From the samples, sounds to me like Howard has done a great job, as expected. I was initially disappointed that Powell wasn't retained as he has scored this series so expertly, but if anyone else has to have a go at it I'm very pleased that it's James Newton Howard, a wonderful composer who is having, as others have noted, a very good year.
On a first listen, I don't like this version. Too many layers on top of each other. Maybe I'll get accustomed to it, but right now the new layers don't make much sense to me. I hope they represent stuff from the score, making this a proper old-fashioned end title song
This just became available to download through iTunes so I grabbed it. I'm only about 20mins it but so far I think it's absolute garbage. And I really liked the Powell scores (and Salt for that matter)...
In fact I am getting used to Moby/JNH's new version of Extreme Ways. It has gotten quite a lot of play here today and I am looking forward to the full album hopefully arriving in the mail tomorrow morning.
I just wished the funky bits in the final minute would have been more prominent earlier into it.
Like the score. It's not as thematic and melodic like Powell's scores, but It keeps a sense of continuity and I love that JNH makes references to some sounds and themes from the Bourne trilogy, but keeping it on his own (love when he uses the ethnic flute from Hunger Games, and some of the percussion from Salt in some cues).
Also, ain't funny that the recent films with JNH's scores has songs which he collaborated or used themes from others (like Arcade Fire's Horn Of Plenty, Florence + The Machine's Breath Of Life, and now Extreme Ways's Moby).
I thought Colosseum was a sister company of Varese? Why would the US date have been delayed when Europe's stayed on track? Ah well, you lucky bastard.
I'm playing the disc on my CD player right now.
However, it seems the CD master has a little error. I'm now at track 11 and so far all tracks have a gap of 2 seconds in between them. Unfortunately this results in an audible rupture at the end of track 04 – apparently 04 should flow seamlessly into 05.
If someone has bought the album download, I would be grateful if you let me know its total time. The CD album runs 64:24.

Total time of iTunes download is 63:16. I listened to the ends of the tracks you mentioned but heard no problem.
Thank you. I emailed Colosseum in the meantime and they replied that they have forwarded the issue to Varèse. Until this is rectified, I'd recommend to NOT order the CD release.
JNH is one of the few composers who works regularly that I enjoy most everything they do. I really enjoy SALT. I know they are samples, but I was not impressed with what I heard for Bourne Legacy. That coupled with the post about the CD error has convinced me to cancel my order. I am ready to hear what Brian Tyler comes up with for Expendables II.
"Judging from the iTunes samples... It´s time that Howard works with Shyamalan again so he is allowed to do a great score." -------------------------- A bit harsh, me thinks! Have you heard WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (the FYC promo), HUNGER GAMES and (especially) SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN?? All are good to great recent scores by JNH, some recalling his high-water mark scoring for Shamalamadingdong.
