Well I am just suggesting that timing wise there should be a clear guide if that is the intent of the re-recording to re-create the original but with clarity. Anyone is certainly open to do a re-interpretation of a classic score just as any other classical music but I think to some extent it is nice when the re-recording is done and largely provides a clearer version of the original music without too much in the way of re-interpretation.

I personally can't wait for the re-recording/reinterpretation of the complete scores for Star Wars, Jaws, ET, and Superman! Cause I know Williams can do better and I always thought the originals were lacking. ;-)

We've gotten a re-recording of Jaws.

And I prefer some of Kojian's Star Wars cues to the originals.

Williams has re-recorded parts of all those scores several times and none of them sound exactly alike.
Perhaps next time he has a concert, he should just conduct to the sound of the CD playing, so everything is identical and the dimwitted are satisfied.

One shouldn't be expecting the new performance to match the original, nor dismiss the "re-interpretation" just because it's different. The producers were quite upfront about the fact that it wouldn't sound like the original recording; that was in fact the point of this new disc. The purpose of the recording was to present the music in a manner closer to how Poledouris had expressed his original intent to have been rather than the performance that he got for the film.

I have to say that the more I listen to this version, the more I like it (which is saying something considering my enthusiastic initial reaction). It in no way supplants my Milan or Varèse editions of the score, but I wasn't expecting that of it. It does, however, stand proudly next to them as a great performance of one of my favorite scores.

If I have room in my collection for multiple recordings of El Cid, Mysterious Island, Zulu, E.T., The Adventures of Robin Hood, King Kong, Psycho, The Sea Hawk and many others that I enjoy for different reasons, I see no reason why I can't make a little extra room for Conan the Barbarian.

Fair enough. I have several versions of his scores, Pop's CD's and heard him in concert. Ive never heard a great deviation from the original spirit of his original works. So I guess its a matter of nuance and how far one deviates from the source material. I would have to say John William's is really good at it.

I've barely any words for this recording other than to say I'll likely enjoy listening to it for quite a few more years.
Despite some occasional...loaded soundscape in the very loud parts, I can't say I have any complaints about the actual performance on the disk, and would gladly welcome other new recordings of other ancient film soundtracks.

Sir, for these pictures, you are most certainly the man! Have the internet on me big grin !

I just ordered this yesterday along with LaLa's Star Trek V release. Was slightly worried about the fact sample tracks sounded weird until it dawned on me that I'm used to hearing the original tracks as they were recorded in 1982 and was unused to hearing them played fresh.

Conan I:

I'm curious... why four smiley faces for the Varese CD, and five for the LP?

Does the LP sound better?

ops! you're right.... let's say 5 for both
well, the LP is priceless... wonderful rear cover art

If the LP's back cover art is the same as the Varese back cover art, then yes, I agree. Wish I knew who painted that...

I think this might the go-to performance of Conan for me--I particularly prefer the choral performances in the rerecording to the original. The film performance of "Anvil of Crom" is still the definitive version but I really enjoy the extra detail (and extra music) of the Prometheus release.

Mr. Bond...

You want to know what I think about your post?

By the way, I'm not sure if anyone's posted these yet, but here's high-res scans I made for both of the front cover artwork pieces:

Which tracks are contained on that one?
Been looking all over for a list of tracks, but so far nothing seems to give.
Is it identical to the Varèse edition, perhaps, or is it the same selection as the Milan CD?

Re: MCA Original Soundtrack LP

This is the track list as posted at Soundtrack Collector:

Track listing

1. Anvil of Crom (02:30)
2. Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom (05:31)
3. Gift of Fury (03:47)
4. Wheel of Pain (04:05)
5. Atlantean Sword (03:53)
6. Theology/Civilization (03:10)
7. Wifeing (02:07) (Theme of Love from "Conan The Barbarian")
8. The Search (03:05)
9. The Orgy (04:10) composed by Basil and Zoe Poledouris
10. Funeral Pyre (04:28)
11. Battle of The Mounds (04:48)
12. Orphans of Doom/The Awakening (05:28)

Total Duration: 00:47:02

It is much shorter than the expanded Varese CD edition.

P.S. It has been a while since I gave the lp a spin as I usually listened to the expanded Varese CD so I can't comment on sound quality comparisons between the two.
