Some more demolition images showing how the pace is picking up.

It's being taken down piece by piece, as the usage of specially placed explosive charges to bring it all down at one time as other stadiums have been in the past is not permitted in NY.

There is still a lot of work to do in clearing all the debris, which is a daily ongoing process.
I don't even know how many trucks in, how many trucks out per day there are hauling away all that concrete and steel.

It's a big job.

On the positive side, the Mets new home Citi Field looks beautiful, and spring cannot come fast enough for me.

The men and women who worked hard to build the Mets new ballpark did a great job.

Congratulations to both Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice.

They are the class of 2009 Baseball Hall of Fame inductees.

Henderson getting voted in on the first ballot is a no brainer, he was the most prolific leadoff hitter and stolen base leader in MLB history.

Rice was in his last year of eligibility on the writers ballot, and he deserved to finally get in this year after coming close in the voting last year.

YIPPEE HOORRAY for them!!!!!!!!! Good Job

On a personal note: I am so excited that I'll get to see the Braves vs. the METS on St. Patrick's Day in Disney! We scored tix through my sis and brother-in-law last Saturday.

I figured Rice would make it. I'm only sorry that another name in his last year on the ballot, Tommy John remained stuck in the 30% bracket. Momentum has built up for Bert Blyleven over the last few years but TJ IMO is a more worthy candidate.

MLB Network scored points in its first ever live breaking news story on baseball by covering the announcement.

Indeed.

I give MLB network credit for being there for the announcement of the news at 2 pm est today.

And they will probably be there in Cooperstown to cover the actual induction ceremonies live as well.

ESPN has long since dropped the ball on covering baseball news when it happens in the off season, and to have the new MLB Network filling this void has been much appreciated.

ESPN used to cover the events at Cooperstown and Canton live during the Hall of Fame ceremonies. For both baseball and football.

Not any more.

You tune in now to ESPN on induction day, and more than likely you are going to see bowling or some bad poker show (on both their channels) before you'll see coverage of the baseball Hall of Fame inductions live from Cooperstown.

I learned this HOF news first from the new MLB Network today.
They broke away from a rerun of an old playoff game between Toronto and Oakland for special coverage and it was much welcomed.

Bert Blyleven is one of those pitchers who keeps getting caught in that, "Is it longevity, or quality" category.

When I was a kid and watched the guy pitch I never looked at him as a Steve Carlton or Tom Seaver.. in other words, a "dominant" pitcher in his era.

Others may see it differently, this is just my opinion.

I don't think Don Sutton is a Hall of Famer, but he made it in.

And the same thing could be said about Gaylord Perry, who obviously doctored the baseball during his long career and made it to the Hall after sticking around (pun intended) all those years with different teams to tack on the career wins even when he was old and way out of shape.

Baseball fans can debate these things over and over endlessly, and it's fun, but the bottom line is we don't have the vote here.

The thing about the "longevity" argument Anz is that I think when you get down to it, if the case against Tommy John or Blyeleven is based on the "longevity" factor, then inevitably the worthiness of Nolan Ryan in the HOF has to come up. Ryan it can be argued was the ultimate "longevity" pitcher in the sense of career wins and the only real difference in terms of being a quality pitcher versus Tommy John is that Ryan had gargantuan strikeout numbers and no-hitters, but John was a sinkerball pitcher with few strikeouts. Nonetheless, John (unlike Blyleven) had a stretch of being a really dominant pitcher with back to back 20 win seasons with the Yankees in 79-80 and of course some great years with the Dodgers and White Sox before that and had he reached the 300 win plateau he surely would be in now.

Plus, I think TJ should get in for having performed so well *after* his arm surgery which paved the way for prolonging the careers of so many pitchers who in an earlier age would have been finished but for the risk he took to try and come back and show how it could be done.

A couple of nice pictures of the new Yankee Stadium from the inside has heightened my excitement for the coming season!

I always said the thing that would take the most getting used to would be not seeing the Courthouse looming over the ballpark, but I can see how the apartment complex in the distance in a way kind of replicates that look to a degree.

The old-fashioned auxilary scoreboard of the original Stadium is back!

I don't blame you for being excited.

This time, they got it right.

It looks almost exactly like the old Yankee Stadium before they butched it in the mid 70's with the redo which really took away all the feel and aura of the old Yankee Stadium.

And just to see the old facade back on the entire rim of the top of the stadium the way it was for years pre '74 is worthy of celebration in itself!

They did a great job, and it's great seeing the aux scoreboard in classic style back on field level.

Even seeing the snow on the field in the photos, it reminds me of what the old Yankee Stadium used to look like in it's glory days.

It's sad in a way too, because I remember Bobby Murcer saying before his death that he wanted to live long enough to see the new Yankee Stadium completed.

He would recognize this place, no doubt about it.

So true that it's sad that Bobby had to leave us much too soon. I think it was in this thread about this time two years ago that we first heard the sad story of his tumor.

I'd like to thank you for posting the links to the Stadium photos recently Eric.

To me, these pictures are very important documents to help look back, while also helping to look forward to the future.

My pleasure Anz, and thanks also for your contributions to what Met fans have to look forward to. I've been doing a lot of spare reading of late on the end of the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers and finding images of the demolition of the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field, and even though both events were before my time I always feel a deep sense of sadness thinking of what New York lost when both those teams left (senselessly IMO, because the Dodgers should have taken the site that became Shea, and the Giants might then have stayed by moving into Yankee Stadium as tenants, which to my surprise, I discovered recently they were speculating about doing one day back in 1955).

But Yankee and Met fans have their great traditions that are simply going into a bright new era for both as they move into new ballparks that will creat their own great memories, and it's something both Yankee and Met fan alike has cause to be excited about.

Now THIS may actually be the most honest appraisal of Red Sox history ever to be written if the Amazon summary is correct. I will be getting this book when it comes out.

And here's another baseball history book I need to get when it comes out! A book on the end of the Giants and Dodgers in New York that doesn't put the blame on Robert Moses is one I'm all for.

Eric,

Do you have or have you seen a DVD called Yankee Stadium: Baseball's Cathedral?

I am trying to see if it's still around in circulation and if it's any good.
