As you know, I'm a big fan of Italian sword-and-sandal (peplum) scores, and I was cataloging my CDs/LPs, and here's what I came up with. Do you know of other releases in this genre?
I know some of these (like Nascimbene's and some others') are more historical/biblical in nature, but since they were Italian composers writing this music back in the sixties when all the peplums were coming out, I included them. I'm leaving out more modern films like Donaggio's HERCULES and American films scored by non-Italians (like Les Baxter):
CICOGNINI: Ulysses
DE MASI: Toto Contro Maciste Il Figlio Dello Sceicco Solimano Il Conquistatore Maciste L'Eroe Piu Grande Del Mondo Maciste Nelle Miniere Del Re Salomone La Rivolta Delle Gladiatrici Seven Slaves Against Rome La Vendetta Di Spartacus
FUSCO: La Guerra Di Troia La Leggenda Di Enea
LAVAGNINO: Last Days Of Pompei Saffo Venere di Lesbo
LAVAGNINO/NICOLOSI: Ester E Il Re (Ester the King)
MARINUZZI: Hercules and the Captive Women
MASETTI: Hercules Hercules Unchained
NASCIMBENE: Alexander the Great Barrabas Constantine And The Cross Carthage En Flammes Solomon And Sheba Joseph And His Brethren The Vikings
NICOLOSI: The White Warrior Gli Invasori (Erik the Conqueror) Roma Contro Roma
ORTOLANI: Ursus Nella Valle Dei
PICCIONI: Duel Of The Titans (Romolo E Remo) Il Figlio Di Spartacus
RUSTICELLI: Arrivano I Titani The Thief Of Bagdad
SAVINA: Ursus Nella Terra Di Fuoco
TROVAJOLI: Hercules in the Haunted World (Ercole al Centro Della Terra)
USUELLI: Saul E David
VLAD: Ursus
And to go off-topic on a topic that was already off-topic, do you know anything about the CD called: "A Symphonic Tribute To Alberto Sordi?" I have never seen it listed or sold anywhere, and it apparently contains some otherwise-unavailable Lavagnino music. Here's one of only two places I've ever seen it mentioned on the web:
Yes, I saw the review earlier today, and although the reviewer loved THE BLOB, he apparently thought it was a re-recording, despite our prominent PR material as well as other things. If we did re-record it, then we did a lousy job because we re-recorded it in mono!
Still, I'm very happy the reviewer liked our CD so much -- that's always good news -- especially on a rainy southern California day like today.
There is a bit of THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA score available on the Monstrous Music Album THE BLOB (MMM-1955). The Ralph Carmichael score is filled out with 25 tracks amounting to 38:50 min from the Valentino Production Library. The Valentino Production Library is credited in the Main Titles of LOST SKELETON and individual composers are credited in the End Titles
Track 52. Whimsical Tale (3:03), is the squirrel scene about 6:50 into the movie. Composed by Roger Roger (1911-1995).
Track 38. Nocturnal Adventure (1:45), occurs about 10:50 into the movie as Betty Armstrong expresses her vague, undefined unease. "Something I can't touch or feel..." This is repeated at about 42:33 as the Skeleton and Kro-Bar attempt to obtain the meteor by controlling Betty using mind-power. Composed by Roger Roger.
Track 30. Spell of the Unknown (1:28), occurs about 17:14 as Dr Roger Fleming meets the skeleton. "All skeletons are against me." Composed by Roger Roger.
If anyone orders one of our CDs and mentioned "The Blob" in their order, we'll throw in a second CD at 50% off! (if you pay by Paypal, you'll get a Paypal refund of that 50% off!)
On a tangent, I was playing the licensing library cues on MMM, and recognized the 29 tracks under POWERFUL ACTION-ADVENTURE are the soundtrack for LOS MARCADOS (Sawtell and Shefter). The track links say "MARC" so I guess it's no secret to David. Would have made a good retail release. http://www.mmmrecordings.com/Licensing/Track_Descriptions/track_descriptions.html
One of the tracks strikes me as being based on a famous piece of music. I'm sure I've heard it elsewhere, and would be surprised if it originated with that forgotten film. What is it? http://www.mmmrecordings.com/Audio_Samples/2000-MARC-29.mp3
David, this may be delving back into ancient history for you, but do you recall if there were other Mario Nascimbene tracks in the Valentino catalogue? As previously mentioned tr.51 "Gateway To Glory", is the Main Title to the BLACK LANCERS. The recent Quartet FILM MUSIC OF MARIO NASCIMBENE released what was available but I'm wondering if there may have been additional Nascimbene tracks that are some of the lost LANCER cues. Do you remember all the way back to 2007 ?
