But, but I always tuned in "Gilligan's Island" just to watch Tina's acting assets.

I notice that on the Gilligan's Planet cartoon, all of the original cast voice their animated counterparts, except for Tina Louise. Dawn Wells ends up doing the voices for both "Mary Ann" and "Ginger."

Tina Louise hated everything about Gilligan's Island. She thought it ruined her motion picture career and "star" power. Tina was very much a diva in real life. She refused the Gilligan's specials as well.

I guess giving a successful sitcom the sci-fi angle was as plausible a Saturday-morning-update as any.
The obvious example which springs to mind . . .

There was also the Partridge Family 2200 A.D. ..../.

Oh, good grief....

Wow, I "got out" of the Saturday morning game just in time.

Wow, I "got out" of the Saturday morning game just in time.

By the mid 70's the Saturday morning animation industry was in it's prime. Meaning originality was out the door and it was about re-branding famous properties. In this case into animation. Long gone were original shows like The Flintstones. (Though arguably that was a spoof of the Honeymooners.)

Edit: Flinstones wasn't a good example since that was a prime time show. But HB did create a lot of original stuff in the early years.

I watched Saturday cartoons then but even as a little kid I just didn't like most of what was offered (the same for then-contemporary prime time TV shows). My favorite cartoons were always Loony Tunes/Merrie Melodies stuff, The Bullwinkle Show, and those oddly minimalist Pink Panther/The Inspector cartoons.

Too bad that doesn't happen nowadays. Imagine a cartoon version of The Big Bang Theory or Friends.

Remember Muppet Babies? I came up with the idea of Battlestar Galactica Babies.

Just discovered that this also apparently existed:

Oh, and here's one for Mork and Mindy. I never knew this existed, either. The cheapness really comes through, though.

I found this while trying to see if "Laverne & Shirley" changed its name to just "Laverne" after Shirley Williams left. Did it?

And what's the deal with all these shitcom characters joining the armed forces? There was a horrid Popeye cartoon where Olive Oyl and some big, nonsensical freak named Alice the Goon signed up. God it was all so damned awful.

Well, Private Benjamin was a huge hit one year earlier.

So? An Unmarried Woman was also a hit (and also Rated R) but the Saturday kids cartoon schedule wasn't saturated with shows featuring freshly-divorced Baby Boomer women (and their annoying "cute" animal sidekicks there for clearly retarded children to "identify with").

Apologies to Disco Stu for emulating his awesomely bitter but spot-on (most of the time) posting style. wink

Funny, theres so much you forget. There were a lot more of those shows that went cartoon.
Wasnt the addams family a cartoon later?

Hey solium, did you ever read this thread of total Rambo cartoon admiration?

http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=84957&forumID=1&archive=0

Action films can easily be softened for a cartoon and run of the mill whereas a chick getting laid after her divorce would probably have me teleporting home after school to see that "Unmarried Woman" animated series! (Ruby Spears, where were you THEN?!?)

Oh, that's a great drawing, Solly! Thanks for posting it.

(The only thing missing is Jamie Bamber "accidentally" letting his diaper slip. smile )

Solium doesn't know it yet, but I've already commissioned him to do the aforementioned cartoon for An Unmarried Woman

Now get to work! wink

Thanks friend! smile Yeah I don't know about a Bamber diaper slip. I did do a baby Apollo, or maybe it was more like a super-deformed Apollo. If I can find it, I'll let you see it. wink

@ Jim Phelps - LOL!
