If confirmed, this news will shake the world of film music

FWIW, it's still listed on John Williams' official resume at his agency:

And it's not listed on Newman's, who is repped by the same agency:

GSA isn't exactly the greatest when it comes to updating resumes, which can sometimes go years without an update.

The music department credits for Williams, on the IMDb page for the film, have been deleted. It's not looking good.

Ha! I believe it when I see it. Note that NONE of the sites above cite any sources.

If that IS the case, however (unlikely as it is), it can only be because Williams needs the time to finish STAR WARS.

Bridge of Spies doesn't open for another 7 months! There's no way there can be a conflict yet.

I searched twitter, and this "We Are Movie Geeks" site seem to be who first mentioned it on there

https://twitter.com/wearemoviegeeks/status/578183097591590913

And them Empire ran with it, which really made the story blow up

https://twitter.com/empiremagazine/status/578184886550413312

But as stated, WAMG's web article mentions no source:

http://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2015/03/thomas-newman-to-score-steven-spielbergs-bridge-of-spies-stars-tom-hanks/

So I think every other article is just using these guys as a source, even though they have no underlying source.

So I'd classify this as rumor / false reporting for now!

I will be surprised if it's true, but it makes sense. Williams abandoned Harry Potter because of Spielberg, and now he's abandoning Spielberg because of Star Wars. Also, perhaps Spielberg wanted something different with this film, instead of repeating the thriller sound/style from Munich.

I'd rather have Conti replace Goransson on CREED! But a Spielberg film without Williams just seems wrong.

Holy shit.  It's real.

BURBANK, Calif. (March 18, 2015) – DreamWorks Pictures’/Fox 2000 Pictures’ upcoming dramatic thriller directed by three-time Academy Award®-winning director Steven Spielberg (“Saving Private Ryan,” “Schindler’s List”) and starring two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks (“Forrest Gump,” “Philadelphia”), has been titled “Bridge of Spies.” In addition, 12-time Oscar® nominee Thomas Newman (“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Saving Mr. Banks”) has been signed to score the film, as John Williams’ schedule was interrupted and he was unavailable to score the film due to a minor health issue, now corrected.

A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, “Bridge of Spies” tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on October 16, 2015.

Williams, whose credits include “Stars Wars: The Force Awakens” and the “Harry Potter” films, will join Spielberg on his next film, “The BFG,” beginning later this year, continuing their unprecedented collaboration which they have enjoyed for over 40 years.

Newman has scored many films for DreamWorks, including "The Help,” “Road to Perdition" and "American Beauty,” the latter two for which he received Academy Award® nominations for Best Original Score.

“Bridge of Spies” also stars three-time Tony Award® winner Mark Rylance (“Twelfth Night,” “Jerusalem,” “Boeing Boeing”) as Rudolf Abel, a KGB agent defended by Donovan; Scott Shepherd (“Side Effects”) as CIA operative Hoffman; Academy Award® nominee Amy Ryan (“Birdman,” “Gone Baby Gone”) as James’ wife, Mary; Sebastian Koch (“A Good Day to Die Hard”) as East German lawyer Vogel; and Academy Award nominee Alan Alda (“M*A*S*H,” “The Aviator”) as Thomas Watters, a partner at Donovan’s law firm.

Here comes a firestorm we haven't seen since "Timeline" and "Troy".

But I guess the better news is he didn't get Zimmer. Assuming he never asked.

John Williams holds Thomas Newman in high esteem. I wouldn't be surprised he suggested his name to Spielberg

Indiewire is usually a reliable source, but they're just repeating what is said on the Geeks site. There is still no official confirmation of this -- as NO SOURCE IS LISTED.

I don't think Williams would have made this sound like MUNICH at all. Williams is far more versatile than that, and I don't think it's so easy to predict what he would have done.
However, I think I know exactly what a Thomas Newman score for this is going to sound like. I know it's not the popular opinion around here, but (apart from a few scores) I'm not really a fan of T. Newman, and I'm not really happy at this development (though as has been said above, at least he didn't go to Zimmer... actually, I probably would have enjoyed a Zimmer score for this more, as I tend to like his scores for things like FROST/NIXON, but it just would have been a bit depressingly obvious if Spielberg had gone with Zimmer.)

Is that an offical press release from Dreamworks? Or is it just the WATG contents replicated?

The strange thing is the issue of a PR so early on the west coast. it is still early morning.

Egh... I'm pretty sure that Spielberg had a pretty good bead on most of the film composers working today anyway.

Sad news that it won't be JW, but understandable as the guy is 83 and will be busy with STAR WARS for much of the year.

And hey... No Zimmer, and no Giacchino! It's a good day. Spielberg went for a classy composer who has a voice. Seems like a good selection to me.
