
