The latest CD from Intrada is an expanded, two-disc edition of BACKDRAFT, the 1991 fireman mystery-thriller that was the first of many films Hans Zimmer scored for Ron Howard (others include Frost/Nixon, Hillbilly Elegy and the Da Vinci Code trilogy). Disc One features the full film score in its original mixes, while Disc Two features the score cues from the 1991 CD release (as remixed by the legendary George Martin). The film starred Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Robert De Niro, Scott Glenn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rebecca De Mornay, and Donald Sutherland. (By strange coincidence, since Sutherland passed away just this last Thursday, Backdraft is one of three new releases of scores for his films, along with Howlin Wolf's Murder by Decree and Varese's imminent Eye of the Needle.)

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 487 actors, filmmakers and publicists to join its membership, including the following Music Branch invitees:

Composers Anthony Chue, Marius de Vries, Jerskin Fendrix, Simon Franglen, Jo Yeong-wook, Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch, Fabrizio Mancinelli, Diego Navarro, Martin Phipps, Plínio Profeta, Philippe Rombi, David Sardy, Ryan Shore and Kubilay Uner; songwriters Stephen Bray, Gary M. Clark and Dan Wilson; and music editors Michael K. Bauer, Shari Johanson, Katrina Marie Schiller and Carl Sealove.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE - Lorne Balfe

"And yet, none of the movie’s try-hard appeals to modern audiences are enough to divorce 'Ride or Die' from the original spirit of its franchise, and from the glory days of late 20th century blockbusters that it still represents to some degree. From a Lorne Balfe score that openly quotes Hans Zimmer’s theme from 'The Rock' to a high-flying hijack sequence that drifts off the memory of 'Con Air' to the random cutaway shots of characters holding each other amid a burnt orange sunset as orchestral music keens over the soundtrack, 'Ride or Die' is ineffably anchored to the age when Jerry Bruckheimer was king."

David Ehrlich, IndieWire

CORA BORA - Miya Folick

"Accompanied by an original score and songs from Miya Folick, 'Cora Bora' settles into its own place in the indie rocker-girl genre quite nicely. It doesn’t try hard to be anything it isn’t, and flourishes by pulling from the memorable successes of small films like it. But though the film itself is modest, the heralding of Stalter as a legitimate star is not."

Coleman Splide, The Daily Beast

"Stalter also turns out to have a pretty, if unpolished, singing voice. Cora’s songs (penned by Miya Folick, whose own music soundtracks much of the film, along with screenwriter Rhianon Jones) are pulled from her own life, and their lyrics are hilarious in their jadedness. 'Dreams are stupid and so are you for believing in them,' goes one. 'Why try and be a better person when dating apps exist,' goes another. When a stranger (Margaret Cho) describes one -- which starts with the line 'Love is a joke and it’ll break your heart'” -- as a love song, Cora rejects the label with a flatness that hints at a deeper hurt."
