The entire "controversy" is crap anyway...wasn't the whistler blower a disgruntled non-nominee who felt slighted?

Hell, the award is supposed to be about quality. So, if this gets nominated over popular darlings like Jay Z ... umm... doesn't that seem like something rational ? big grin

Then again, Eminem won an Oscar, so there goes any validity big grin

Eminem's song was integral to the plot of the film, as he's writing the song throughout the movie. Heads and shoulders above every other nominee that year (yes, even the Paul Simon and Goldenthal song).

No, there was a controversy about the song/film, almost from the minute the nomination was announced. All kinds of people writing on sites about how a film no one knew anything about could garner an award nomination. It actually got pretty vitriolic, some of these people very angry that their favorite stars (Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, etc.) could POSSIBLY lose out on a nomination (as if this category is owned by hit makers from the pop/rock world).

I don't give much credence as to how a lot of these categories are voted on, but especially this category. You may remember this is the same music branch that gave Oscars to Prince and Bob Dylan but didn't nominate ANY of the Bee Gees' great (now, classic) songs from Saturday Night Fever. I'm sorry if you don't agree, but that is messed up.

One odd little twist: Maestro Broughton noted in the email that 'Bill Ross did the score' for the film in question.

That would be William Ross. Isn't he the guy serving as music director at the Oscars this year? That could be interesting somewhere in the process...

Yeah, I agree with Shaun about the song from 8 MILE. I don't especially like the song myself, but it played a significant part in that movie and really packs a lot of dramatic wallop. That's the kind of nomination that's in the spirit of what the award means, and I'm all for that. I feel the same way about the song from HUSTLE & FLOW, and that very lovely one from ONCE. They all won, and all deserved to.

Quick poll... has anyone here actually seen the movie? How is the song in it?

I must say, I don't really care for it on its own.

I haven't seen the film as it only played in Encino (a Los Angeles county suburb) for one week in Autumn. Personally, I thought all the other songs up for nomination were pretty underwhelming and unmemorable (the only part of the "Frozen" song I remember is the "let it go" line). Speaking of Frozen, the one song in the movie I really liked is "In Summer," which I thought to be very catchy, effective in the film.

I wish we could take this poll after hearing the complete seventy-five song compilation...and I wouldn't be surprised if I actually picked Bruce's song out of the lot. At least his song actually has something to do with the film in which it appears.

We can all be hoppin' mad about the whole deal, but no amount of petitioning and letter-writing is going to make them change their minds again. They look ridiculous enough as it is.

FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY

I feel bad for Broughton but in all honesty, more people will have heard his song now than had it lost against the popular choice. Tells you plenty about this awards show when you have to ask people who get to vote to actually watch the movies that are up for an award, he wouldn't have sent that mail otherwise.

For the same reasons, all nominations of films produced by Harvey Weinstein, should have been disqualified. Sassy requests Mr. Weinstein to Academy members , asking them to take into account his movies are really outrageous . Nominations which won "Silver Linings Playbook " , thanks to the "good intentions" of Mr. Weinstein, is a good example , so that they were disqualified.

100% in agreement.

Wasn't Broughton's emailing Academy Members just an inexpensive way of Campaigning to be nominated? It's a FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION ad that just cost the time of doing the emails. I can sort of understand that he had access to all the Academy members, I suppose in the music section nominating committee, which everyone else who possibly wanted "their" song to be considered for a nomination, maybe didn't have access to. In in this way he sent out a very cost efficient "For your Consideration" request that others did not have access to doing and who would probably have done, if they did have access to the email addresses. Right or wrong? If anything this will stir the Academy to make rulings for situations like this in the future. He said he didn't "campaign", but just sent the For your Consideration emails. That sounds like campaigning to me. Just in email form, not Trade Paper Ad Pages. Maybe they should let it pass this time, but make a rule for not doing it next time unless everyone that wants their song nominated has access to all nominating committee emails. Just my thoughts and take on it.

I'm boycotting the Oscars over this. It's not even a very good night of television anyway. So no loss really.
