Intrada has just released their latest Kickstarter-sponsored re-recording, of Frank Skinner's score for the horror-comedy classic ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, plus cues from ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE KEYSTONE KOPS, composed by William Lava, Henry Mancini and Herman Stein.

The latest releases from Buysoundtrax and its related labels are -- STARSHIP INVASIONS, the 1977 sci-fi B-movie starring Robert Vaughn and Christopher Lee, with a score by Gil Melle; a re-release of Elmer Bernstein's symphonic score for the little-seen 1989 sci-fi adventure SLIPSTREAM; and STAR TREK: A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION, a two-disc re-release of the mid-80s Label X re-recordings of suites from original Star Trek episode scores, featuring music by George Duning, Jerry Fielding, Gerald Fried, Sol Kaplan, Samuel Matlovsky and Joseph Mullendore, plus the series theme by Alexander Courage.

Mutant recently announced an upcoming LP of Alan Silvestri's score for Netflix's megabudget science-fiction adventure THE ELECTRIC STATE, directed by Silvestri's Avengers collaborators the Russo brothers. This is of course part of the current trend of major films and scores getting released on vinyl only instead of on CD, as was still the norm pre-pandemic. For those interested in other (fairly) recent and upcoming vinyl-only scores (I am of course not counting download releases), there is a list at the end of this column.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

DESTROY ALL NEIGHBORS - Ryan Kattner, Brett Morris

"'Destroy All Neighbors' is one of those movies I knew I’d like the minute the opening credits started. Though many films abandon them these days, opening titles can be fantastic tone-setters, especially in the realm of horror, and director Josh Forbes clearly understands this. So he recruited animator Rich Zim to give us something that’s both dazzling on its own and, with the aid of music by Ryan Kattner and Brett Morris, delivers a taste of the film that follows in microcosm: An all-out assault on the senses that’s fun, funny, and still capable of making you a little queasy. That’s 'Destroy All Neighbors' in a nutshell, but that’s also just the beginning."

Matthew Jackson, Paste Magazine

EX-HUSBANDS - Rob [Robin Coudert]

"Though loosely in the vein of early Woody Allen, or mid Noah Baumbach, the writing here has none of their astringency. In DP Alfonso Herrera Salcedo’s polite, friendly camerawork, the guys contend with such issues as an unexpectedly seaweedy beach, the no-show of an acquaintance for a diving trip, and the growing-apart pains that adult friends experience, as in the way all the others regard Lowry’s giggling gift of a pneumatic sex toy as too juvenile for the men they have become. And it settles further into this winsome groove, pillows plumped by Rob Coudert’s somewhat anonymous score, once the cowed Pearce men return to New York to discover that life has thrown them another of its sad curveball inevitabilities. Will this jolt of actual mortality nudge them out of their mopiness? The best 'Ex-Husbands' can do is to summon a heartfelt, wistful maybe."

Jessica Kiang, Variety

GOLDEN YEARS - Carsten Meyer

“Golden Years” moves through these forked journeys at an extremely casual pace, which can make the whole thing feel more than a little insubstantial. After all, at the end of the day Peter and Alice will be materially fine, and the sunny cinematography and Carsten Meyer’s cloying, Casio-heavy score do little to make Alice’s late-in-life sexual rumspringa feel all that vital. At the end of the day, these characters simply don’t have any real problems, and it can be aggravating to see folks hem and haw about their futures amid their elegantly furnished Swiss homes. (Even Alice’s bohemian son, who takes her in after an angry Peter kicks her out for leaving him on the cruise, hosts his nightly Tinder hookups in a decidedly cozy bungalow.)

Clint Worthington, RogerEbert.com

THE GORGE - Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross

"Before you know it, the philosophical Levi has fallen in love with Drasa, and vice versa. And then 'The Gorge' really kicks into gear. Without spoiling anything, Derrickson’s film becomes the one that it feels like he’s most interested in, involving crazy set pieces and wicked creature design, all set to another phenomenal score from Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor. The team behind the 'Challengers' soundtrack (still maybe the biggest Oscar snub of the year) delivers another excellent score that elevates this film’s action in a manner that shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s the fuel that really drives this action movie."

Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

"There are touches of above-average streaming craft here, distancing it from the standard Netflix equivalent -- an indistinctive yet solid score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, some grand cinematography from Guillermo del Toro fave Dan Laustsen -- but the film bears too much of that synthetic Apple feel, as if it was primarily made to show off the abilities of a new iPhone. Given how so many of the company’s streaming shows and films are barely marketed, 'The Gorge' feels like another one that will easily, and deservedly, disappear into the abyss."

Benjamin Lee, The Guardian

"As surely as Derrickson must eventually close the gap between his deadly lovebirds, so must he plunge us into that ominous ravine. What’s going on down there won’t blow too many minds, but it might get some pulses racing. 'The Gorge' borrows freely from the creepier and crawlier portions of 'King Kong,' and from the shimmering unease of 'Annihilation.' You might be reminded, too, of itchy-tasty survival horror when Levi and Drasa take a break from fleeing and shooting to spool up a reel of convenient laboratory exposition. It’s all a tad conventional after the more novel genre play of the first hour, but Derrickson handles the mayhem with the steady hand you’d expect from a filmmaker with both superhero spectacles and supernatural thrillers on his resume. The poisoned air supply, shifting the color tint every few minutes, is a nifty touch. So, naturally, is the latest score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, slumming it in style with rock chords and eerie sirens -- the right soundtrack for this war of the worlds."

