The latest release from Intrada pairs two early scores by Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Laurence Rosenthal -- A RAISIN IN THE SUN, starring Sidney Poitier, and REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT, starring Anthony Quinn. Intrada had paired these two scores once before, but this new release features previously unreleased music from Requiem.
The latest soundtracks from Quartet present the first CD releases of scores for three films produced by American International Pictures: the music from the biopic DE SADE, starring Keir Dullea and scripted by Richard Matheson, with a score by veteran songwriter and session musician Billy Strange, the Quartet release featuring both the full score from the film as well as the re-arranged LP cues; and a disc pairing two ecologically themed 1970s sci-fi horror movies - THE FOOD OF THE GODS, director Bert I. Gordon's second loose adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel (his first was Village of the Giants), music by Elliot Kaplan, and FROGS, starring Ray Milland and Sam Elliott, with an electronic score by A.I.P. veteran Les Baxter.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
ALL SHALL BE WELL - Veronica Lee
"The plot is ultimately straightforward, and because of that, it occasionally feels a little too thin. The occasional complication or unexpected twist could infuse the story with a bit more surprise or feeling of urgency than it currently has. The lack of music and sparse score is a missed opportunity to elevate some moments as well. But even so, the details are compelling enough that it’s still a captivating watch without that -- especially for those who may be less familiar with certain elements of Chinese culture. The debate about whether to bury Pat at sea or in a columbarium, for instance, fascinated me. The fact that Yeung showcased Pat and Angie’s large group of queer friends was extremely moving and felt accurate as someone who belongs to the LGBTQ+ community and often gravitates towards others who belong to it."
Taylor Gates, Collider
AZRAEL - Toti Gudnason
"Even if it’s a fascinating and well-executed concept, one has to eventually wonder: To what end? 'Azrael' makes a ferocious meal out of its lack of talking, subbing in some stellar sound design and carefully chosen needle drops and score cues. Katz’s film is occasionally complicated by the necessity to stick to Barrett’s vision. Audiences, especially those familiar with the biblical nature of Azrael’s namesake (Azrael is an archangel of death), won’t need to be spoon-fed -- especially when the character makes it to the cult’s eerie chapel, run by an equally chilling priestess. But some may crave a story that is more resolute, its answers more definitive and less left up to viewer interpretation."
Coleman Spilde, The Daily Beast
"Katz has a talent for staging fight and chase sequences, which is basically all that happens here, teaming up with Estonian DP Mart Taniel ('Captain Volkonogov Escaped') to get plenty of visual mileage out of a $12-million budget. The forest setting nonetheless feels a tad redundant -- not unlike the plot itself -- and 'Azrael' could have benefited from more variety all around, although the score by Toti Gudnason ('Lamb') and the Blair brothers ('The Toxic Avenger') manages to keep the vibe pulsing."
Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter
MY OLD ASS - Jaco Caraco, Tyler Hilton
"That sentimental writer’s dawdling waterfront scenery ogling, odd addiction to bittersweetness, and penchant for using an unexpected rainstorm as an aphrodisiac usurps the unassuming, lean filmmaking of 'My Old Ass'' more comic first half. When this happens, the cutesy and overdramatic score (from Jaco Caraco and Park’s husband, Tyler Hilton) finally makes sense. Clocking in at just under 90 minutes, 'My Old Ass' barely has room to be one kind of movie, so its hard turn into swoony romance often feels like it’s scrambling to make up for lost time."
Jacob Oller, Paste Magazine
THE SUBSTANCE - Raffertie
"As with her lean-and-mean feature debut 'Revenge,' Fargeat writes a tight script focused on very few characters. She matches her talented on-screen collaborators with an equally formidable team behind-the-camera including cinematographer Benjamin Kracun, who builds on the lurid pink and blue color scheme of 'Revenge' morphing it into a bold and bright color palette fit for Beverly Hills, costumes by Emmanuelle Youchnovski, who incorporates even more eye-catching colors and materials to shape each character’s personalities, and composer Raffertie, whose catchy and propulsive beats make the movie feel like it’s speeding past traffic on the 405."
Monica Castillo, RogerEbert.com
"At a highly pitched emotional moment near the end, the score (by the one-named composer Raffertie) references one of the most famous music cues in cinematic history: the spiraling love-and-death theme of Bernard Herrmann’s score for 'Vertigo,' adapted from a similar leitmotif in Wagner’s 'Tristan und Isolde.' Just as was the case when Michel Hazanavicius used that cue in the soundtrack of his silent-film pastiche 'The Artist,' the effect is to take anyone who’s seen 'Vertigo' directly out of the experience of watching the movie in front of them and make them start ruminating about why any filmmaker in their right mind would lift such a familiar theme. A later snippet from Richard Strauss’ 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' makes similarly clumsy use of a musical passage universally associated with '2001: A Space Odyssey.' Is the intention here to parody the films being sampled, to pay them homage, or simply to goose the audience’s attention with an easily recognizable burst of music pre-laden with emotional significance? Fargeat makes it hard to tell what these borrowings are meant to accomplish, besides hitting us over the head."
Dana Stevens, Slate Magazine
"Fargeat flaunts an exciting hyperactive style. Ultra wide-angle shots, close-ups and a bubble-gum color palette contribute to the film’s surreal -- and at times uncanny -- visual language. The British composer Raffertie’s thunderous score adds an appropriately ominous touch, especially during moments of corporeal mutilation."
Lovia Gyarkye, The Hollywood Reporter
WILL & HARPER - Nathan Halpern
"Directed by Josh Greenbaum ('Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,' 'Strays') and featuring a plaintive score by Nathan Halperin, plus an excellent affinity for the use of soulful music, if 'Will & Harper' produces initial skepticism, it quickly disarms with a sweetness and tenderness that is touching and earnest. It’s funny and entertaining, too, never at the expense of the subject matter, and strikes an effective balance between engaging and amusing the viewer while packing in essential conversations about tolerance via the two friends’ worldviews. Ferrell’s warmth and gentle mien is genuinely tender, and Harper is a good-humored figure, achingly exposed about her re-entry into the world."
