WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16 JAMES BOND---Daniel Craig confirmed he's returning for the 25th James Bond movie. GREMLINS 3---Chris Columbus said he has finished the sequel script, "I’m really proud of the script, It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.” He was also asked if it's possible to “eliminate” Gizmo, the source of the Mogwai infestations, “Very good observation. That comes up in the movie, certainly … I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you. Too many people are dying." The status of the sequel's development is not known. JUSTICE LEAGUE---Ben Affleck commented on Batman in the sequel, “’BvS’ [BATMAN v SUPERMAN] departed a little bit from the traditional Batman. He started out with all this rage directed at Superman, because of his coworkers who had died in the fight Superman had with Zod. He was holding on to a lot of anger, in a little bit of an irrational way, whereas this is a much more traditional Batman. He’s heroic. He does things in his own way, but he wants to save people, help people. This is more in keeping with the canon of how Batman’s usually been portrayed, and how he’s portrayed vis a vis the Justice League in the comics. This is more the Batman you would find if you opened up your average Batman comic book. Not that it’s average.” THE BEAST IS AN ANIMAL---Amazon Studios/Ridley Scott movie underway based on the fantasy novel about a teenage girl who faces twin sisters who are soul eaters. GAME OF THRONES---the latest episode set a new record with 10.7 million viewers. STAR TREK: DISCOVERY---Season 1 will be about a war between the Federation and the Klingons. Executive producer Alex Kurtzman commented on Season 2's storyline, “Each season needs to be about a different thing. I wouldn’t necessarily want to bring the Klingon War into season two. However, the results of the war are going to allow for a lot of new storytelling that will be the result of everything that happens and the people that are left behind; the casualties, the things that have grown in Starfleet as a result of the war. That’s what we’ll inherit in the second season.” STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE---producer Brannon Braga said he regrets the series finale which focused on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, “I thought it was the coolest thing ever when we were writing it, the idea of doing a ‘lost episode’ of THE NEXT GENERATION, but they’re going to the holodeck to look back at Enterprise, Rick and I thought was a great sendoff to STAR TREK [the franchise as it existed in 2005], and it didn’t work out so well…It was a kind of a slap in the face to the Enterprise actors. I heard it from everybody, it was the only time Scott Bakula was ever mean to me. I regret it.” Braga said if ENTERPRISE had been renewed, Season 5 would have focused on Vulcan changes and the Romulan War. CASTLE ROCK---Scott Glenn (THE RIGHT STUFF) will co-star as retired sheriff Alan Pangborn in the Hulu series based on Stephen King's works. BENEATH A SCARLET SKY---Tom Holland (SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING) stars in this movie based on the novel about Pino Lella, an Italian teenager who joined the Italian underground. He later became a driver for General Hans Leyer, one of Adolf Hitler's top generals, and then became a spy for the Allies. THE TRUTH ABOUT THE HARRY QUEBERT AFFAIR---Patrick Dempsey stars in this EPIX miniseries underway based on the novel about a famous novelist who is accused of murder when the body of a girl is found on his property. LICENSE TO DRIVE---20th Century Fox remake underway of the 1988 movie that starred Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALL---Cate Blanchett is in talks to star with Jack Black in the movie based on the gothic horror novel. Eli Roth is the director. HELLBOY---Sasha Lane will play Hellboy's love interest in the reboot movie. THE SIMPSONS---director William Friedkin (THE EXORCIST) will guest star on the annual "Treehouse of Horror" episode. ARROW---Kirk Acevedo (BAND OF BROTHERS) will play villain Richard Dragon in Season 6. OZARK---Netflix renewed the series for Season 2.

STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE---producer Brannon Braga said he regrets the series finale which focused on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, “I thought it was the coolest thing ever when we were writing it, the idea of doing a ‘lost episode’ of THE NEXT GENERATION, but they’re going to the holodeck to look back at Enterprise, Rick and I thought was a great sendoff to STAR TREK [the franchise as it existed in 2005], and it didn’t work out so well…It was a kind of a slap in the face to the Enterprise actors. I heard it from everybody, it was the only time Scott Bakula was ever mean to me. I regret it.” No, sorry, that is only HALF the apology. It was a slap in the face to "Star Trek: The Next Generation" fans who had a good episode ruined by tying it in to "Enterprise". Apologize for that, and I'll be mostly happy. Mostly, 'cause Rick has to apologize for it (along with another things...). Then we can move on to apologies for other Trek stuff, including he TNG episode "Code of Honor" and Nemesis. I can't imagine seeing a Gremlins film without a Goldsmith score. "Rambo" got Tyler. "Total Recall" got Harry Grenson-Williams. "Papillion" got David Buckley. I suspect this will get Lorne Balfe (fuck, maybe even Giacchino; still, better than Balfe). A low point.

Its flawed because, yeah, you don't want to see TNG characters on your ENT finale. You want to say good by to THESE characters. But at the same time, the framing device is straight out of Shelly's Frankenstein so I can't be too made at the attempt. (I *do* wonder how Bakula was mean to Braga though...)

Voyager had a lousy final, too. Voyager had a lousy series.

There were some well made episodes of Voyager, Year of Hell was pretty solid, well scored too. When Voyager was good, it was pretty terrific, and when it was bad, as in Kes, it was not pretty. Enterprise was bad the first year, better second and then gradually found itself pretty well by the last two years. The last episode was indeed, a huge miscalculation, Riker as the chef - making bread! It was pretty bad. I gotta agree with Rory, DS9 has the least re-watchable factor of any Trek show. I will grant that they were doing hard working trying to get off the mainstream of Trek conventions, but there was something stage-play hokey about a lot of it. And there was some really bad overacting in the roles of Sisko and Kira. And the repetitive story-lines with the changelings seemed to never die, and they were more often not preachy and stuffy boredom.

Having recently binged the entirety of both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager side-by-side, so to speak (alternating between the two so as to recreate a semblance of the original overlapping runs), I have to say Deep Space Nine was nearly always the better of the two, and possibly the most consistently good of any of the Trek shows, but Voyager is unjustly maligned. It's very uneven, to be sure, and the ending is too rushed, but it really had some great qualities. The Doctor in particular is very entertaining, and Seven of Nine proves an excellent foil for Janeway. I love both, and am glad to have both.