A.A. Dowd, IGN

"Still, the highlights outweigh the lackluster elements. The first act spends a generous amount of time setting up the characters, providing tangible rooting interest and establishing the realities of Levi and Drasa’s insular worlds. Through the aesthetics of her wardrobe, hair and lighting, Bartholomew’s introduction lays subtle groundwork for distrust reflecting the shadowy gray territory she commands. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ pristine, industrial synth-forward score adds a fittingly dissonant soundscape with melodies that blossom once the pair’s relationship takes shape. Sope Dirisu, whose brief appearance as the soldier Levi relieves from his post, sells the sincerity behind his expository dialogue, explaining the facility’s inner workings and the backstory of the underworld."

Courtney Howard, Variety

"The film’s general rigidity and lack of thrills become more apparent when Levi accidentally falls into the gorge. A terrified Drasa goes after him, and what the two find in the cavernous abyss is unsettling. The world beneath them is a trap of mutated insects, noxious gases and skeletal monsters that bear some resemblance to the White Walkers in 'Game of Thrones.' Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ music adds to the eeriness of this disquieting atmosphere. Derrickson offers a handful of memorable shots and genuine jump scares, but the director’s attempts to build dread in these moments come too late to have their intended impact. With so much of the film dedicated to establishing Levi and Drasa’s backstory and their romance, 'The Gorge' is slow to get going on the action."

Lovia Gyarkye, The Hollywood Reporter

MICKEY 17 - Jung Jae-il

"But, messy as it is, the filmmaking so energetically delivers its acidic pessimism that it’s rarely unpleasant. Bong’s visual gags and Jung Jae-il’s parodic music are shot through with bitterness. The characters are all too odd to ever truly be familiar; Pattinson in particular relishes in creating a pair of completely distinct little gremlins. Bong coaxes out empathy, but towards disgusting-cute creatures. Humans have had their chance. Maybe they’ll get a second one, if they’re bold enough to rise up against all the forces keeping them down. The shotgun approach to this message means that none of its pellets make full contact -- the Trump imagery is too literal, the cloned labor concept too secondary, the violent takeover of another world too played out -- but who can blame Bong for unloading so spectacularly? It’s bad out there and, unlike Mickey, we’re on our last life."

Jacob Oller, The AV Club

"Fiona Crombie’s production design gives the movie an imposing scale (with a Mar-a-Lago vulgarity in the ostentatious décor of the Marshalls’ quarters), though for a project shot by Darius Khondji and screened in IMAX, the visuals are nothing special. As usual for Bong, unexpected music choices liven things up, from quirky waltzes to carnivalesque riffs in a Danny Elfman mode."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

RULE BREAKERS - Jeff Beal

"Mostly, 'Rule Breakers' is as joyful as its standout score by Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal. You’ll root for the immensely likable team as they become immersed in the world of competitive robotics. Call it the nerd Olympics. Teams of students from all over the world construct robots capable of performing tasks such as scooping up balls and throwing them into baskets."

Stephen Humphries, The Christian Science Monitor

SKIN DEEP - Richard Ruzicka

"There’s obviously an ironic undertone to the Schaads’ decision to call this movie 'Skin Deep,' and so it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that their script glosses over the more superficial aspects of its premise. It doesn’t belabor Mo’s enthusiasm over inheriting Tristan’s six-pack, or hone in on how delightful it is for Leyla -- a former dancer -- to suddenly have the lungs of a long-distance runner. Instead, this film opts for an impressionistic approach to its fantasy, as long scenes give way to free-flowing rushes of pure feeling (most of them carried by Richard Ruzicka’s lush and evocative score)."

David Ehrlich, IndieWire

"In this regard, the film has all the boldness of a work by the great David Cronenberg even as it is a bit more grounded than that. It is important to note that such a comparison, while a testament to the strengths of the film, is also reductive as it is only one small fraction of what 'Skin Deep' has in store. The questions being raised are its own as it quickly moves beyond the novelty of observing the characters post-swap to more melancholic beats. It is in this where Emde draws us into the inner tumult facing Leyla as she observes Tristan going off to swap from afar. Though she is not always herself, with the film taking on a more transitory state in the hands of cinematographer Ahmed El Nagar and composer Richard Ruzicka, we never forget the look that shows how all is not well in paradise. There were allusions to her well-being here and there, though it is in her eyes that we see the pain she is carrying with her. While we see the wounds she carries with her on her arms, it is when we hear the despair creep into her voice that we truly understand the devastation that is underneath it all."

Chase Hutchinson, Collider

SPACE: THE LONGEST GOODBYE - Ramachandra Borcar

"The film ends with Coleman sharing that if she could have stayed aboard the space station for another six months, she would have stayed 'in a minute.' Mizrahy underscores her confession with overly serious music, as if this is the bleakest moment yet. As if this statement should have us worried for Coleman. As if being in space were an addiction. But, again, to Han’s point, isn’t that the kind of dedication you’d want from someone who has signed up for a three-year mission to Mars?"

Marya E. Gates, RogerEbert.com
