THE LIVES OF OTHERS: 10 out of 10 I like to view this movie every few years because it seems like a perfect film and I love its themes. It won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2007. In 1984, in East Germany, the secret police censored art, writings or any expressions that were deemed subversive. One of the Stasi has a playwright’s (and his actress girlfriend) apartment totally bugged to make sure that these two artists stick to all Communist sanctioned artistic expressions. However, this secret policeman evolves and changes over time as he listens to the lives of these artists and witnesses the corruption of his government. The playwright, who has artistically played it too safe, also slowly evolves and changes. Art must be truth. I love the principles exhibited by the main characters. I love how various forms of art must, if art is to be authentic, portray all artists’ true vision of reality, not some sanctioned, watered-down and safe vision. The last two minutes always make me cry. Nice score by Yared, great acting, and a superb screenplay.

Gosford Park 9/10 A large, talented cast of everyone from British TV and film in this pre-Downton Abbey film written by Julian Fellowes and directed by Robert Altman. Everyone has a moment to shine and the script is interesting. The direction is strong and unmistakably Altman with overlapping dialogue and great camera work. If you like Downton Abbey you may enjoy it.

King Kong Skull Island 6/10 lots of characters with not much to do and Kong not making much of an jmoression but I liked some if the imagery and John C Reilly and Shea Wigham, Brie Larson is great. The monsters are varied but not that interesting much like the climactic fight.

Free Fire 7.5/10 good cast and enjoyable enough for one long shoot out in a warehouse. Didn't ever feel Tarantino-like either, which is good. IRA buying guns off some Americans in the 70s and the deal goes bad.

Him joking about hitting Zira didn't seem right to me. There's a lot about BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES that isn't right. The script is a mess, a hodgepodge of underdeveloped ideas leading to a pointless ending. One of the worst sequels in film history as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, I guess I should mention that I went to WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES yesterday. It was okay. I enjoyed more than I did DAWN, but I wouldn't rate it better than the two previous APES reboots. There's still too many plot holes for my taste, and as prequels to "the world of the '68 original," as the filmmakers say they intend these reboots to be, too many frustrating explanations yet unanswered for me. If I had to give a year to when WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is supposed to take place, I'd have to guess only around 2035! They've got a long way to go still to get to the world of the '68 original. But, as modern summer tent pole movies go, I'd rate it 8/10.

HIDDEN FIGURES 6/10 THe fact that this film deals with two of my favorite topics- US Space program & Civil rights movement- meant there was no way I wouldn't like it but... I should have LOVED IT! Unfortunately, the script and direction were just too formulaic with soap opera elements and extended gags hurting the inherently dramatic subject matter. Still, as like most folks, I had no knowledge of the subject, I am a grateful it was made. LOkk forward to getting the real story by obtaining the book brm
