Quartet has announced three new releases celebrating the centennial of the legendary Henry Mancini -- a two-disc expanded edition of his Oscar-nominated score for the original 1964 film version of THE PINK PANTHER, which features arguably his most famous instrumental theme, and includes both the first release of the original film score tracks as well the popular album recording; a two-disc exanded edition of his score for Blake Edwards' musical DARLING LILI, which was nominated for three Oscars including two for the song score by Mancini and lyricist Johnny Mercer and their original song "Whistling Away the Dark," featuring the original LP tracks, the Mancini underscore, Mercer's song demos, and instrumental version of the songs; and a new edition of the soundtrack for director Martin Ritt's 1970 coal miner drama THE MOLLY MAGUIRES, starring Sean Connery and Richard Harris, featuring an expanded and remastered edition of Mancini's gorgeous replacement score as well as the unused Charles Strouse score that was previously included on Kritzerland's Molly Maguires.d

The Hollywood Reporter has published what is purportedly the list of songs eligible for the 2024 Oscar in that category. I have included that list at the bottom of this column. The Academy is currently scheduled to announce their shortlists (including the 20 films shortlisted for Original Score) next Tuesday, December 18.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

GLADIATOR II - Harry Gregson-Williams

"It also gets a lot right. The sets are stunning. There’s a fantastic score by Scott regular Harry Gregson-Williams ('House Of Gucci,' 'The Martian'). And, most important of all for a 'Gladiato'r movie, the combat sequences feel immersive and gripping. Within minutes, we’re dropped into the swirling maelstrom of a naval attack. Waves crash on the stone ramparts, defending soldiers are impaled by flying spears and catapults fling giant flaming rocks that blow apart the approaching wooden ships like a cannonball through cocktail sticks. It’s brutal, gory and as good as anything in the original. Equally explosive are the arena contests which have evolved to include rabid baboons, a supersized rhino and bloodthirsty CGI sharks that patrol the depths of a submerged stadium. Academics are already angry about the historical inaccuracies (no Great Whites in The Eternal City, apparently) but when it’s this fun, who cares?"

Alex Flood, NME

"As he demonstrated in the far more uneven 'Napoleon,' Scott is in his element filming massive crowds and blood-soaked battles, the grandiosity accentuated by Harry Gregson-Williams’ high-drama score. 'Gladiator II' might not have a protagonist with the scorching glower of Crowe’s Maximus, but it has plenty of the eye-popping spectacle and operatic violence audiences will want."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
