The press release seems to imply that Disney now owns the STAR WARS franchise to do with what they want, period, meaning that perhaps a release of the "original" original films, pre-Lucas tinkering, could one day happen. That's how I read it, anyways. I couldn't care less though about the STAR WARS franchise at this point. I'm just shocked that Lucas actually sold it all off....

Has John Williams ever recorded any original music for a STAR WARS project that didn't involve George Lucas directly?

If Williams doesn't score the next Star Wars film score the obvious choice is Michael Giacchino.

Letting someone OTHER than Lucas write/direct Star Wars is a great idea, I'm all for it! He is a great storyteller, but an awful director. The true creative geniuses behind Star Wars were the folks at Lucasfilms.

It doesn't seem to be a joke.

I'm less interested in a new movie and more interested (now that Lucas is finally no longer in control) in a proper release of the original trilogy on a contemporary home format in HD quality rather than a dated, letterboxed 4:3 LaserDisc transfer.

Although without Lucas at the helm, I am interested to see where Star Wars can no go. No more inane space politics, I hope!

If this is true it's a ray of hope for the original trilogy. As much as I dislike Disney politics, I give them credit for preserving their films without tinkering with them.

However, how are they going to but out Fox???

It is, but Joel McNeely has found quite a lot of employment with the Disney company in the last few years...

And Giacchino isn't scoring Disney films? wink

Giacchino also worked closely with Williams on Star Tours for both Lucasfilm and Disney.

My hope is either Giacchino (particularly after his Star Tours music) or McNeely (I really like Shadows Of The Empire).

Just keep Bay, Bruckeheimer and other dude from Pirates Of The Caribbean away from Star Wars.

We don't live forever. He's got about 30 years to enjoy his $4.05 billion dollars.

I guess Giacchino had nothing to do with the DISNEY films like THE INCREDIBLES, SKY HIGH, RATATOUILLE, UP, CARS 2 OR JOHN CARTER?

Really? Not in my book. I vote Christopher Lennertz.

As I posted on my Facebook page, I would love it if this would open up the possibility of turning some of the Expanded Universe novels into films. Timothy Zahn's THRAWN trilogy is absolutely magnificent IMHO, and would make a great series of films.

If they can't re-cast it (as the novels feature Luke, Leia, Han Solo etc. just five years after Jedi, so actually having Hamill, Ford, Fisher etc appear would be impractical), I like the suggestion I read of them making a serious, realistic motion-capture animated film, and have the original cast come back and do the voices.

As for the music: Giacchino and Joel McNeely would appear to be front-runners based on their pedigree and history with the franchise, but I'd love for a young, hungry composer to be given a shot with this. Someone who actually grew up with Star Wars the same way many of us did, who were inspired by and love the scores, and who has the orchestral and thematic chops to cope.

Abel Korzeniowski? Douglas Pipes? James Peterson? Andrew Lockington? Jane Antonia Cornish? Maybe one of the spectacular young Spanish guys who have emerged over the last few years, like Oscar Araujo or Arnau Bataller. There's nothing written that says the composer has to be male, or American!

Yeah... that's Giacchino right there to a tee!

"Today will be a day long remembered!"

What possibilities?

But as was posted a couple of pages back - the most intriguing is what will Disney do with the music rights to the prequels and original trilogy? I hope Intrada can place a call to someone at Disney - a box set for next Christmas anyone?

As far as who will score, I hope Disney realise what a crucial part of Star Wars the music is. You can't have a Star Wars film without that music. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if they go in a different direction in the same way as Man of Steel. Not suggesting they get Zimmer but I wouldn't be surprised if they go with a Media Ventures composer. After all that is the sound of a lot of Disney films.

I would. Look at their properties. Disney properties are occasionally scored by Zimmer or one of his people, but by and large they tend to go with the likes of Newman, Giacchino, Menken, Howard, Elfman (with the exception of their Bruckheimer-inspired wannabe blockbusters).

Wow, surprise news about the buy-up. It should be interesting to see how this plays out.

I have no interest in speculating about possible STAR WARS films or composers or whatever at this point. What happens, happens.

Becuase it would be like Clone Wars, where they had a new composer and it was endlessly bashed.

Good point - but don't those composers tend to do animated films for Disney? Giacchino is the one on your list I think is the most likely. His score to Star Trek and John Carter were really good so he could 'fit' the Star Wars universe and has a proven track record with sci-fi and fantasy films. Sorry but I just can't imagine an Elfman or Newman score to Star Wars.

I also can't see this happening for 2015. For Disney to hit that date, they would have to start casting and pre production pretty quick - certainly early next year. Hadn't Disney promised that Tron 2 and the Black Hole would be in production by now so I will believe it when we see the first teaser with a date on it.

Thirded. Though I doubt Disney executive are scouring this board to see whom they should choose, but in case they are... HIRE GIACCHINO! (If Williams says no, that is. I'd only go after another composer if John Williams refused to come back).
