Yes, John, that's why I said "well over" a decade, not knowing the exact number of years. And yes. it wouldn't surprise me if Decca did do an audio cassette, but apparently Varese did one, as was their wont in those days.

I'll be close to the front of the line to order this latest edition of what is among my four or five all-time favorite film scores.

Although I'm ecstatic to have lived long enough to enjoy such a complete and so sonically solid an album of this music, I nevertheless wish that Varese still had in print their CD of the original Decca LP. That Newman arrangement/performance of a drastically abridged EGYPTIAN remains a peerless listening experience in its own right. As an LP, it stayed a remarkable well-over-a-decade in the Schwann catalog, and IMHO should never be allowed to go out of print.

It stayed longer than that. I was seeing it in record stores for a good 20 years after its initial release. I even think there was a cassette release.

Actually, though it was probably technically out of print, I picked one up within the past 5 years or so, through that SAE Varese clearance sale they've had going on forever. It's down to a few titles now, but for quite a while there were many early Varese CDs still available.

It looks like it'll be nearly as gorgeous as the SAE "Captain From Castille" release a few years back. I don't know whatever happened to Charles Johnston, who did the graphic design for that set, but it pretty much wins the prize for stunning to look at. I think I would have had to buy it even if I didn't like the music. That's sort of how I feel about the "Egyptian" pictures above -- going to have to own that even if there's nothing on the discs.

I have to say, that is a BEAUTIFUL looking CD.

I wasn't inclined to double dip, but that gorgeous artwork makes it very, very temping indeed.

I must say I'm tempted - very tempted - to buy this again purely for the Jim Titus art. This is a thing of beauty.

One change I hope for - and probably won't get.

Missing from the Varese is a missing vocal when Nefer goes to Sinuhe late in the film. She has a disease and seeks treatment.

this DOES exist.
The vocal is exactly the same vocal used in the lotus pool scene. the vocal was recorded only once, and Herrmann recorded the different orchestral parts over the one vocal.

I love the new cover and the booklet looks very god. Ordered !!!

I was thinking the same thing John. Both The Egyptian and The Robe were in various Boston record stores about 1975, over 20 years! I often mentioned this to a few soundtrack fans and they said it was in their area of the USA too. I think it could still be ordered too. An amazing run!

...... we have to refresh Preston's memory! smile

there are quite a few soundtrack musicals that were in print forever - mostly Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Of background scores, not that many.

the Robe, The Egyptian, and also Picnic. Also Ben Hur, The Big Country.

BTW- The main theme of the film, the theme for Sinuhe the Egyptian is written by Alfred Newman.

Bernard Herrmann had earlier written a theme that was not used.
He later used it as the Baghdad theme in 7th Voyage of Sinbad.

Like the cover but alas I just can't order yet ANOTHER version of this score.
God bless and enjoy for those who want it.
How bout this for a wild weird revolutionary idea?
Put out unreleased Alfred Newman.

Hope you liked O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE on Kritzerland, MOsdtks! For years and years that was one of my own most-hoped-for unreleased Newmans. (To say nothing of its companion piece, Mockridge's LUCK OF THE IRISH.)

Peter, you can smiley-face all you want, but you're not refreshing my memory, you're merely repeating it!

I missed out on the Varese, so this is a must buy to obtain a definitive version. I already have the original LP, the FSM release and the excerpts in the Herrmann box. This should finally do it.

The packaging is gorgeous on this set! It beats the Varese cover by a mile. Also the notes seem to be the best yet ... I always thought the Varese Deluxe skimped on their liners. I am not sure if I will be getting this, however. I think I might save up for He Man. smile

Speaking of the lotus pool sequence, I guess the haunting guitar music, accompanying the female soloist and which is so prevalent in the old Decca recording, has again been suppressed almost inaudibly as it was in the Varese 2-CD set...

Well, I am going to buy THE EGYPTIAN,but your other remark has total merit. An Alfred Newman box set with many of his shorter scores for 20CF would be most welcomed by me and many others. If MV wants to put a premium price on such a box set to guarantee Lalaland wouldn't lose any money on it, it's OK with me. We need more vintage Newman as well as NEVADA SMITH from Paramount.
