La-La Land has announced two new score CD releases, expected to ship later this month.

UNION PACIFIC: THE PARAMOUNT WESTERNS COLLECTION VOL. 2, is a four-disc set that features music from the following films: Union Pacific (John Leipold, Victor Young, Leo Shuken, Charles Bradshaw), The Virginian (Daniele Amfitheatrof), Blue (Manos Hadjidakis), California, The Paleface (both by Victor Young), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Cyril J. Mockridge), Red Mountain (Franz Waxman), The Lonely Man (Nathan Van Cleave) and The Tin Star (Elmer Bernstein), plus individual cues from Texas Rangers Ride Again, Tombstone: The Town Too Tough to Die, Whispering Smith, The Redhead and the Cowboy and Run for Cover.

They are also releasing an "Ultimate Cut" edition of Harry Manfredini's score for what is arguably the best of all the Jason Voorhees slasher films, FRIDAY THE 13TH, PART VI: JASON LIVES, from 1986, directed by Tom McLoughlin.

And in conjunction with their ongoing series of expanded and remastered James Bond score CDs, they are releasing a new vinyl edition of John Barry's classic GOLDFINGER.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

BLACK TEA - Armand Amar

"Filled with polished neon-lit photography by Aymerick Pilarski, the film -- which was shot mostly in Taiwan (both Chang Han and Wu Ke-Xi are Taiwanese) -- is handsomely made, although the treacly score by Armand Amar ('The Concert') subtracts from some of its classiness. During its best moments, such as the sequence in which Aya accompanies Cai to his lush tea plantation in the countryside, we experience the kind of soulful and evocative filmmaking that characterizes Sissako’s best work, transporting the viewer to a strange world with its owns set of rules. It’s too bad the rest of 'Black Tea' fails to live up to that standard, taking an intriguing character like Aya to a fascinating place, only to lose us along the way."

Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter

G20 - Joseph Trapanese

"Still, the film’s thunderous intentions don’t wholly distract from its more exhilarating sequences. As Davis showed in 'The Woman King,' she has the undaunted exterior necessary for action cinema (even if the camera often cuts around her fighting). The sequencing of the set pieces, supported by Joseph Trapanese’s brooding score, inspires sharp moments of tension, such as the initial raid on the summit or Sutton’s many close escapes. Each member of Sutton’s family also does their part, with everyone getting a crowd-pleasing scene. There’s also the frigid relationship between Sutton and Serena that warms as the film continues, providing glimmers of heart in a militaristic picture."

Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com

HURRY UP TOMORROW - Abel Tesfaye, Daniel Lopatin*

"The music, as you can likely guess, is made up almost entirely from tracks pulled from the 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' album and earlier Tesfaye releases. There are a few notable exceptions: Frequent collaborator and 'Uncut Gems' composer Daniel Lopatin teams up with Tesfaye once again to provide the score for 'Hurry Up Tomorrow,' lacing the brooding visuals with the discordant ambient menace and mischievous experimentation that is the signature of his own long-running, pseudonymous project, Oneohtrix Point Never. I'd say this movie would've been a better album but… well, it's literally a movie based on an album."

Toussaint Egan, IGN.com

"Equal to Tesfaye’s navel-gazing, Shults uses every trick in the music-video playbook to conjure a vivid, ultra-saturated but not quite realistic universe where the Weeknd is a brightly burning sun everyone revolves around. Like discarded footage from Vincent Gallo’s no less indulgent 'Brown Bunny,' he uses swirling cameras to capture one sequence of driving and thinking after another, all punctuated by a score from Daniel Lopatin that burbles and oscillates like an end-of-the-world synthesizer orgy. Yet despite Shults’ contributions to a script co-written by Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, the trio can’t (or don’t bother to) come up with enough material of substance for an actual story, instead leaning heavily on atmosphere punctuated with predictable conflict, and eventually, violence."

Todd Gilchrist, Variety

*My favorite review of this film came from two young moviegoers I passed on my way out after the end credits.
Young Man: Take The Weeknd out of the movie and it would be pretty good.
Young Woman: That was the worst movie I've ever seen.

TORNADO - Jed Kurzel

"We’re thrown into the deep end, opening on our eponymous lead (Koki) racing across a desolate field and into a forest as a ruthless band of criminals slowly stalk into shot. Their pursuit is guided by the foreboding beat of Jed Kurtzel's battering score -- all heavy drums and low strings -- until the characters arrive at a country manor, where the music drops out and the treachery of silence threatens to expose Tornado's hiding spot."

Hanna Ines Flint, IGN.com

"Despite the discordancy this tonal back-and-forth creates, it doesn’t diminish the entrancing quality that 'Tornado' has at its best, its crisp and sparse outdoor cinematography in the inhospitable Scottish lochlands blending seamlessly with a haunting, atmospheric score leaning on elements of synth and harp. Watchable despite its flaws, well cast all around, but seemingly unsure of how it intends to be read, it’s a blade that ultimately cuts both ways."
