I have to say, Ferde Grofe is one of my favorite American composers. Besides his film scores, I've always enjoyed his concert works, which, honestly, sound like film music anyway. I encourage everyone out there to explore his wonderful pieces like THE GRAND CANYON SUITE, THE MISSISSIPPI SUITE, THE HUDSON RIVER SUITE, THE AVIATION SUITE, METROPOLIS (no, not a score for the film, but a musical depiction of New York), or the VALLEY OF THE SUN SUITE. Admittedly, his music is not really complex. Classical critics may find his music a little too simplistic. But, as a guy who moved himself up from arranging music for dance bands, and took the step up to composing, I find him almost the equal of George Gershwin, who went from writing songs and popular shows to trying to extend himself by writing more serious works for the concert hall. Happy birthday, Ferde Grofe!
