That's really beautiful! Just saw this again, for the 4th time, in a theatre a couple of weeks ago. It's still playing at this second-run movie theatre here in San Diego. This time that I saw it, it reminded me very strongly of LOST HORIZON, if only for the enlightenment he finds on Barsoom, and his yearning need to return there, which, though hinted, is not quite verified by film's end. I just love this movie, and I think Mr. Kitsch did the most of a challenging role, one which would have stymied many another leading man. John Carter is a physical man who must now finally face a lot of feelings he has long avoided, not to mention make weighted decisions about his connection this this alien land where he now finds himself... I can identify.

Yow, really? Not one out of fifteen? That really surprises me (and disappoints me a bit, but oh well). Not that I doubt you, but it's quite at odds with my own experience. Same here. Most people I know personally have seemed to like it just fine, some more than others, but overall enjoyed it. The only person I know who didn't like it was my mom, who said she found it hard to follow and a lot of the character names confusing. On the other hand, my dad quite enjoyed it. I've watched it several times on Blu-Ray already. Wish there had been more in the way of bonus features, as aside from the commentary (which I haven't listened to yet) I think I went through everything in less than an hour. Just on the fun factor alone, I can't see any other movie this year topping it for me.

I think its a bit naive to blame the films failure on disney.Sure, their advertising for the film wasnt the best but its quite posible the film would have failed anyway.I saw the film and wasnt that impressed. It's funny -- around boards like this, you get the impression that everybody who saw the film loved it. I know at least fifteen people who saw the movie (ages 12 to 50) and not one of them liked it. At all. Maybe I'd like it, I have no idea. But the notion that the film would have been a hit had Disney's marketing not punted is a real stretch for me. The marketing discussion was not only wobbly (I liked the trailers, I liked the main poster and I thought that awareness of the film was pretty high) but supposedly pointless - since the director was heavily involved in the marketing strategy. Was it a bad idea to turn "JOHN CARTER OF MARS" into "JOHN CARTER"? Yes. But the complete title wouldn´t have helped either. Because it was not the marketing that sank the movie. And it definitely wasn´t the movie itself that was the problem. It was the badmouthing of the press, IMO. Before anybody had seen the film journalists thrived on declaring it a desaster because production costs soared. This is something the press just LOVES. It happened before so many times. Sometimes, the films actually turn out to be not that good ("WATERWORLD") or at least flawed and overindulgent ("HEAVEN´S GATE"). But "JOHN CARTER", IMO, is simply a wonderful sci-fi/fantasy adventure that works on all levels. Of course, there are many who did not like it. Which movie is liked by everyone? None. However, this is not a movie which is incompetently made. You cannot deny the craft that went into every aspect of this film. And if some audiences did not like this film, it was probably due to the fact that "JOHN CARTER" did not offer something new. The cruel irony is that the source material actually did that - it offered everything that has been ripped off in the last three decades again and again, by movies that are universally loved and praised for being... yes, groundbreaking. IMO, it is a shame that something like "AVATAR" is the most successful film in history, when it only rips of "Dances with Wolves" and forced 3D on us. At the same time, a film with heart, imagination and integrity, like "JOHN CARTER" is considered a flop.

The font is "Albertus MT." Or as many of us call it, "the John Carpenter font." Great cover art, gentlemen. Anyone know why Amazon.com shows two different cover arts? I love the alternate one (the non-orange cover) but am unsure if it's officialm, a Euro-pressing, etc.

We have the red one over here too. Where are you guys seeing the alternate one? A quick scan through Amazon and I couldn't find it. If you click on this link, you'll see the alternate art as a choice to click on the thumbnail for: http://tinyurl.com/8aoxb9r
