Pity about the second b.o. weekend - although the film did drop as most big blockbusters do.

But b.o. numbers should never dictate whether one likes a film or even wants to go see it.

Well, Powell´s work still is one of my favorite and most entertaining scores, and I am grateful that SOLO was made so this music can exist.

I'll wait until streaming before seeing the film. I'm somewhat curious, though I hate with a passion these smart @ss annoying side-kick robots. Both in Rogue One and Now Solo.

I'm up for another Powell Star Wars score but really want to see McNeely loose on one of these films.

Haven't seen the movie yet, plan to next week. But man, this album keeps getting better and better, the more I listen. That doesn't happen too frequently for me with new soundtracks anymore, always fun when it does!

Agreed. A lot of nice music choices with terrific colorful orchestrations and heroic passages. I like Powell's variations on JW material. Shows a very smart composer.

The recording really is stellar too. It's been a while since I heard such a great sound to a film score. Shapiro's Captain Underpants also sounded great (also recording in London). No disrespect to the wonderful musicians in LA but there is something about the halls in the UK that just have so much character.

Now I know hindsight is a wonderful thing and allegedly, the suits think this films' b.o. failure may be down to opening only 5 months after the VERY divisive LAST JEDI and within 5 and 2 weeks, respectively, of those other juggernauts AVENGERS INFINITY WAR & DEADPOOL. Plus the small window it allowed for trailers and advertising.
BUT (and bare in mind I thoroughly enjoyed Ron Howard's SOLO), I wonder if Lucasfilm had allowed Miller & Lord to plough their own furrow, regardless of the producers' script rules and limitations, and delivered a THOR RAGNAROK or IRON MAN 3, instead of a safe, vanilla THOR 2 or IRON MAN 2, the box office would have been any different?
Just throwing it out there. We will never know for sure.
Of course, we may not have gotten this stellar score we have now, but some wacky Mark Mothersbaugh effort that sounded like Meco wink

The deck was stacked against the movie, the troubled production, the bad taste left by the recent Last Jedi, and opening after 2 major blockbusters ( although usually that's not an issue for Star Wars ). Solo , for me, was tremendous fun, a heck of a lot more entertaining than Rogue One, Last Jedi or Force Awakens. Ron Howard came in to an unfortunate situation and made a movie that feels pretty smooth and assured. It's a shame this movie isn't doing better. It deserves better.

And Powell's score is a knockout. It's my favorite of the year , sounds like Star Wars and keeps Powell's style. I'm not saying it's a better score than Williams' last 2 SW efforts, but I'm listening to it a lot more than those razz

What strange times we live in when a movie grossing a quarter of a billion dollars in two weeks internationally is considered a huge bomb.

It's because, again, people are comparing cost to raw income, not net income: 250 mil$ is the price of the ticket as paid by the moviegoer. Only half of that goes to the producer (actually 50% in US, 40% rest of the word & 25% China ). So "Solo" has only ~120 m in the bank, and costs 250 mil + marketing (easily 100 mil). Easy to see that the movie will loose money on its theatrical run.

Which is a shame because it was quite entertaining and this will probably rob us of a Powell sequel score.

In France, the first week made only a third of Rogue One and a sixth of Last Jedi! I know some people decided to turn their back on Star Wars after TLJ but still.

People mentioned lots of arguments as to why (May release -> it's Star Wars!, Troubled production -> who knows/cares?, SW fatigue -> Marvel is doing fine) but it probably comes down to three things:

1. No one asked for a Solo prequel movie. Prequels are boring. People continue to show up for Marvel movies because, among other things, they are going forward.
2. "The last Jedi" was hugely divisive and certainly didn't help (although to be fair, Ep I and II weren't well received either) and let's face it: there hasn't been a recent SW movie with a great story, and this one didn't look like an exception because of 1) and thus it needed to be pushed: the marketing was shockingly late/non existent.
3. Star Wars without Jedis/Force/lightsabers is not Star Wars - which is why the only prequel people still want is a Kenobi movie - I mean Boba Fett really?

As stated by Powell, he was hired during the Lord/Miller days (with Williams always part of the equation).

"Lando's Closet" gives me the chills every time, what a track. We need a concert version of this. And of L3/Mine Mission theme too.

It's because they took all the guns out of the characters hands in the international posters. wink

Those are the most Williams like, really dead on classical scoring. Beautiful stuff.

I agree.

Aside from the patta patta drums tracks that I find annoying, there are some very exciting tracks on this CD. My standouts are the two tracks that feature a strong chorus (shades of Ghost in the Shell) - Marauders Arrive and Savareen Stand-Off.

As another commentator mentioned, I think Powell's orchestral scoring opens up the further in the score you go.

It makes sense for "Reminiscence Therapy" to loaded with many callbacks considering that the Kessel Run represents one of those "tougher scrapes than this" moments of his life.

I keep hoping that somehow the movie will find its audience. It's quite good, and like others have said I feel it deserves better attendance than it has received so far.

I absolutely adore Powell's Chewbacca theme.
From it's light, textbook Powell intro, in a HTTYD style, at the end of Flying With Chewie, to the tragi-romantic rendition at the beginning of Train Heist, under the campfire scene. It's such a catchy and adaptable melody.
It gets all triumphant and heroic, for the wookie rebellion in Break Out and bouncy and joyful, as Chewie takes over the hot seat of the Falcon, in Reminiscence Therapy.
What a fine addition to a series stuffed full of magical themes.
Bravo Sir.

I just got home from seeing the movie, which I enjoyed.

Just shows you – two things taken as a given a month ago turned out to be exactly wrong: That Alden Ehrenreich was miscast (I thought he was great!) and that the film would make a mint regardless (guess not).

Having seen him in HAIL CAESAR I thought he was well cast

He was great in "Hail Caesar!" It was for that reason that I had faith, but the consensus on the internet (which, of course, is always right) was that he was going to tank it.

Mine Mission is such an excellent cue. Certainly some of the best music I’ve ever heard from Powell. He absolutely nailed that scene. I got a real kick from watching that “gonk” robot go berserk. That moment got a big laugh from the audience.

Yeah, I love that track too.

I'm bummed that it looks like we won't be seeing him as Han again.

Not necessarily. He could always pop up in the Kenobi or Bobafett movies.
