Still waiting for Thor's first non-Hollywood score...

You won't see a lot of them in the 90's. This was my personal "Golden Age" in terms of soundtrack acquisitions and interest, and it was mostly Hollywood scores that caught my interest.

But have any non-Hollywood (or even norwegian) scores made your lists so far, on all the years you have participated in?

Sure. Quite a few non-Hollywood scores in earlier (or more contemporary) stuff. Not too many Norwegian scores, though. But funny you should ask...I'll be appearing on Kulturhuset on P2 on Friday and talk about Norwegian film music history. I'll be sure to pick out some favourites then.

"Powder (Jerry Goldsmith - mysteriously, this is a favorite of many JG fans"

Including Jerry himself!

This was a particularly memorable year for me in terms of purchasing scores. I recall buying many over the spring, summer and fall and thinking, "Wow. A lot of great scores this year!"

My top five are pretty familiar:

1. Jerry Goldsmith - First Knight
2. James Horner - Braveheart
3. James Horner - Apollo 13
4. James Newton Howard - Waterworld
5. Jerry Goldsmith - Powder

Runners up:

John Debney - Cutthroat Island.
Alan Silvestri - Judge Dredd
James Horner - Casper
Michael Kamen - Mr. Holland's Opus.
Carter Burwell - Rob Roy

Can't even reach to 5 titles for this '95 year.

  • BEYOND RANGOON by Hans Zimmer
  • TO DIE FOR by Danny Elfman

    plus

  • Elmer Bernstein's rejected '95 score for THE SCARLET LETTER

    &

  • Jerry Goldsmith's re-recording on Varese Sarabande in 1995 of Alex North's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE.

It was a pretty good year for art films, though:

  • Claude Chabrol's LA CEREMONIE
  • ULYSSES' GAZE by Theo Angelopoulos
  • Michelangelo Antonioni's BEYOND THE CLOUDS

What do you think of Dolores Claiborne? It has become one of my favorite Danny Elfman scores.

I've owned the short soundtrack for DOLORES CLAIBORNE since it came out in 1995.
Overall, I like Danny Elfman's soundtracks, but DOLORES CLAIBORNE has never been a favorite of mine.
I wouldn't deem it to be Top 5 material.

I think it's a superb score written mostly for strings. The kind of slightly dissonant, yet at the same time melancholic mood he conjures up. It makes up for at least 50% of the bleak atmosphere in that film.

I'm pretty sure 'The Postman' was in fact, 1997.

    1. Babe (Westlake)
    2. To Die For (Elfman)
    3. Batman Forever (Goldenthal)
    4. Toy Story (Newman)
    5. Dolores Claiborne (Elfman)

And since I bothered ranking them for myself, the rest of the scores from '05 that I'm familiar with...

    6. Twelve Monkeys (Buckmaster)
    7. Pocahontas (Menken)
    8. Braveheart (Horner)
    9. Sabrina (Williams)
    10. Nixon (Williams)
    11. Nick of Time (Rubenstein)
    12. Apollo 13 (Horner)
    13. Die Hard With A Vengeance (Kamen)
    14. Goldeneye (Serra)

EDIT - looking through your lists, it appears that I missed Crimson Tide and Bridges of Madison County. No bother - neither would change my top 5. Both would fall between 13 and 14 on my list.

I find it hilarious that, with more important things going on like DIE HARD selling out again and Family Dollar (of all places) carrying Varese goldmines, people can still get up in arms about lists of ten scores in threads where the (suggested) limit is five.

Methinks you're taking people whose comments aren't serious too seriously.
