Oscar Predictions and Other End Of 2024 Lists

Predictions are in boldface, followed by those which I personally would nominate in italics. As with previous years' lists, for several categories I have NOT provided my own nominations, since frankly I know jack about costumes, sound and so forth, though more and more I try to pay attention to sound in particular. Films that I have listed as my own personal nominations yet which will definitely not be nominated -- either because they are ultimately ineligible in those categories or simply not shortlisted -- are marked with an asterisk.
The actual nominations will be announced this Thursday morning around 5:30 am (Pacific Time). I would have finished this list earlier, but things have been rather distracting in Los Angeles County for the last week or two. You may have seen some pictures in the news.

La-La Land has announced three new CDs, which are expected to begin shipping next week: an expanded, two-disc edition of the score for Timothy Dalton's final film as James Bond 007, LICENCE TO KILL, featuring the full score by two-time Oscar nominee Michael Kamen (Die Hard, Lethal Weapon) plus source cues and the sequencing from the original 1989 CD release; a 3-disc edition of Trevor Jones' sweeping symphonic score for the lavish Jim Henson/Frank Oz fantasy THE DARK CRYSTAL, featuring the full score Jones composed for the original, longer, unreleased cut of the film, as well as the sequencing from the 1982 LP; and the first-ever release of the score for BEVERLY HILLS COP III, the "Die Hard at Disneyland" sequel directed by John Landis and scored by legendary record producer Nile Rodgers (Coming to America).
The latest releases from Buysoundtrax and its associated labels are THE BRUCE BROUGHTON COLLECTION VOL. 1, featuring two TV-movie mystery scores by the Oscar-nominated and multi-Emmy-winning composer, One Shoe Makes It Murder (1981) and his Emmy-nominated score for Killjoy (1981); the score for the 1979 TV movie GOLD OF THE AMAZON WOMEN, composed by Gil Melle (The Andromeda Strain); and THE GOLDEN AGE OF SCIENCE FICTION VOL. 7, featuring cues from Journey to the Seventh Planet (Ib Glindemann, Ronald Stein), Reptilicus (Sven Gyldmark, Les Baxter) and The Time Travellers (Richard LaSalle).

Kronos has announced two new CD releases - Ronald Stein's score for the 1956 sci-fi horror flim THE SHE CREATURE, and Bert Shefter's score for the 1953 noir NO ESCAPE.
The latest release from Caldera is HARD TRUTHS AND OTHER MUSIC FOR THE WORKS OF MIKE LEIGH, featuring Gary Yerson's score for Leigh's just-released Hard Truths, his previous feature Peterloo, and two of his plays, Grief and Two Thousand Years.
This year's Golden Globe winners in the music categories were the CHALLENGERS score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, and the song "El Mal" from EMILIA PEREZ. Since I never did get around to listing this year's nominees in a Friday column, they can be found at the bottom of this page.
And for all who follow the Academy Awards, due to the catastrophic fire situation in the Los Angeles area, the announcement of this year's Oscar nominations has been postponed from next Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19. (As I update this column at home on Wednesday evening, there are fires in the hills above where I live, and I'm waiting to see if the evacuation zone is extended to my neighborhood. Welcome to L.A.! Honestly, as I listen to local news updates about the fire, these columns are pretty much the only thing I'm able to concentrate on.) (They were able to contain the "Sunset Fire" - an especially misleading name, since the evacuation area didn't even reach Sunset, while Sunset Blvd in the Palisades acutually burned - by Thursday morning, but this was the first time I've ever had to have a "go bag" ready to leave my home at a minute's notice).
CDS AVAILABLE THIS WEEK
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse - Isobel Waller-Bridge - Sony (import)
The Outrun - John Gurtler, Jan Miserre - Decca (import) |
