People who download scores would never buy the score to begin with, (their just into free stuff) or wouldn't have the income to buy the scores anyway. (Such as the expensive multi disc sets).

Disagree about this one! Back in 2011 (it was probably autumn or so), I downloaded Gizzi's Blood for Dracula/Flesh for Frankenstein (Digitmovies version - I simply had no information that this CD existed at all!!!). After first listening I bought the actual CD, now it's among other jewels in my collection!
And (forgive me for this) this happens often to me - sometime our labels choose not good tracks (for my taste) for samples, sometime (it happens with Italian scores) - there is no samples at all! But if I download something and find that I like it, I buy it. In 99% I'm lucky and my collection grows up smile
Last example - The Setting Sun. Too much drums according to samples. Fantastic album in whole form, so it's in my collection now and I already listen it 3 or 4 time in last 2 weeks.

You just proved my point. If you intend to buy you will. Let me rephrase, those that regular download instead of purchasing scores, wouldn't buy them either way.

Yes, this sounds more correct smile

You may choose to believe this, but it's nonsense.

I'll fully grant you that the major labels, when complaining about piracy, count every illegal download as a lost sale. This is also nonsense, for the reasons you state.

But you've created an equally false premise, that people who download from sharing sites "would never" buy even if the free alternative were not available to them. I know this to be false because I know these people, and in fact some post in this very forum (though most have been shamed into shutting up about it). What percentage is this? I have no idea. But score CDs sell poorly in the first place, so even a relatively small number of people who steal instead of buy can make an actual difference.

In our little echo chamber, we can easily convince ourselves of many things, including that all film score fans are collectors who hate downloads and streaming and Hans Zimmer. None of these things is actually true.

As for those of you who are bemoaning that this thread is barely about "The Monkey King 2," I'm finally starting to agree with you!

I think if anything regular downloaders eventually become regular purchasers. After all, once they learn to distinguish between quality of releases they tend to value the more interesting releases and purchase those. Sometimes this can mean downloading an out of print score and buying a future re-issue of it with better sound quality because they recognize the efforts that went into it. Sure some people out there are never going to buy anything but often times realizing something would not be available at all if it wasn't for a small label motivates someone to buy that release if they enjoy it.

Holy crap, somehow I missed the first Monkey King score, and I'm definitely going back to listen to it after finding this gem!

It's even better than the sequel. You'll love it!

You really need to start following such sites at Movie Music UK, Movie Wave, Filmtracks... hell, listen to my radio show once in a while. All of us were promoting (and praising) the HELL out of this score a YEAR before Intrada released it.

And all of those sites continue to praise and review scores that most have never heard before.

Bookmark the sites and check'em out regularly.

I've been following those sites for at least a decade, but I was kind of deployed to Afghanistan when it came out... razz

I have to say I was initially very disappointed with this release. It just doesn't grab me thematically like the first score did. It's slowly growing on me over time, but I think it's a very different kind of score.

It definitely is, but I absolutely love it. Chris Young's funky voice work is really enjoyable. I find it to be a much darker score overall with hints of mystery and brooding themes. It really works with the film if you haven't seen it. It's actually pretty good, miles ahead of the first. You can really see where Toriyama got his Dragonball inspiration.

"The Sand Monk" to me opens with what sounds like a frog or bullfrog ribbitting - I do like the sound and how it's used throughout the track.

My dog however, much prefers the first score - the Tamborine/bells used somewhat often sound to him like there's a dog walking by outside.

That really puts it into focus. I was expecting something similar to the first film/score and apparently it's quite different. I'm sure he wrote an appropriate score and this explains why it's growing on me, now that I've modified my expectations.

I prefer MK2 to the original, personally. I find it to be emotionally richer and more mature. The first is a little more epic and extroverted, though, so I can understand a preference for either.

Hilariously enough, I just opened a package this morning with the Monkey 2 soundtrack inside. Because over the weekend I found 1 and 2 on Netflix, and immediately started watching 1 again, and looking forward to 2.

These are crazy movies, and people can say whatever they feel about the quality of the effects, but I think the first movie is an absolute delight, and no reason to think the second will be any different (or the third). After reading excerpts of the Journey to the West over the years (which this is adapted from, and surprisingly closely given that it's hundreds of years old), I actually started trekking through the whole 10 volume epic (or whatever it is).

And Young's music is some of the most fun I've heard in movies in many a year.

Very much looking forward to 3 when it comes out.

Tracklists on the Back side of the CD and on Intrada's website do not really seem to match up:
http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.10316/.f

As I'm neither familiar with Chinese nor the film, can anybody please be so kind and shed some light on this matter?
