Chopin: Concert works - version for one piano Dina Yoffe (Erard piano, 1849)
For anyone interested in "authentic" sounding Fryderyk this series from the Chopin Institute, where historical instruments from the mid-19th c. are used, is a treasure. In this one the Latvian-born Yoffe gives excellent performances of the "Là ci darem la mano" variations, the Fantasy on Polish Airs, the Rondo à la Krakowiak and the Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise brillante.
Dastardly goings on in and about an opium den in San Francisco's Chinese quarter.
Despite being deemed a rather slight opera, in this entertaining recording conducted by Richard Bonynge and headlined by big hitters Joan Sutherland (Bonynge's wife) and Tito Gobbi, its 65 minutes is filled to the brim with sparkling "Orientalisms," ecstatic choruses and commanding lead performances.
I'm not into video games at all, but while watching a 1933 animated Cab Calloway video on YouTube I read comments about how that particular animation style at the time influenced the look of a recent game entitled CUPHEAD. It has a retro jazz/big band score by Kristofer Maddigan and it's awesome stuff.
