There hasn't been any expansions of any of E.Goldenthal's scores to date. Apart from that our beloved Lala land records is planing to release his 'BATMAN' scores, can we still hope to get several other expansions? I wouldn't really mind to buy an expanded editions and with an improved sound of such scores like 'ALIEN 3', 'TITUS', 'FINAL FANTASY', 'DEMOLITION MAN' and 'INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE'. I wonder if there's a demand for his scores? If there is, the labels should know that! The same applies Michael Kamen.

Other than the unreleased Batman and Robin, I don't see the problem with any of Goldenthal's scores. They are all pretty much perfect, IMHO.

The guys who run the labels are just as much fans of Goldenthal as the rest of us, so question isn't whether or not there is a demand and more about film/album rights & licenses, studio clearances, condition of tapes, etc. It's not that these scores are just sitting in a nice, air-conditioned room and one simply can stroll in, grab what they want and make an expanded album. I don't think you appreciate the huge complexities and effort involved in getting any score released in an expanded fashion.

There's certainly a demand from me. While the albums are wonderful samplings of these scores, there's so much more material not available. Friggin SPHERE for example is missing nearly all the music from the second half of the film. Every note of Goldenthal is pure gold.

(Same goes for Kamen)

I have no interest in any expansions, but there is a long list of completely unreleased Goldenthal items - both film scores and concert works - that I MUCH rather would like to see (recorded and) released:

Scores:

Early student films (like A FISTFUL OF FANTASIES)
COCAINE COWBOYS
BLANK GENERATION
ROSWELL
CRIMINAL JUSTICE
GRAND ISLE
VOICES FROM A LOCKED ROOM
FOOL'S FIRE
BATMAN & ROBIN (not C&C, just the program that EG had planned)

Some non-film music works:

GRENDEL
SHADOW PLAY SCHERZO
PASTIME VARIATIONS
THE TRANSPOSED HEADS
THE KING'S STAG
LIBERTY'S TAKEN

....and several others.

My demand for expanded Goldenthal scores would be second only to expanded Goldsmith scores I think.

On the whole, I find Goldenthal albums to be excellent representations of their respective scores as well as great listening experiences on their own. I'm usually satisfied by the album he puts together.

There are exceptions, such as the aforementioned Sphere, where only half of the recordings made for the film were available for the album. I would love to see this score expanded, because the album is just inadequate. The others I would probably buy for the additional music, but if they took a while to show up, I'd be okay.

I know Goldenthal has done the score to Taymor's film of THE TEMPEST.

But, what has he been doing other than that?

I remember reading a long article somewhere, about how he sustained brain damage, after a chair in which he was leaning back, fell, causing him to hit his head on the tile floor of his kitchen.

Not good.

He seems to have recovered to a certain extent, but his score output has definitely lessened.

Yes, that happened as he was finalizing GRENDEL a few years ago. I, too, suspect the injury had a more severe impact than what the public knows, and that it partially accounts for the low output since then.

he'll be attending Gante's Film Music Festival, so we can ask him how's it going.

Well, at least SPHERE album is pretty bad! Doesn't even include the finale of the movie, which was the only reason I originally bought the CD.

VOICES FROM A LOCKED ROOM

This actually exists as a ultra, ultra rare promo album given out at (I think) a dinner.

Most of the music is Goldenthal adapting music from another composer though. I'm not even sure if he "wrote" anything himself.

Well I haven't heard that score yet but if everyone says the presentation is bad then it must be bad.

Actually (in addition to this), I wouldn't mind an expanded DEMOLITION MAN.

I really liked the score quite a bit, but it's the typical Varese truncated-for-fees-related-issues album that leaves out too much material. What is there is great, but what is missing makes for a less than satisfying listen as it just, well...ends. You're left waiting for the next track to continue the overall dynamic arc of the score and it never comes.

Yes, it's mostly adaptations of Peter Warlock compositions, but from what I've heard there are some original Goldenthal bits too - some bridging material, among other things (I've not seen the film or heard that promo, I'm just going by bits and pieces I've read).

Speaking of which, I would also love to see the original score bits from ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (about 10 minutes worth). There's some excellent music there, the circus sequence comes to mind.

Wasn't the circus sequence taken directly from Titus? Or are we thinking of difference scenes?

I'm talking about the scene when Bono takes the gypsye wagon into the countryside and there's a circus (excuse me if I'm mistaken, but I've only seen the film once awhile back). I can't remember that music being in TITUS, at least not on the soundtrack.

If we're thinking of the same scene (and it sounds like we are), I'm pretty sure that music is from the the last minute or so of "Pickled Heads" from Titus. I remember at the time being disappointed that one of the few scenes set to Goldenthal music was taken from an earlier film.

Oh, I see.

Well, there are supposed to be about 10 minutes of original score in the film, so it must be located elsewhere then.
