I will be surprised if it's true, but it makes sense. Williams abandoned Harry Potter because of Spielberg, and now he's abandoning Spielberg because of Star Wars. Also, perhaps Spielberg wanted something different with this film, instead of repeating the thriller sound/style from Munich. I don't think Williams would have made this sound like MUNICH at all. Williams is far more versatile than that, and I don't think it's so easy to predict what he would have done. However, I think I know exactly what a Thomas Newman score for this is going to sound like. I know it's not the popular opinion around here, but (apart from a few scores) I'm not really a fan of T. Newman, and I'm not really happy at this development (though as has been said above, at least he didn't go to Zimmer... actually, I probably would have enjoyed a Zimmer score for this more, as I tend to like his scores for things like FROST/NIXON, but it just would have been a bit depressingly obvious if Spielberg had gone with Zimmer.) You actually think that John Williams, at 83, is more versatile than Thomas Newman now? I love Williams and I'm saddened by this news, honestly, but if Spielberg was going to pick anyone else to score his movies, we should all be thankful he picked someone with the class and ability of Thomas Newman.

Is that an offical press release from Dreamworks? Or is it just the WATG contents replicated? It's a Dreamworks press release that is replicated within the Indiewire article.

Yes I do. Age has nothing to do with it.

Yes I do. Age has nothing to do with it. Age absolutely has something to do with it! Williams has been set in his ways for years, especially from hearing his action music in the 21st century. I'm not saying it's terrible or anything, but come on, he's been using the same exact orchestrations for every action cue for years (with the notable exception of that No Man's Land cue in War Horse).

Horner always seemed like Williams' heir apparent, particularly with all the work he did with Spielberg years back. Too bad it didn't happen, though at least it's not Zimmer, Desplat or Giacchino. Thankfully. That James Horner is long gone anyway, sadly.

While I'm saddened by the news of one less new John Williams score this year, I am pleased someone like Thomas Newman is gonna have a crack at it. However, I would be even more happy if the gig had gone to DAVID Newman. Now THAT score would have been interesting. David Newman's actually got a project coming, for once not a bottom-dwelling urban comedy. Not sure about the quality of the movie, but hey, it's something!
