Hey for you oldie Anime freaks. I was curious to see what Kinuko Oomori had done other than Bubblegum Crisis... And apparently it's nothing?! She had such a gawd damn sexy voice! I thought she was a huge Japanese star.

You've just reminded me that I still haven't gotten around to watching my Bubblegum Crisis Blu-ray. I'll have to do something about that once I finally finish up Ranma 1/2.

Looking at your original post I noticed Chumei Watanabe's score to Dangaioh listed, which makes me wonder if you've picked up last year's two-disc release of his score to Robot King Daioja. If not, I highly recommend it. The first half of disc two in particular, which consists of the Space Fantasy Diogia LP, is possibly the single best thing I've ever heard from him.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00ORAY136/

There was also a sequel to Dangaioh called Great Dangaioh, which was scored by Chumei's son Toshiyuki Watanabe. His phenomenal Space Brothers score has already been mentioned above, but if you're looking for a bit more orchestal mecha music, you might also want to check out his score to Majestic Prince.

Great Dangaioh

Majestic Prince

And one name that seems conspicuously absent from this thread is Yuji Ohno. His jazzy scores for Lupin the Third were probably some of the best anime scores of the 70s, and his score for the new fourth series is just as delightful.

Off topic....I wonder if the BR for season 7 has the littler feature where they interview some fans....including me. big grin

Incidentally on topic, Ranma has some great music, if you like silly-cacthy stuff. I once read an interview with Kenji Kawai who mentioned how he forgot a lot of it because all his composing kind of just ran together.

@ Squiddybop-

Ive been away from the anime scene for well over 15 years. I had no idea Bubblegum Crisis was released on Blu Ray. I see it’s very expensive now. I would love to see Project AKO in HD but I think I read somewhere the masters are lost or theres some technical issue why it will never get the HD treatment. Likewise I was not aware of “Great Dangaioh”. Thanks for the suggests!

@ TerraEpon -I remember enjoying some of the music in Ranma 1/2 including some of the OVA movies. There was one on a beach I liked. I'll have to check them out.

AnimEigo did a Kickstarter to fund the Bubblegum Crisis Blu-ray set, but they do still offer copies for non-backers here:

http://www.animeigo.com/products/anime/bubblegum-crisis

They also did a Kickstarter for a Blu-ray of Otaku no Video, which should be coming out pretty soon. They even commissioned new artwork by Kenichi Sonoda for it.

I don't have any Ranma 1/2 CDs yet, but I've definitely been enjoying the score while watching the show. I think a lot of my favorite cues are the ones composed by Hideharu Mori, but there are also a few very nice cues that I'm sure were composed by Kawai.

I don't think anybody mentioned Masamichi Amano's Super Atragon..it's my absolute favorite.
A beautifully composed, fully orchestral-choral score on the grandest scale, and the Main Title march (which reminds me a bit of Alan Silvestri's Judge Dredd) is one of the most stirring I know.

Sounds like something I would be interested in. I'll check it out on YT. Thxs!

Super Atragon is definitely a score any fan of Giant Robo will want to pick up. I'm also a huge fan of Amano's score to The Aurora. The climatic track of that album is a nine minute whopper of a cue that floors me every time I hear it. Unfortunately both of those scores are among the harder to find Amano Cds nowadays.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00005HKJH/

And here's another recommendation for fans of Giant Robo. There is currently a seller on ebay offering a sealed copy of one of the soundtracks for the Gin Rei Special OVAs.

I'm not sure where they managed to find more than one sealed copy of this score, but I purchased one from this seller a few months ago and it was definitely the real deal. The music is not as bombastic as Amano's work on Giant Robo, but it's a gorgeous score. I managed to get my copy for a mere ten bucks, but even at the twenty-five dollars they are asking now I think it's a heck of a deal.

One more Amano album that might be worth checking out is his score to Ninja Resurrection. This is one that I seem to remember a few people not really caring for, but I rather enjoy it. It features a bit more electronics than his Giant Robo scores, but it's still got that great Warsaw Philharmonic sound, and you can get it dirt cheap at Right Stuf.

Thanks for these recommendations. I love love LOVE Amano's SUPER ATRAGON, GIANT ROBO scores, PRINCESS NINE (just fantastic stuff), LEGEND OF THE BLUE WOLF... Even though he borrows as much as Horner, he really has damn, damn good symphonic chops and can write *incredibly* stirring action music full of that "dance-like" lyricism we rarely hear in Western action scores.

Yeah, I really wish he would get more scoring assignments, though at lest he does seem to be keeping busy doing orchestrations for Shiro Sagisu. You can definitely hear Amano's influence in the scores to Berserk: The Golden Age Arc, Magi, Black Bullet and the live action version of Attack on Titan, and I'm really looking forward to hearing what they come up with for Godzilla Resurgence.

You'd think BATTLE ROYALE would have catapulted Amano's career, alas, no dice.

Why is it that composers from France, Italy, Spain, etc. regularly get scooped up by "Hollywood" but never Asian composers?

Sakamoto and Dun don't count since they were introduced to the west by, well, western filmmakers on western-financed movies...

It definitely doesn't happen often, but there are a few examples that come to mind.

Heaven and Earth by Kitaro

Rising Sun by Toru Takemitsu

Both The Bible and Reflections in a Golden Eye by Toshiro Mayuzumi

While none of those assignments led to a lasting Hollywood career, we at least got a few excellent scores out of it.

And to bring this back around to anime (even though I'm a few years late mentioning it) I should point out that Koichi Sugiyama's score to Space Runaway Ideon is actually available in a very nice four-disc set from King Records.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B002E1HL0K/

A number of the tracks are even orchestrated by Reijiro Koroku, so this score actually features two 80s era Godzilla composers working together.

I suppose. Still, strange that it hasn't happened in so long...

Love Amano's Giant Robo series. I have all but two of the CD’s. And they were incredibly hard to hunt down even ten years ago! Sampling Space Runaway Ideon on YT and like what I’m hearing. Gall Force is cool too. I remember liking the Dirty Pair OVA soundtracks when I watched them. Gotta check them out. Lots of great suggestions.

Edit:

Don't know how I forgot to add Moldiver. (I still have my VHS tapes!) Short lived superhero spoof which had a lot of great music.

Just realized this sounds like Outlanders. Is it the same composer?

Then there's Phantom Quest Corp. Groovy music.

Anyone know what the "Galaxy Express 999 Eternal Editions" represent as far as music in the series?
I know No1&2 Editions are the score from the film "Galaxy Express 999". What do the editions, 3&4,5&6,7&8 represent? I'm going to take a wild guess, "Adieu Galaxy Express 999" and perhaps the television soundtrack?

Perhaps the greatest artistic score for anime (I even had contacted the composer in case his score will be released in sheet music, something I haven't done for any other anime score):

ANGEL'S EGG

(listen to track 4 first for a full orchestra + chorus rendition of the main theme - see details of video to go directly to the track)

Also another great one, is the score for the first story of MEMORIES (incorporating music from Madame Butterfly in some cues) (Oh, I see it was mentioned in 2nd post already, and that someone may have been me):

This sounded quite original to me instrumentally, with the choir and saxophone!
