It is good to share our enthusiasms, and with the claim that THE EGYPTIAN is among the sublime achievements of film music I most heartily concur. I too look forward to what the always intelligent Jeff Bond will have to say on this topic.

But the cover "art"? Those women crawling over Sinuhe's face are one of the most hideous images I've ever seen. The supine figure tweaked to appear with three breasts is another product of Hollywood's least noble tendencies. The music is sublime, and the movie has moments of nobility. But I do wish that the various archival issues had followed Marco Polo's example and dispensed with artwork that, like the Bella Darvi episode, tend to pollute the overall experience.

To me the new cd artwork is just a beautiful rendition of the original film posters from the 50's.
But we agree on the music which of course is of paramount importance in such a release.

I'm not keen on those old lurid posters either, though from the nostalgia angle they're logical enough.

I do have to say though, that I haven't spotted the three-breasted supine woman. There's the vamp lying under Sinuhe's embrace, but I see two breasts and two shoulders.

Own the Varese, but will get this one as well... love the artwork, and it'll just feel better bringing the average price between the two down... smile

BTW- The main theme of the film, the theme for Sinuhe the Egyptian is written by Alfred Newman.

Bernard Herrmann had earlier written a theme that was not used.
He later used it as the Baghdad theme in 7th Voyage of Sinbad.

I didn't know that! Fascinating information from you, Joe, as always.

I am looking forward to Mike Matessino's remastering, Jeff Bond's notes and Jim Titus' artwork.

For those who are offended by the original 50s poster art, perhaps LLL can design a bumper sticker over the plastic wrap that reads:

ANKH IF YOU LOVE ATON! smile

Thanks, for the laugh, George! And thanks, John, for your powers of observation. I noted the three-breasted alien in TITL RECALL, but I never noticed the multi-boobed beauty in the EGYPTIAN poster. I'll have to take a closer look at the cover when it arrives.

(Ed. note) My Macbook Air constantly creates typos which I have to review and correct -- but this time, the typo was so perfect I'm going to leave it as is.)

Aside to cody1949 -- when you say the idea has merit, are you making a pun on the Jean Simmons character in THE EGYPTIAN?

(Sorry.)

I'll be close to the front of the line to order this latest edition of what is among my four or five all-time favorite film scores.

Although I'm ecstatic to have lived long enough to enjoy such a complete and so sonically solid an album of this music, I nevertheless wish that Varese still had in print their CD of the original Decca LP. That Newman arrangement/performance of a drastically abridged EGYPTIAN remains a peerless listening experience in its own right. As an LP, it stayed a remarkable well-over-a-decade in the Schwann catalog, and IMHO should never be allowed to go out of print.

Thanks for mentioning the original LP. I just found it as a digital album on Spotify (also available for purchase, digital only, at the usual outlets). Not as good as a CD, I know, but nice to be able to hear it - the sound is very good for a 1954 recording that I'm guessing has not been remastered. (The cassette is available on Amazon, but not the Varese CD.)

I'm in the only-now enviable position of not owning any version of this recording. And I grow founder of these ancient epic scores from the fifties with every year. So I'll be picking up this new LLL edition for certain!

Better late than never, Sean. You're in for a treat!

(BTW, as far as the Varese cassette is concerned, its Amazon listing actually is the same as that for the Varese CD, "currently unavailable.")

Not that anyone would want it, I'm guessing, but there are actually a couple different cassette listings on Amazon, and one does have some used copies available.

No connection whatsoever, Preston. Just words that I happened to use.

Like the cover but alas I just can't order yet ANOTHER version of this score.
God bless and enjoy for those who want it.
How bout this for a wild weird revolutionary idea?
Put out unreleased Alfred Newman.

Well, I am going to buy THE EGYPTIAN,but your other remark has total merit. An Alfred Newman box set with many of his shorter scores for 20CF would be most welcomed by me and many others. If MV wants to put a premium price on such a box set to guarantee Lalaland wouldn't lose any money on it, it's OK with me. We need more vintage Newman as well as NEVADA SMITH from Paramount.

Yes! Where is the Alfred Newman Box and Nevada Smith?

I once actually had a conversation with no less than Nick Redman about this very topic. He wanted to do a Newman box, but the problem was that Newman has notoriously been a non-seller lately, and his higher-ups felt that a Newman Box would not be cost-effective.

So I suggested that maybe they should market it like a subscription, with buyers putting money down before the fact. In this way, they'd have a financial base to work with, before releasing it, so they'd be certain of a percentage of buyers.

He thought that was a novel idea, and even thought it might work. But, of course, that was years ago, and there has been no word of such a project since.

Oh well.

I'd certainly buy it. In a proverbial New York minute...

After all, I'm a Newman-iac....

I'm thinking you fellas need to take a Rorschach test. There's some interesting fantasies going on there. Triple-bosomed women you don't see every day. Maybe life-drawing classes or something.

There's only one lying-down lady and she's got both her shoulders tensed upwards, but they ain't bosoms.

I did notice that on the reverse side of the old LP cover there's a pic in the top right hand corner of a bloke embracing a lady with what Egyptologists would recognise as a Philistine warrior helmet on her head, which is a lulu of course.

Then again, I'm assuming he's embracing a woman ... y'can never tell.

I'd order it instantly John, as would a few other old, eh, I mean 'long time collectors' who frequent this board!

If you really would like to see a Newman box set, why use the word "few" ? Use the word "many". You certainly won't encourage any labels to tackle such a project by using the word "few".

Of course you are correct. I suppose I was thinking of a specific "few" for the purposes of this post, lol! But, in reality the "Labels" have a pretty good idea of how many potential buyers are out there.

John, if the Newman Box was loaded with western scores that would help a lot.

And like you suggested, like the Bernstein Club in the 70s people would pay up front for it and see how many advanced orders came in.

I'm not keen on those old lurid posters either, though from the nostalgia angle they're logical enough.

That's it in a nutshell. I suppose this particular instance disturbs me more than usual because the gulf between the spiritual aspirations of the story and the vulgarity of the artwork is so very large. It goes to the question of why we value these albums anyway. Is it because they contain great music in the tradition of Bach and Mozart or is it simply because they evoke childhood memories of Hollywood razzle dazzle?

As for the horizontal lady in question, I was immediately struck by what I took to be a trompe l'oeil effect that made her left shoulder suggest an upturned breast. While I wouldn't put it past some mischievous illustrator to try and sneak that effect past the censors, the fact that nobody else noticed it suggests that the notion must have stemmed from my own overheated adolescent imagination back in 1962.
