I once ordered some CD scores direct from the record label, that offered legit download codes with them. It was going to cost too much to send the Discs to the UK, so the label offered to send me the download code when ordered, and they just had to destroy the CDs themselves. Obviously that’s a pretty crappy situation, and I’d have rather have had the CDs too. But with this method I could afford an extra album in that batch. Nuts, ey? I hope the industry does change soon, so the labels can put out digital as well as CD, but it seems clear that for the most part, their hands are tied.

I like looking at statistics, and BuzzAngle has the first full report on 2017 US music sales. Key facts: 75 million CDs were sold in 2017 (down from 82 million the year before). Vinyl sold nearly 9 million units.

"In the U.S., there was a significant increase in overall consumption, an outstanding 12.8% over 2016 that marks the third year in a row with increasing growth. Audio stream consumption continued its explosive expansion with a 50.3% increase to 377B streams, an amazing 127B more streams than in 2016. Subscription streams are now at an impressive 80% of total audio streams, up from 76% in 2016. Both album sales and song sales continued to decline, 14.6% and 23.2% respectively, but physical sales declined only 7%, while vinyl sales continued its impressive growth with an increase of 20.1% over 2016 and now comprises 10.4% of all physical album sales."

I agree with other posters, if someone prefers digital downloads good for them, they are not hurting me. I still prefer CDs and will buy them as long as they are offered.

Okay, joan, I'll join you in the boomer game. My last new & current car is a 2012 with a CD player. Up to this time I had had a cassette player in one way or another. No more. For six years I have a pile of cassettes, some of which remain beloved homemade primitive compilations, just sitting around unheard and gathering dust. I think of them sometimes when I hear a piece on the radio or wherever and the next song is never the one(s) on the cassette. Ruins my listening day. Severe creature of habit, that sort of thing. roll eyes

Well, at least I have CDs and even a thumb drive (jeepers is that what they call them?) or two (me?) that I manage to partake of. But man, I miss those painstakingly compiled little cassette programs. Who the heck has the time and resources to recreate them on the latest gizmos when they'll just go obsolete in another couple of years anyway?!

Don't forget the other benefit that is often available with downloads... that of buying selective tracks. For example, if buying a download of Korngold's Violin Concerto from a release that also includes another unwanted concerto by another composer, you can buy just the three Korngold concerto tracks, saving even more money over the cost of the CD.

I recently bought three lossless downloads of recordings of that piece by different violinists (nine tracks in all) and in total they cost me less than if I had bought any one of the CDs, and with no loss in sound quality.

joan, have fun with your new vehicle but it stinks that it doesn't have a cd player. You probably don't want to go through the trouble, but you can have an aftermarket unit installed. We did this for my son when his car didn't come equipped with one.

If you do it, we can all picture you driving down the highway, windows open, hair blowing in the breeze and singing at the top of your lungs. Who cares if the music doesn't have words?

If I play my cds in the car, I burn a copy and play it. The model I drive has a reputation for eating cds.

I had some salty language for the person advocating for digital downloads.

Why have only digital when you can have both by ripping physical media into lossless digital formats?

FSMers, I appreciate the sympathy and advice. Howard, I remember I owed a car that had BOTH a cassette and CD player which was wonderful. No more.

Edw, I did call the dealership to see if Kia made an "installable" CD player, and they said no. Not sure what an "after market" player is, but I'll check it out.

Complaining about a lack of digital releases is so 2012

Here's the deal and why this isn't obvious I don't know:

Let's say streaming and downloads finally kills off the CD. Wait ten years and what do you think will happen? CDs, like vinyl, will become hip again and everyone will want them, buy them used, companies will go back to making them, they will be pricier and history, as always, will repeat itself.

Is it just me or is our annual CDs-versus-downloads debate more cordial this year?

This comparison would only make sense if there were some newer form of listening to music that was 100% clearer, crisper, and better in every way than CDs, yet the hipsters still snatched up lucratively priced, retro-cool CDs anyway.

The only advantage digital has over CDs is physical storage. There is absolutely no other advantage. The disadvantages on the other hand...

Then we have to assume you haven't heard a hi-res download versus the same recording on CD.

What if I told you CDs are digital? (Enter Morpheus).

Although it's 2018 I still have the following:

- CD player in the car (no aux in, no bluetooth)
- The good stereo on the house is CD-only
- The kids can't handle MP3 but the nice Frozen and Moana CDs are handy and very welcome and we sometimes peel out the booklet and sing the lyrics along

I maybe bought 10-15 soundtracks digitally over the last couple of years and the same thing always happens: I forget about them! Since I don't burn them on CD (and those that I did burn get also lost because they look rubbish and I won't put them along with my nice collection of real CDs.) I only keep them on some harddrive and inevitable they get lost.

So +1 for the real stuff from me. (btw: born in '82, maybe it's an age thing)

oh my we've been hearing this "cd's are dead" nonsense for years...formats came and went (SACD, DVD-A)...digital formats usually are abandones by real music lovers when the understand the shortcomings (limited reportoire, crappy lossy formats, even the latest fad MQA is awful)..and the old little PCM cd is still alive and kicking.......yes , "immaterial" is the direction, but it's the future, not the present..so while you listen to encrypted, compressed crap..cd's are cheaper than ever!

Kinda surprised that in 2018 (current year argument) people are surprised at cars without CD players. In /2010/ when I was shopping for a car they were already not offered in some of the ones I looked at.

Well if you haven't purchased a new car in 10 years how would you know? wink But yeah your right, I remember hearing car manufacturers were going to phase out the CD player a long long time ago. It wasn't that much of a secret.

Dear Lukas Kendall...

It is time to move FSM into the year 2018., and beyond.

This place is so outdated.

My main issue is....I don’t buy CDs anymore...can we not have two version...The very old way..cds for sale..cds..ain’t that a 1980’s deal.

The bright new future is digital downloads...ie Apple, Google and Amazon.

Mr. Kendall..and La La Land and others who produce 3000 cds can u not start offering Digital Downloads...I am not buying anymore CD’s...takes up too much space...

Please!!!

Thanks

Fuck dowloading and YOUR bright new future. CD's and LP's only freak.
