John Addison
MGM Soundtrack Treasury

English composer John Addison (1920-1998) lent his sophisticated—one is tempted to call it "erudite"—symphonic style to such notable pictures as Tom Jones, Hitchcock's Torn Curtain (replacing Bernard Herrmann), Sleuth, Swashbuckler, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution and A Bridge Too Far. He also wrote the memorable theme to TV's Murder, She Wrote and composed for the stage and concert hall.IMDB

Jeff Alexander

Saddle the Wind

Jeff Alexander (1910–1989) was a staff composer and arranger at M-G-M in the 1950s who wrote a great amount of television music in the 1960s and ‘70s (much of it also at M-G-M). His feature scores encompassed everything from westerns (Escape From Fort Bravo) to Elvis movies (Jailhouse Rock), dramas, comedies, musicals and everything else under the sun. IMDB

William Alwyn
MGM Soundtrack Treasury

William Alwyn (1905-1985) was a prolific English composer who scored over 70 films from 1941-1963 in the U.K., including Odd Man Out, Desert Victory, Fires Were Started, The History of Mr. Polly, The Master of Ballantrae, The Black Tent and The Crimson Pirate. He also composed for the concert hall. IMDB

Naked Spur: Classic Western Scores From M-G-M, The

Daniele Amfitheatrof (1901–1983) was a Golden Age composer who came to Hollywood from Russia by way of Italy. He possessed an advanced compositional style, although cinematically he wrote very much within the conventions of the time. He worked at almost all of the studios during the 1940s and '50s. FSM has released some of his work at M-G-M, including the excellent western scores for The Last Hunt and Devil's DoorwayIMDB

Georges Auric
MGM Soundtrack Treasury

French composer Georges Auric (1899-1983) was a child prodigy who parlayed his relationship with Jean Cocteau (and other influential French artists and composers like Erik Satie and Arthur Honegger) into scores for many of Cocteau's classics like the 1946 Beauty and the Beast. With over 130 scores to his credit—mostly in France but also England (The Queen of Spades) and Hollywood (Roman Holiday)—he is easily one of the most accomplished composers of his generation. IMDB

Monte Walsh

John Barry (1933-2011) is a five-time Oscar winner and one of the most successful and beloved composers ever to write for the movies. His career encompasses everything from the James Bond films to Hollywood epics like Out of Africa and Dances With Wolves. His style is marked foremost by melody but also by a thoughtful economy of gesture that has always added a great sense of style and scope to his projects.FSM has released on CD as many of his scores as possible, from intimate dramas like Petulia to the classic Born Free, the 1976 King Kong and the obscure 1968 gem Deadfall. IMDB

George Bassman
Ride the High Country/Mail Order Bride

George Bassman (1914–1997) was a prolific songwriter, bandleader and Golden Age composer whose Hollywood career was cut short by the blacklist—but he returned to his former studio, M-G-M, in 1962 to score Sam Peckinpah's first masterpiece, Ride the High Country. IMDB

Richard Rodney Bennett

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett (b. 1936) is one of England's finest musicians, with an accomplished career in film, the concert hall and jazz (as a composer and pianist). His best known film scores include Far From the Madding Crowd, Secret Ceremony, Murder on the Orient Express, Enchanted April and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Although accomplished in a wide variety of styles, his film work is especially lauded for its delicacy and taste. IMDB

Elmer Bernstein (1922–2004) had a Hollywood career that lasted over a half a century; invented and reinvented himself as a composer across several genres (jazz, epics, westerns, comedies and adult dramas); and scored more than a few Hollywood classics—The Ten Commandments, The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Escape and Airplane! to name but five. FSM has released a dozen of his scores and counting, but the most popular may be Heavy Metal (1981)—don't be fooled by the title, it's Elmer's "Star Wars." In addition to his prolific work as a composer, Bernstein was a tireless champion of film music as an art form, serving on the boards of several professional organizations and in the 1970s recording his own LP series of classic Hollywood scores, Elmer Bernstein's Film Music Collection, released by FSM as a 12-CD box set. IMDB

As a session musician he played synthesizer on, among others, Michael Jackson's albums “Off the Wall,” “Thriller” and “Bad and Dangerous.” His original work includes scores for Get Crazy, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Milo and Otis, and the Leisure Club source music for Jerry Goldsmith’s Outland.
