This box has so many great sets that I thought we all have been pining for -
Just like that, we get a complete King of the Khyber Rifles, Man in the Grey Flannel Suit,
Hatful of Rain, Tender is the Night ( favorite score from a very bad film), Prince of Players and more.

any minor regrets - only one- Five Fingers included some french songs usually played on a record player, one song of which is important to the plot - Adieu Mon Coeur (sp).

Would love to have that song free of dialogue. Anopther french song became the Main title theme of Desiree !!!

Does anyone who worked on this project know the name of the vocalist who sang the songs?
Shipping says end of the month. I guess this will not be in time for Christmas?

Joe, is there any way to figure out that issue of the finale of "Tender is the Night" from the timings on the new set.? I didn't have time this AM to pull the older Varese release to try and compare timings, etc.

I wonder how they improved the sound on REEF. Same source, new technology, or a new source?

Such a stunning release and I have to give credit to you guys on here. It's nice that the majority of comments are positive which is a welcome change!! I'm not getting this quite yet, but I plan to. I'll have to keep an eye on it and see if the quantity get's too low before I make the plunge.

I bet the book is quite fascinating, great job Varese!!

It's $14.28 per disc or $11.11 per score. Given that as a single disc these would be $20 each, this is a great value.

If they had an installment plan, like Time-Life, I'd be on this like stink on feces. Maybe I can sell something. Like a kidney or something.

Kidding aside, it's a good value and a great release. Hoping I can scrounge up the moolah in time.

I keep hearing the same thing - "I already own these." No, you don't.

Err, yes I do.

I might not have the latest remastered versions, but I most certainly do have most of the scores on this set.

I very often will upgrade a score if it's more complete and better sounding, but not always. It's bordering on obsessive-compulsive to keep buying the same scores again and again on the promise that each new edition sounds slightly better than the last. And, yes, sometimes I am guilty. But not always.

Now, *I* did not complain about this release. Nor did I complain about the price. I think it's a very, very nice box set indeed and very well worth the money if you choose to buy it. I have no doubt it does sound better than previous releases of the same stuff, too, and I'm very happy it came out.

But, sorry, *your* comment riled me.

Cheers

While a monumental release, about half has appeared before on Varese. Which makes this another frustrating buy for those who picked up those earlier releases.

Yes, Varese did everything right this time, or just about anyway. And even with the high price tag, at least they announced it early on that it would be a "whopper." So, they did give us time.

A lot of money presumably went into this set and it just cannot be issued at a mere $50.00. I really do regret to hear of how many people may want it and just can't afford it, but, on the opposite end, for those who just suggest that Varese may be intentionally cruel with their timing or for including previously-released material, it's just a bit short-sighted in my opinion. Youre getting a bunch of remastered versions and brand-new material with your purchase, not to mention the hardcover book and huge collection of photographs. This is a fantastic celebration for a real champion of film music, and I'm glad, too, to see many people talk of respect for this set. It's deserving of it. For anyone who really has an interest and are living on harder times, I really do hope you find a way to enjoy this release. May the positive support for Varese's effort be continued.

I think this is a welcome release for golden age and Herrmann fans! Having listened to the samples, this is not my cup of tea. Part of me is relieved (that would be my wallet), part of me is sad it isn't a Rocky boxset (that would be my legs). Great release!

If Varese wants to gather up a few items for a Universal set, they'll have my money there, too!

I actually had a conversation with Nick Redman at one point about the songs, and, as I recall, he said they had been lost. Too bad, because they're wonderful, and very atomospheric. The singer sounds like an Edith Piaf wannabe. Or, maybe it was Piaf. (Though I doubt it...; she was big at the time, and would definitely have required screen credit.)

Are there any other recordings of these songs? Is there any way to find out what the specific titles are? As I recall, I don't think they're even mentioned in the credits.

Totally fair. But the thing is, technological advancements have allowed for these scores to be restored in ways they weren't when the CDs first came out (some of which are more than eighteen years old!). Even some more recent ones (and it's been ten years since "Beneath the 12 Mile Reef," which is hard to believe) can benefit significantly. I'm guessing that new anti-wow software has helped out, and that's brand new. Varese isn't saying whether new masters have been found on any of these, or whether new technology is to be credited (it's probably some of both).

The point is, frustrating though this is, it would be even more frustrating to me if these advancements (or finds) were ignored, and the music were trapped forever in lesser (or shorter) quality simply on the technicality that they've already been released in some form.

I'm sure this isn't the last we'll see of these scores (though it may well be the final word from Varese on them). That's not a bad thing, to my mind.

Sorry to see that the product info fails to mention that I did a complete ground-up new restoration, mix & assembly on The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Mike

I'm certainly happy to hear that you did MIke! What a great selling point. Can't wait to hear it.

I am familiar with a lot of his work, but don't own any Herrmann scores, and have often been close to buying a bunch of titles. This release now is very very tempting...
Went on Youtube and listened to some. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is beautiful!

This is an excellent release from Varese - so much that will now be available to hear that was previously unavailable. And it is certainly a grand celebration of Herrmann's work.

I do wish Varese had chosen not to release this as one great big box. It would have been nice to have individual releases one after the other over the course of the year. Yes, probably more expensive doing it that way, but it seems more affordable.

I'll just have to wait for them to appear as individual titles at some point in the future.
