DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
DARIO ARGENTO PANICO - Alessandro Baldessari
"Shot at some of the locations seen in Argento’s films and partly at a luxury resort (Argento has penned his scripts in hotel rooms for decades), 'Panico' serves as both vivisection and diorama -- effectively bottling the visual and tonal essence of Argento while nimbly questioning why that formula works. The documentary comes from producer Giada Mazzoleni, director of photography Patrizio Saccò, editor Claudio Rossoni, and sound designer Dino Gervasoni -- with appropriately synth heavy atmospherics and spine-tingling music by Alessandro Baldessari. The images rendered are consistently arresting without sacrificing the push and pull required for naturalistic suspense."
Alison Foreman, IndieWire
LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES: THE GALLANTS - Ricky Ho
"For proof of why 'Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants' mostly works despite Tsui’s literal-minded approach, see the big climactic battle between Guo Jing and Venom West. It starts with starch-stiff smack talk between colorfully dressed side characters -- the Mongolians and Venom West -- accompanied by a rousing and somewhat treacly orchestral score. Then Guo and Huang exchange some equally inflexible expository dialogue to hype up what’s about to happen and establish the stakes. Finally, there’s some appropriately grandiose computer-generated combat."
Simon Abrams, RogerEbert.com
MONOLITH - Benjamin Speed
"If the film had continued in this direction, it would have been a decent exercise in isolation. Shot in those cool gray tones that mean to imply sophistication, the visuals suffocate us inside the house in a way that suits the story, even if we do begin to feel like the pet turtle seen imprisoned in a fetid tank. (The ka-bump, ka-bump beat of a muffled pulse on the sound mix is a nice touch, as is Benjamin Speed’s muttering score.) Sullivan is, for a while, so captive to her microphone that I began to place bets on whether she’d stand; later, when she steps out for a smoke, the sight of fresh oxygen -- even on screen -- makes you want to gasp for breath."
Amy Nicholson, Variety
RIFF RAFF - Adam Taylor
"The film also makes great use of flashbacks, taking us through this family's tangled past and largely forgoing the use of long, expository monologues. This show-don't-tell style adds to 'Riff Raff''s lively energy, and ensures that there's never a dull moment. However, the sporadic feel also leads to some jarring cuts between scenes that, while not hugely cumbersome, are at times distracting. Ominous music and slow zooms help build the film's precarious atmosphere, giving the vibe of a vintage mystery movie, and adding a fun visual layer to the film. The movie's lofty stakes are made even higher by the fact that every character is developed and likable. We may not agree with all their actions, but each of them is given sufficient depth, aided by the individual performances and chemistry of the cast."
Shaina Weatherhead, Collider
"While Montiel is still a great 'actors director,' eliciting grounded, and at times wonderfully mordant, performances from his stacked ensemble cast, the script from John Pollono has stranded them in a film that plays like a copy of a copy of a copy of several better films. One scene is even underscored with music that evokes Martin Scorsese’s 'After Hours.' If you’re going to rip something off so blatantly, it’s probably wise not to steal from something so iconic."
Marya E. Gates, IndieWire
SUPERBOYS OF MALEAGON - Sanchin Jigar
"There’s a delightful symmetry to the fact that in the end, the real Nasir and his friends got their own Bollywood-style picture about their Bollywood-style spoofs. Kagti pulls us into their world so convincingly -- with a big assist from Sachin Jigar’s enchanting score -- that we can’t help rooting for them even as we know exactly where they’ll wind up."
Elizabeth Weitzman, The Wrap
"'Superboys of Malegaon' is itself a dramatization of this interplay of agendas and ideas. It has a bright spirit and infectious energy, thanks partly to Sanchin-Jigar’s ear worm of a score and editor Anand Subaya’s crisp cuts, which keep things moving inevitably forward, and the first half especially might remind older viewers of that golden period in the 1990s and early aughts when home video presale money allowed for the funding of lots of low- to medium-budget comedy dramas about somewhat regular people scrambling after a dream, like 'The Full Monty,' 'Tampopo,' 'Big Night,' 'Brassed Off' and 'Be Kind Rewind' (which would fit beautifully on a double-bill with 'Superboys').
Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com
YOU CAN'T STAY HERE - Greg Sabo
"Verow, who also served as cinematographer on 'You Can’t Stay Here,' makes do with the film’s low budget scrappiness, but it’s an aesthetic choice that doesn’t always work, much like when a supporting character acts so out-of-sorts that it pulls you out of the emotions of the scene. The movie looks too digital, too crisp, taking the audience out of the 1990s and into the 2020s. It’s a gamble that doesn’t pay off, and in scenes like purple-ish day-for-night shots and those meant to take place in a club, it really looks worse for wear. The same could be said for the film’s sound, which isn’t mixed well. The mics on set didn’t account for echoes or other rookie mistakes. Not even Greg Sabo’s heavy-handed synth score can soften the need for retakes or investment in better equipment."
