Why didn't they use the final poster??? That's a truly ugly cover...

The poster art matches the horrible looking film. HOWEVER, they did release an IMAX poster which is gorgeous. So..... I quickly made a custom cover using that poster.

BTW, the score is sensational!

So...the concept of 'guilty pleasure' is foreign to everyone here mewling about the movie? Good to know.

If you like some kind of art form, why should it be a guilty pleasure to you?

A lot of reviews paint this movie as pretty joyless and shabbily made, and with almost an entire cast of Australians (bizarre). A guilty pleasure has to have some - uh pleasure to it.

There are some like Star Trek V that are guilty and pleasures, because while it had a lot of problems, it does have real pleasures to it.

Of the top-billed leads, Scotland, Denmark, France, England, and USA are all represented along with Australia. Australia may be over-represented but it's certainly not as big a deal as, say, Egypt being under-represented!

Oh yeah, true mast.
But yeah, too many Australians

Yes, how dare a movie shot in Australia and directed by an Australian have loads of Australians in the cast.

In that case, THE SPIRIT (yes, that THE SPIRIT) is one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen.

If this is anywhere near that ballpark...fun times.

It is pretty irrelevant to the casting that the director is Australian and it was shot there, unless the movie is Mad Max or Crocodile Dundee or something set in Australia. But since this movie is set in Egypt a cast full of Australians makes little sense. They can fly actors in from other countries even when they make movies in Australia. I am pretty sure that they have an airport there.

It's a fantasy film. Don't get so worked up over it. What English speaking actors of Egyptian dissent would you have cast in the leading roles?

Just gave it a listen on Spotify. Turned it off halfway through, cause it bored me. This is nowhere as exciting as Silvestri's The Mummy Returns.

Will give it another try though

Really? I'm not a huge Mummy score fan but this is surprisingly awesome and I am NOT a fan of Beltrami for the most part. I'm not sure if I would say it is his masterpiece but it is really solid from what I've heard so far.

And would it make sense if they were Americans or English?

This release was not on my radar, probably because I have never been a fan of Beltrami (just not into the horror genre) and the movie looked particularly rotten. But this is a really delightful surprise, a big, thematic, melodic score that I can really sink my teeth into... a really fun listen. I'll be paying more attention to Beltrami in the future.

If you like big, thematic, melodic: get Hellboy. You won't regret it.

Saw this movie last Saturday. Enjoyed it very much.

Went with a friend who said beforehand that he didn't expect much of it, but who also liked it a lot. Very entertaining, unpretentious, popcorn movie.

Likewise the score, which I certainly intend to get.

We had previously seen HAIL CAESAR!, which did not impress us, seeming more like a Mel Brooks wannabe. Some of the MGM hommages were clever, but only that, with the much-lauded "No Dames" musical number literally stopping dead, rather than coming to an end. And with plot all over the place, as well as whole subplots that could easily be eliminated, without affecting the overall story.

Then we went to DEADPOOL, which we both thought was a smarmy mess. Nothing but a lot of violence, peppered with lots of profanity. The whole thing reminded me of a 14-year-old on steroids.
(Great. Now all the superhero movies are going to swear, and brag about their "nine-inch dick!" Such fun...)

But GODS OF EGYPT was enjoyable and fun to watch. Recommended.

(On the other hand, for all you supportive co-posters out there, I also loved JOHN CARTER; so I fully expect to be lambasted here over and over again...)

This is really a pretty impressive work. Aside from SEVENTH SON, which is orchestrationally engaging but not hugely memorable, I really thought Beltrami had forgotten how to write real symphonic music. His last great score was the gorgeously dark DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, which felt like a fluke somehow. This is a huge step forward for him.

My jaw almost dropped when I heard a contrabassoon (!!!) in a few cues. How much do you want to bet some music supervisor warned him against using "Silly Scooby-Doo Sneaking Around Music" at some point in the process for fear the execs would toss the cue and have someone re-write it?

I'd like to see him push for even MORE memorable themes next time around though. They're well-done and earnest but could have been even more spectacular for sure.

I'm still waiting for him to write a theme as gorgeous as the "Reunited" one from MIMIC. That's still his best work, period.

How funny that some of my favorite scores from "Hollywood Movies" in the past few years have all accompanied flops: JOHN CARTER, CRIMSON PEAK, CLOUD ATLAS, Debney's DREAM HOUSE... It's like any film with a good score is destined to fail now. Eek!

I agree Bobbengan. The themes could be better and there could be more of them but it is still a great step in the right direction for Beltrami who i had mostly written off as well.
